Chapter 1 – AC/DC
Bella’s POV
“Wow, this absolutely gorgeous,” said Rosalie as she stepped into our hotel room. Jasper and I came in behind her, lugging our suitcases and trying to push her out of the way so we could get in. I was exhausted due to the fact that we had been carrying our baggage up about 4 flights of stairs for the past twenty minutes. Apparently there was no such thing as elevators in Switzerland.
“Look at that view!” she cried, running over to the bay window and peering out. Jasper and I came up behind her and our mouths dropped out at what we saw. Jasper whistled softly and put his hand on our shoulders.
A picturesque scene of the Swiss Alps was spread charmingly out before us. The mountain peaks looked as if they touched the sky, and the blend of pastel blue and purples were absolutely breathtaking. There were white clouds surrounding the top like small ribbons, twisting and turning every which way. You could see the small village of Adelboden, where we staying, right below.
Staring out in a slight daze, I once again realized how lucky I was to get this opportunity. My best friend Rose, her twin brother Jasper and I had signed up for the Semester in Switzerland program which was going to take us across Europe for the next 6 months. Of course it wasn’t all fun and games, and we were going to get a grade for this, but it was hard to care about that during moments like these.
The Semester in Switzerland program only gave out 3 scholarships to 15 colleges across the United States. So for the past 2 months we had worked our butts off, making sure that we got that money. Only 45 people in the entire country were on this trip, and I was not going to take for granted that we were 3 of them.
“That is incredible,” I agreed. “I can’t believe were actually going to get to go up there tomorrow. What a way to start this semester huh?”
“Sure is,” said Jasper, turning around and going to get his bag by the door. Luckily Jasper was allowed to share a room with us. It was stated that you had to bunk with your University, and besides that, no one had really seemed to care about the co-ed thing over here.
I followed him, and flung my suitcase onto the left bed. Jasper put his on the right and Rose dropped hers next to mine. We started pulling out our things and stuffing them into the small dressers by the window.
“I shouldn’t even bother unpacking,” mumbled Rose. “It’s not as if I can fit all my clothes in this thing.” She gave it a small kick and pouted.
I chuckled as I bent down and opened the bottom drawer. “It’s not like were staying here for long,” I told her. “Next week we will be on our way to London, and you’ll just have to repack again.”
“What should we do now?” Jasper asked once we were done. He sat back on the bed and put his hands behind his head. “Should we try and find the other students?”
“Probably,” I said, standing up. “We should definitely try and make the effort if were going to be spending the next half year with them.”
Rose scowled and crossed her arms. “You guys can go; I think I’m going to stick around here. They’re probably all travel geeks or academic slave drivers.”
Jasper snorted and grabbed his sister’s elbow. “Oh get up,” he said. “That isn’t true. You’re on this trip, and I know for a fact that you are not a travel geek, and you’re definitely not an academic slave driver,” he teased, putting his arm around her shoulders.
“Hey! I get good grades!” she said in mock offense. “Better than you and Bella if you want to get technical!”
We all laughed as we left our room, making sure that we locked the door. The three of us stood in the hallway, trying to figure out which way to go. We were the second to last door so we decided to go right since there was only one other door to our left.
“I’m not knocking,” stated Rosalie, positioning herself behind me. Jasper and I gave each other an amused look.
“Fine,” I laughed. I walked up and gave the thick oaken door three loud knocks, then stood back in between my two friends to wait. After a moment, the door flung open revealing a boy with light blonde hair and blue eyes. Once he saw us his face broke out into a wide grin.
“Hey,” I said, giving him a small wave. “I’m Bella, and these are my best friends Jasper and Rose. We just wanted to come by and say hello, you know, get to know everyone on the trip and stuff.”
“Hey,” he said, and I briefly saw his eyes flicker down to my chest. He then looked over to Rose and gave her a small once over. “I’m Mike. That’s Tyler,” he motioned behind him, “And Eric. We’re from California.”
“Cool,” I said, a little annoyed that he had so blatantly checked me out. “We’re from Forks, Washington.”
