Trucy had practiced for months ever since Phoenix had bought her that. “That” being the pair of magical panties she held so tightly in the palm of her hand. With a mere sway of her palm against the oh-so-soft fabric, she could reach down into that bottomless pit (or so believed) and pull out anything she desired. It had worked at the Wonder Bar…once. She could even remember when the trick first worked there: the grand applause and whistling at the end, the bright spotlight that glittered in her eyes, and especially the person who greeted her as she walked off the stage. He had that usual smile on his weary face, laughing and congratulating her on her new trick. Then, he ended it all with one comment that made her warm all over: “You really are your daddy’s daughter.”
But which daddy? That was the question that lingered in the back of her mind as they rode back home on his bike. She could feel the deep sting welling inside her chest as she remembered the cool breeze that blew through her hair on that night. It was summer, she remembered. The first summer without her real daddy.
“Poof poof poof!” she chanted as she reached into the panties again. “Poof poof poof!” she said again to her audience of stuffed animals that sat comfortably on the sofa in the always empty Wright Talent Agency. “The Magical Magician Trucy will pull out a magical fruit from her magical panties!” she cried with enthusiasm. “In goes an empty hand and out comes”- that was her cue to pull out immediately- “a dragon fruit…eh?” She looked at the fruit in her hand, and noticed it was an ordinary pomegranate. “This isn’t a dragon fruit…um, I mean, tada! The Magical Magician Trucy has done it again and pulled out a pomegranate!”
Clap, clap, clap.
Trucy turned away from her “amazed” audience to the origin of the sound. In the doorway of the Wright Talent Agency stood Phoenix with the usual smile he reserved only for her.
“Daddy!” she greeted happily.
“Wow, it seems the Magical Magician Trucy has done it again!” he laughed. “I’m really impressed. Your magic seems to get better and better each time I see it.”
“Yup! …But…” she turned away with a frown at her magical panties, “I was suppose to pull out a dragon fruit, not a pomegranate. I mean, it worked at the Wonder Bar in the summer, but now, it’s not working that well.”
Phoenix smiled softly, taking the pomegranate from her hand and examining it without much care. “You fooled me. I really don’t think it matters much what you pull out from those panties though, Trucy. Anything you pull out would gain applause. I mean, who has pomegranates in their underwear?”
Trucy bounced up and down. “I do! That’s because I’m the Magnificent Magician Trucy!” And with a tap of her top hat, she grinned.
“You sure are. You are definitely your daddy’s daughter.”
Trucy’s heart sunk with those words. Which daddy? Which daddy are you talking about, Daddy? a small voice whispered in her head. Is it you, Daddy? Or is it my real daddy, Zak Gramarye?
“Well, it looks like no one’s going to stop by, so we might as well close shop for the day and go out to eat. I’m sure Eldoon is expecting us, Trucy,” Phoenix said. He glanced around at the old law office littered with cards, wands, balls, and any other tools an up-and-coming magician like Trucy needed before returning her gaze. “So are you going to walk there by yourself or do I need to give you a piggyback ride like the last time?” he teased.
“Um, Daddy?”
Phoenix gave her a quizzical look. “Yes?”
Trucy’s eyes brightened with determination. “I want to show you a trick before we close the agency, okay? Please?”
Phoenix nodded slowly. “Alright…”
Trucy beamed, quickly escorting Phoenix to the sofa with her stuffed animals. Taking her place in front of him, she stood up straight. “Okay, Magical Magician Trucy here!” At this, Phoenix clapped enthusiastically while laughing at her little bit. He noticed a slight blush on Trucy’s face as she heard the familiar yet motivating sound.
“Hee hee,” she flushed. “Anyway, the Magical Magician Trucy will pull out something very special for someone in the audience,” she spoke in a bold voice. A little too bold for a child of nine, Phoenix thought. But Trucy wasn’t like any nine-year-old. She was much too special to be put into that category.
“You sir,” she said, pointing her wand at Phoenix. “The Magical Magician Trucy will pull out an amazing present from her magical panties. Something special. Something that proves that magic exists!”
“If it’s a pomegranate, I already have one,” Phoenix teased, raising the fruit for all the stuffed animals and Trucy to see.
“Daddy!” Trucy hissed in her backstage voice. “Quiet. I’m performing here!”
Phoenix merely grinned, holding back his laughter at the great enthusiasm Trucy seemed to have on stage. She practically lit up the otherwise quiet office with her presence and smile.
“Anyway,” she coughed discreetly, “the Magical Magician Trucy will now pull out this special present for the man sitting in the audience. Poof poof poof!” In that instance, Trucy reached into her panties, letting the suspense linger in the air like a true magician. “Poof poof poof, and out comes…!” Trucy grinned, and in her nicest backstage voice, she said, “Daddy, close your eyes!”
“Oh, okay. Didn’t know I was supposed to.” Obeying his daughter’s will, he did so. Everything became dark all too soon, and within a few seconds, he could feel Trucy’s hands on his head, doing something he couldn’t place his finger on. All he could deduce was that she was messing up his hair, not that it wasn’t messy in the first place.
“All right, sir, you may open your eyes! The Magical Magician Trucy has given you a very special and magical present which will give you endless good luck in your life!”
Her voice being the only light in his state, Phoenix once again obeyed, unable to hide his surprise at the fact that he was staring at his own reflection. (Apparently, the Magical Magician Trucy had pulled out a mirror from those panties of hers.) On his head, he noticed a bright blue beanie on his head with the pink stitched words “Papa”. His hand absentmindedly reached up and touched the soft fabric of the hat, his face unable to show any other face expression other than surprise.
“A magical item from the Magical Magician Trucy,” Trucy explained in that bold voice of hers. “It also spreads magical energy onto the person who is wearing it! So if you think of it like that, you also have some magic in you too, Daddy! Because I shared my magical powers with you, and don’t think I would give you any more if you lose it.”
Phoenix couldn’t help it anymore. He couldn’t hold it back. With short bursts, he began laughing, pulling the beanie closer to his eyes.
“What? Daddy! Are you laughing at the Magical Magician Trucy? And after I gave you some of my magic!” She pouted with her hands at her sides.
“No, no,” Phoenix laughed, “that’s not it.”
“Then what is it?” she asked worriedly. “You don’t like it?”
“No, that’s not it at all.” With a great big smile, he carried her into the air, giving her a great big hug. “I love it,” he whispered. “And I love you too.”
Trucy’s chest stung, and with tears welling in her eyes, she hugged him back hard. As hard as she could that he wouldn’t be able to let go of her. “I love you too Daddy. I love you so much…because I am your daughter.” And with a big grin, she cried enthusiastically, “Because I’m the Magical Magician Trucy, and you are my daddy, the Not-Magician-but-Equally-Magical Phoenix Wright!”
Phoenix smiled, setting Trucy softly down on the ground. “Then I guess I shouldn’t take this hat off because I’ll be left magic-less, and that wouldn’t be good, right, Magical Magician Trucy?”
“Ew, Daddy! You have to wash it too! I didn’t give it to you just so you could make the house smell without washing it!” Trucy cried.
“Oh, but won’t the magic fade then?” Phoenix replied, taking her small hand into his. He escorted her out the office, turning the lights off and locking the door after them.
“No, of course not! My magic is limitless!” she told him matter-of-factly.
Phoenix laughed. “You really are your daddy’s daughter, you know that?”
The pain that used to be there now gone, Trucy grinned. “Yup!”
Because she really was Phoenix Wright’s daughter now.
