Chapter Eleven

"Thank you, Bartimaeus," Natalie said, a small smile on her face. Her eyes were full of tears. She hugged him, suddenly.

"Can't breathe."

"Sorry." Natalie stepped away, letting go fo Bartimaeus. He sank to the floor, clutching his throat. "Bartimaeus, you okay?"

"Get it off…"

"Get what off?" Kitty asked. She knelt by Bartimaeus. "What's wrong?"

"Something on my throat…"

"I see it." Gary's voice was low. He reached towards the area around Bartimaeus throat. He tugged on something unseen. "Got it…"

"How did you do that?" Bartimaeus asked. He was breathing easier now.

"No idea." Gary looked down at the thing he was holding. "What is it?"

"Honestly don't know." There was a loud noise and a flash of smoke.

"Gary!" Natalie screamed. "Let him go…" A young man who had appeared from nowhere suddenly had Gary by the throat.

"What do you want with me?" the boy hissed, still holding Gary's throat.

"Who are you?" Natalie asked.

"Jacksper." The boy pushed his dark blonde hair from his face. He looked ordinary; dark blonde hair, tan skin, blue eyes.

"Do you think you could let go of Gary?"

"That's his name?" Jacksper let go of Gary's neck.

"What was that about?" Gary asked, cooly.

"You grabbed me, self defense." Natalie smiled a bit. Jacksper turned to look at her. "You were that Natalie girl…"

"How do you know me?"

"I knew Jeremy. And Tiffany. Well. Know. They are both alive, last I checked."

"You know both of them?"

"Of course. They've been seeing each other for quite some time." Natalie looked up. "You didn't know."

"For how long?" Natalie's voice was soft.

"Almost three months."

"Interesting." Natalie gave a small smile. "Thank you Jacksper. Now I have a reason as to why I punched Jeremy."

"Natalie…" Gary said softly.

"It's fine." Natalie's smile was too big to be real and there were tears in her eyes. "I should have expected that from him…"

"Wait…you were the girl who was dating him?" Jacksper asked.

"Yes. That'd be me."

"Shit…I shouldn't have said that…"

"No. you shouldn't have," Gary agreed, glaring.

"God it was a mistake."

"Have you always been able to do that?" Natalie suddenly asked. "Turn invisible, I mean."

"Yeah. Since I turned like thirteen."

"You're like me and Gary then." Jacksper looked confused. "Gary can read people's minds. I can read djinn's minds. Well, one in particular."

"The one I jumped on?"

"Yes!" Natalie frowned. "How did you know that Bartimaeus was a djinn? You aren't supposed to know."

"I'm not stupid. It really isn't that hard…"

"But how?"

"The light around him." Gary nodded. "You know that aura thingie…can you two see it?"

"Of course," Gary said. Natalie nodded.

"You can see auras?" Bartimaeus asked. He had obviously recovered, although he kept rubbing his throat.

"Yeah. Since I was young," Natalie said.

"Usually only djinns can see them, although that probably explains something."

"What do you mean?" Jacksper asked.

"Usually only djinn can see auras."

"But I'm not a…" Jacksper frowned. "Am I a demon?"

"Djinn. And yes you are. Well, half of one at least. That's why you can turn invisible most likely. Did you know both your parents?"

"Not my mom. Dad said she died right after I was born."

"That explains everything. She was probably a djinn. She and your father's auras got mixed up. You were the result. Same thing happened with Natalie's mom and me, but her dad was involved to. Same with Gary, I think…"

"Gary knew both his parents," Natalie interrupted.

"I thought I did. Turns out they were just my aunt and uncle. Rebecca Piper told me."

"Then who…?" Natalie asked.

"My mom was a secretary for a guy named Makepeace. Right before the demon uprisings, he fell in love with her. That's all I know..."

"Oh my god…" That came from Kitty. "You're…you're…"

"Who am I?"

"You're Makepeace's son. Makepeace had a son."

"And Nouda's spawn to, no doubt," Bartimaeus said. "Damn, I don't envy you. But you should have greater powers."

"Like this?" A glass on a nearby table shattered.

"How did you do that?" Natalie whispered.

"It wasn't that hard," Gary said, "I've always been able to do things like that. And this…" A bit of fire burst from his fingers.

"That's…that's…" I think Natalie was in shock.

"Pretty cool, huh?" Gary smiled. It was cold and charsmic, neither of which were great things.

"Yeah. And a bit scary…Could I be this powerful?"

"Maybe…probably not. Bartimaeus said my father was pretty powerful."

"Nouda wasn't your father," Bartimaeus said, sighing, "And besides, he was insane. So was your real father, Makepeace."

"Not according to her."

"To who?"

"Her." A woman stepped into the room through the doorway.

"Jane…" Nathaniel gasped.