He smiled at me and stuffed his hands in his pockets. “You guys want to come in and hang for a bit? We’re gonna go find some pubs later, and you’re welcome to join us. Oh, you can come too if you want Jester.” He said, giving Jasper a half smile.
“It’s Jasper,” he said through gritted teeth. “And no thanks, we just wanted to come by and say what’s up. We’ll see you guys out later though probably.”
“Until later then.” Mike said shrugging. He winked at me and then slowly shut the door.
I shivered in slight repulsion.
“What an ass,” Jasper muttered, grabbing onto one of our hands in each of his. “You guys are sticking with me when we go out tonight.”
“Please, he is harmless,” said Rosalie. “He is all talk, trust me I know these things.”
Jasper dragged us over to the next door mumbling under his breath, and we knocked again, hoping for better results.
A small girl with short blond hair and black rimmed glasses answered, and she didn’t look happy. “May I help you?” she said formally.
“Uh, hey.” I said. “We just wanted to say hello…meet everyone on the trip…” For some reason she was making me nervous and I blushed at my stammering.
“Hi,” she said curtly. “Unfortunately I don’t have time to chat. I’m cataloguing the weather statistics for the east side of mountains so I know exactly what temperatures I’ll be facing tomorrow.”
I peered inside her room and saw two other girls pouring over a large red book, pencils working furiously.
“Oh ok,” I said instantly. “No problem, sorry to bother you. We’ll let you get back to your um…weather cataloguing.”
She nodded her head, gave us a brief smile and then slammed the door.
“Academic slave drivers,” sang Rosalie under her breath as we made our way to the next door.
Half an hour later, we returned to our room and flung ourselves down onto the beds. No one wanted to break the silence, but I finally couldn’t take it anymore and said what no one else had the guts to.
“Fine Rosalie! You were right,” I confessed, turning my head to look at her. “We’re surrounded by travel geeks and academic slave drivers.”
“Don’t forget perverted frat boys,” she said smugly, thinking of the first room we went to.
I sighed and shut my eyes, feeling a little disappointed that we wouldn’t really be able to relate to anyone else around us. I mean, there were a couple of rooms that we skipped so we didn’t meet everyone. But at that point, we were tired of meeting so many unresponsive people, or in Mike’s case, too responsive.
But after a few moments, my eyes snapped open, and I felt a rush of adrenaline spiral through my system. I hopped on top of the bed and stood with my hands on my hips.
“You know what, who cares!” I shouted. “I am in frickin’ Europe with my two best friends in the entire world, and I’m going to have a good time, regardless of who is on this trip with us!”
They both looked up at me with blank faces, but finally Jasper broke into a smile of his own. “You know what, you’re right Bella. Besides we’ll meet new people each place we go, so it really isn’t even a big deal.”
I nodded and we both turned to look at Rose, who rolled her eyes dramatically at our optimistic statements.
Jasper began to get up and slowly go towards her, grinning madly. I took his lead and kneeled down, reaching for her with curled fingers. Before she could get away, we pounced, tickling her, which is something that she absolutely hated.
“Stop!” she screamed in between her breathless gasps for air. “Please! Fine! Fine! You’re right! You’re right!” We let her go and tumbled back on the bed, laughing loudly.
“You guys suck,” she chuckled. “But I guess you’re right though. There will be tons of hot guys in Paris anyways.”
Jasper and I shared an amused glance.
“Pubs tonight?” I suggested, after we had all caught our breath. “Avoiding the perverts of course.” They both agreed, and we lay there for another minute before Jasper spoke up.
“I’ve got an idea, let’s annoy our neighbors,” he said, getting up and running over to his suitcase. He pulled out his I-pod and two small speakers.
“What are you doing?” I asked. Rose sat up beside me and stared at her brother quizzically.
“Making our own fun,” he answered. We watched with amusement as he pulled his socks halfway up his calves, threw on a pair of black sunglasses and bent down to plug in his I-pod.
Rose and I smiled at each other having just figured out what he was up to. I hopped off the bed, went to my bag and pulled out a hair elastic, throwing my long brown locks into the highest side pony tail possible. I grabbed my own sunglasses, and quickly slipped on a pair of white leggings. I tied up my shirt in a knot at the waist, and watched Rose do the same with her yellow shirt that made her long blond hair stand out. She ran her fingers through it roughly and shook her head, making it more wild.
“Ready?” asked Jasper, with a ridiculously obnoxious grin. I saw him slowly turn the volume knob to maximum as Rose walked over to the door and pulled it wide open.
Jasper raised his eyebrows lightheartedly, hit the play button, and the music began absolutely blaring out the speakers. It was “AC/DC – You Shook Me All Night Long,” our favorite song to dance to.
Jasper immediately spread his legs and bent his knees, pretending to play an air guitar. Rose and I swayed our hips seductively on beat, jumping from bed to bed and laughing loudly when we ran into each other. I knew we had to be driving everyone on this floor insane, but they needed to have fun and loosen up a bit anyway.
Jasper began to mimic the words and Rose and I began to act out what he was saying. He shouted out the lyrics, ‘Knockin’ me out with those American thighs!’ and Rose and I did our signature hip roll and slapped each other’s bottom. I was just about to turn around…but I looked up and froze instantly on the spot.
I guess we were having so much fun, that we didn’t notice there were three people watching us in the doorway.
Edward’s POV
“Christ! Alice what do you have in here, bricks?!” said Emmett as he lugged her baggage up the staircase.
She turned around, took a quick glance at which suitcase he was holding. “Shoes.” She said immediately, and continued skipping up ahead of us. She had one small bag on her shoulder, leaving Emmett and I, “her thoughtful brothers” to carry the rest of it.
“How many pairs did you bring?” I asked, gripping onto my own bag and trying to keep hers balanced on my shoulder at the same time.
“Just the essentials,” she said, turning around and giving us a big smile that caused Emmett and I to laugh and shake our heads. Our baby sister usually got her way in everything, and Emmett and I were usually happy to oblige her. But I had to admit; carrying all this weight up four flights of stairs was not how I wanted to start this semester. Haven’t they ever heard of elevators?
We finally reached the fourth floor, and followed Alice down to our room. It ended up being the last possible one all the way at the end of the hall. We opened the door and dropped all the bags loudly on the floor.
Alice gasped suddenly, causing us to start in fright.
“What? What?” we said in unison. I looked up at her and my eyes caught the view of the mountains. It was incredible, and I stared open-mouthed and nudged Emmett so he could see it too. We walked over the window, admiring it for a moment, before we heard Alice gasp again.
“Where am I going to put all my clothes?!” she shrieked, staring down at the small dresser in horror. Apparently she hadn’t gasped at the view earlier, but at the size of the bureau.
“Aliceee,” I groaned, picking her up to stand beside us. “Look at this view, do your clothes really matter right now?” I asked.
“I guess not,” she sighed, linking her arms with ours. Emmett ruffled her hair and we stood in silence for a moment.
“So…since clothes don’t matter, does that mean I can have your drawer space?” she said hopefully, turning and giving me a wide eyed pout.
“Yes,” I sighed in amusement. “You can have my drawer space Alice.”
She clapped her hands happily and ran back over to her suitcase to begin pulling things out. Emmett and I sat down on the bed and watched.
“There are no hott girls on this trip,” mumbled Emmett. “I can already tell.”
“How can you say that? You haven’t even seen everyone,” said Alice, smoothing out a black skirt on her knees.
“I’ve seen enough,” muttered Emmett in my ear.
When we arrived today and checked in, Emmett had his eye on the door the entire time. We saw about 10 of the groups already because Alice insisted on scouring the gift shop, so we watched them all come in as we waited for her. I admit we hadn’t seen everyone, but what we had seen was definitely not up to Emmett’s standards. He had been grumbling ever since, and I had been trying to cheer him up. It didn’t really bother me much, I usually tried to stay away from the relationship front. I spent so much time devoted to my music; I rarely found the time to date. And sometimes I felt as if no one but my siblings really understood me. I shook off my thoughts and walked back over to the window to look at the mountains.
“Are we really climbing those tomorrow?” asked Emmett from the bed.
“Yup!” said Alice. She opened her mouth to say something else, but was cut off by the abrupt start of AC/DC that sounded as if it was coming through the walls. We all jumped in shock and looked at each other in surprise.
We ran simultaneously to the wall and put our ear up against it. Sure enough, the music was coming from right next door to our room.
Alice was nothing if not curious, so she immediately began heading for our door. She motioned for us to follow, knowing that we wouldn’t be able to hear her if she tried to speak. The music was that loud.
A tiny bit curious myself, I walked to the door with Emmett in toe. We didn’t have to walk far since it was coming from the next room, and when I stepped into the hallway I saw Alice already beaming into the room that was playing the music.
Emmett and I gave each other a confused look and took the few steps to stand behind her. My eyes widened when I took in the scene.
The first thing I saw was a tall blond kid playing the air guitar, lip synching the words and moving his head back and forth. I turned my attention to the other people in the room: a tall girl with blond hair, and a shorter girl with brown hair dancing and swinging their hair around. And then - to my complete surprise - they suddenly slapped each other’s butts.
Emmett drew in a sharp breath the same time I did, and he turned to me with his mouth wide open. I looked back at the two girls and saw that we had finally been noticed, and the brown haired girl was staring right at me.
I blinked once…twice…and raised my eyebrows at her. She ripped off her sunglasses in embarrassment, and I felt my stomach flop, a little surprised at how attractive I found her.
“Please let them be on this trip,’ prayed Emmett under his breath.
I watched as she grabbed the blond girl’s arm roughly, hissing something into her ear. The blond girl obviously didn’t hear her over the music, so the brown haired girl pointed to the door in exasperation.
Once the blond girl saw us, she shrieked and hopped off the bed, running over to the music and shutting it off. Complete silence abruptly filled the room.
“Hey!” said the blond boy playing the air guitar, standing up to his full height and looking down at the girl. As the two of them stood together, I realized that they must be brother and sister, because they looked almost exactly alike. “Why did you shut it off?”
Instead of answering him, she turned towards the door and smiled at us. I heard Emmett let out a big breath of air and turned to see him smile back.
Alice began clapping her hands as she skipped into the room.
“Alice!” I hissed, but she didn’t hear me. Of course she wouldn’t care about things like walking into people’s room without permission. Even Emmett remained at the doorway. But I had a feeling it was due more to his shock than his manners.
“That was great you guys!” Alice chirped happily, looking at all three of them. “I’m Alice Cullen, we’re in the room next door.”
My eyes were suddenly drawn to the brown haired girl again as she hopped to the floor. “It’s nice to meet you, I’m Bella. And sorry about the music, I guess we were just trying to liven this place up a bit…” she confessed, and bit her lip.
“Don’t be sorry!” said Alice loudly. “That was really funny! Especially the air guitar…” she turned and smiled at the blond boy, who had wide eyes and was standing very still.
“I’m Rosalie,” said the blond girl stepping up. “And this is my brother Jasper. Are you guys with the Semester in Switzerland program too?”
“Yeah! Oh!” said Alice, then turned around, suddenly remembering that she had family members. “Come on in you two, don’t be shy!” She motioned to us happily.
Emmett and I walked in slowly until we were right beside Alice. Emmett stuck out his hand to Rosalie first thing. “I’m Emmett,” he said in a deep voice. “It’s nice to meet you Rosalie.”
She grinned and flipped her hair lightly as she stuck out her hand. “You too,” she responded, and I noticed that she pursed her lips out a little bit. She then turned to me, and I shook her hand, introducing myself.
“Hello Edward,” said Bella, and my gaze met hers. I ran my eyes over her face and felt myself smile. I shook her hand, but realized that I hadn’t said anything back.
“Hello Bella.” I finally got out.
“Have you guys met anyone else yet?” asked Alice, sitting down on the bed.
“Unfortunately we have,” answered Rosalie. “We knocked on doors and tried to introduce ourselves to everyone, but most people gave us the cold shoulder. So we were kind of bummed, and that led to our um…little music fest here.”
“It seems you missed a couple of doors,” said Emmett in his deep voice, smiling at Rosalie.
She laughed and looked back at him, nodding her head once then looking down.
A sudden knock on the door caused us all to turn around. I heard Jasper scowl as three boys appeared in the doorway.
“What’s up Mike?” he said, in a voice that was obviously trying to control his annoyance.
“Hey Jester,” said Mike. “I was just coming by to see if the girls wanted to come out with us. There are a few good clubs down the street that we found.”
“Sorry,” piped up Rosalie as she simultaneously crossed her arms. “But we’re not heading out till around nine, we still have to get ready and stuff.”
Mike nodded, seemingly unaware of the discomfort he had brought into the room. “Well we’ll meet you guys there later then, see ya later…Rosalie, Bella.” He smirked and left the room.
“Who was that?” asked Alice, as we all turned our attention back to each other.
“Unfortunately that’s our other neighbor,” said Jasper. “That Mike kid is bad news,” he continued, his eyes meeting mine for a moment, then Emmett’s, giving us a look only a guy could understand. “You guys better stay away from him,” he warned, looking at Bella and Rosalie.
“Hm, that’s weird, I could have sworn you were my brother, not my DAD,” said Rosalie, but with a smirk on her face.
Jasper rolled his eyes at her and bent to push his socks down. Bella laughed and whispered something to Rosalie, who stuck her foot out and kicked Jasper in the side of his stomach.
“Ah! God Rosalie!” he cried, glaring at her and rubbing his stomach. She snickered and bit her thumb to quell her laughing as she rested her head on Bella’s shoulder.
“Sisters,” he muttered, and Emmett and I burst out laughing, knowing exactly what he was talking about just by saying that one word. Alice turned to us beaming, and I knew exactly what was running through her mind.
“So you guys are going out tonight?” Alice asked, a big grin on her face.
“Yeah, in about an hour or so, you guys want to come out with us?” Bella questioned, and I felt my stomach flop again as she looked to me first.
Alice jumped in excitement. “Definitely! Do you guys know what you’re wearing yet?!” she automatically fired off, and I saw Rosalie answer just as swiftly and pull Alice over to her suitcase.
Bella smiled at them and turned to me. She rolled her eyes slightly and I let out a breathless laugh.
“We’re going to go get ready!” said Alice suddenly, and she grabbed onto me and Emmett and dragged us out of the room. “We’ll meet you back here in an hour!”
We shut the door behind us, and no one spoke until we got back to the room.
Alice started humming and digging through her suitcase. She pulled out a towel and swung it over her shoulder. She stood up and put her hands on her hips. “I’m taking a shower first because I take the longest. But pick out your outfits while I’m gone. I don’t want to be late.” She sang and pranced into the bathroom.
“She is so hott,” said Emmett, sitting down on the bed and disregarding Alice’s comments about finding an outfit.
“She is, isn’t she?” I agreed without thinking. Emmett narrowed his eyes at me.
“I saw her first,” he said loudly. “I call this one Edward, too bad bro.”
“How did you see her first?” I asked, not really knowing why I was arguing. “We walked into the room at the same time!”
“Well…because…” he sputtered. “You don’t even like blondes!” he shot back.
I cocked my head to the side in confusion. “Blondes??” I said stiffly. And then I realized he thought I was talking about Rosalie. “OH! Emmett, I was talking about Bella.”
He breathed a sigh of relief. “Good,” he said, and then his smile brightened. “Cool, that works out perfectly then.” He slapped me on my shoulder and strolled over to the dresser.
That works out perfectly. I mulled those words over in my head. Just because I thought she was beautiful, did not mean I wanted anything to happen between us. Emmett really didn’t know what he was talking about, and assumed that just because he wanted to jump down Rosalie’s throat that I would want to do the same with Bella. He didn’t know how wrong he was.
Bella will probably turn out to be a nice friend, I thought to myself as I finally got up to change. A nice beautiful friend.
A/N: So I thought I would give them a chapter or two of fun before I send them out to fend for themselves in the wilderness ;) haha. So what do you guys think?
