Summary

A young kitten wanders into the junkyard one evening searching for a lost littermate, but who is she looking for?

There was a crash of junk tumbling down behind us, mummy’s pure white body twitched and turned around. Standing there was the biggest tom I had ever seen, he was a Siamese monster. Mummy pushed me and my sister into a hole in the trash. “My darlings. Hide here! I love you so much and where ever you are look up to the skies and I will be there watching over you. Stay together my children, I will always love you both” mummy wept, her body heaving up and down with sobs as she said her goodbyes.

I mewed as loudly as my tiny six week old lungs could manage, but still no reply. My mummy was gone, that big scary Siamese monster took her. I would never see her again, I cried looking around me than suddenly realised. My sister! Where was my sister? Where the heck was the tiny snow white fur ball with sparkling blue eyes that had been snuggled up with me shaking with fear when our beautiful mummy told us to hide? Would I ever see her again? I did not even know her name. Would I even survive to tell others of how I ended up all alone in the first place?

“Cindy, Cindy! Where are you?” Charlotte shouted. The little fair-haired six year old lifted up the overhanging quilt of her bed and peered underneath, still no sign of her tan coloured ten month old kitten. Charlotte lay upon the floor and thought “Oh, you were my birthday present so why can I never find you” She ran her hand over her sweaty brow, breathing deeply. “Oh, where are you Cindy Brown, I know you are in her somewhere”

Charlotte sat up and sighed, looking around her room. “Come on Cindy, purr, mew, make some sort of noise, I want to find you before I have to go to dinner with Auntie Sal”. Suddenly, she could hear a soft mewing coming from somewhere in the room, sadly for the little girl she had no idea where from. Unfortunately for her beloved pet, her long slim tail poked out from underneath her owner’s pile of stuffed toys where she was cheekily hiding from her owner, immediately telling Charlotte where she was.

“Cindy, there you are!" You are a silly kitty” the little girl laughed. “I can see your tail” Charlotte crawled forwards and reached under the teddies. Grabbing the kitten, she tickled her under the chin. “Charlotte, Charlotte, stop it!” The kitten giggled “Look it is evening now, I really need to get to that junkyard, and I have to find my sister” “Charlotte, come on. We’re late!” called the little girls mum from the bottom of the stairway, tapping her fingers impatiently on the banister.

“Oh, see you later Cindy. “ Charlotte sighed “Behave” Amelia (to other jellicles) watched her owner walk out of the room and down the stairs, and looked around the room. She leant forward ready to leap into a flying run, but something inside kept telling her to just climb under the stuffed toys, where she felt safe and warm, again. ´Oh go on Amie! Do you want to finally know your sister as a person or just as a white memory’ her conscience taunted her eerily.

Once she had heard the door slam shut, she finally pushed herself into a gallop and ran in the direction of the door. Slipping through the cat flap, she walked down the road towards a place known to other cats Jellicle Junkyard. Her heart was beating as fast as the cheetah chasing down its prey, she was so excited but nervous too. When she was a newborn, she could remember having a sister and hiding with her when her mummy told them to hide, and she had not seen her since that horrible night.

Amelia had heard from other jellicle cats that all abandoned kittens were always found and cared from, a kitten would probably been taken to the jellicle junkyard, with stood just off St James street. She stopped as soon as she saw the flood lights shining down upon a junkyard. Her ears twitched when she heard the jellicles music ringing out of the yard and flowing though the cloud filled sky, echoing into her ears. “This must be the place” she whispered rubbing her paw gracefully behind her ear.

The little tan kitten watched the entrance to the junkyard, breathing deeply. She saw a plump ginger tabby with tiger stripes and leopard spots ambling towards the gate, humming a familiar tune to herself. Amelia edged forwards whispering to herself “Come on Amie, this is not that scary, it is just a junkyard full of jellicles” She kept stopping dead in her tracks every couple of steps, telling herself to turn around and go back home.

Amelia, you are a silly kitten those other cats said that she will probably be here and if not I bet they know where to find her.” Amelia conscience shouted inside her head, “But, they also said all abandoned kittens were always found and taken here, then why was I not” she replied thinking back to when she was scooped out of the gutter half frozen to death, by Charlotte’s mother ( who is a vet) and taken in to her home. She would have found left so much easier if she had been picked up by a jellicle and taken to the junkyard.

“Oh, shut it, Amelia.” It fought back “Go on” The tan kit looked towards the flood lit yard and suddenly launched herself flying forward faster than she had ever run before. “Excuse me, Excuse me.” She shouted panting like a pollicle, millions of different thoughts running around and around her mind, from thoughts about her lost littermate to the fear of large tom jellicles looking down the noses at her tan brown coat thinking she was nothing but a spoiled house cat.

The ginger tabby suddenly turned around and watched Amelia sprint towards her. “Oh, Sweetie. Calm down, you will give yourself a heart attack.” Amie screeched to a halt and looked up at the queen, her conscience shouting “Maybe I made a mistake “again and again, the noise tromping around her little head making it ache like her heart did when she was first left all alone in the middle of the smallest junkyard in London.

“That’s better little one.” The tabby said kneeling down beside her “My name is Jennyanydots, but you can call me Jenny. Now you can tell me what is wrong” Amelia looked up at Jenny’s kind smiling face, thinking ‘Maybe this is a queen I can finally trust, the others looked so evil and devious’ But still the little kitten stayed perfectly silent, rubbing her fronts paws together nervously, the dirty dust flying from the floor and creeping into her eyes making them water.

“Um, my name is Amelia” she finally plunked up the courage to say. “I am looking for my sister” The kitten watched Jenny look from her to the gate of the junkyard. Something about the plump tabby told Amelia that her sister was not here, the kit looked down at the floor as a cold tear began to slowly trickle down her tan brown cheek, twisting and turning around her long slim whiskers, making them twitch like that of a little rabbit’s.

“Right, come with me little one. I will introduce you to Munkustrap, our tribe protector. He might just be able to help you” Jennyanydots said gesturing towards the gate. Amelia followed the kind queen into the junkyard, looking nervously at all the adult cats lounging about on various pieces of junk that towered over her casting dark shadows that seemed to chase the kitten as she walked towards this tall grey tabby tom and a gold and black queen.

“Who is this Jenny?" Munkustrap questioned stepping closer to Amelia. “Hello little one” The kit looked at the grey tabby and the queen standing beside him, smiling kindly at her. “Munkustrap, this is Amelia, she kind of ran into me outside. Go on, say why you are here, sweetie” she said letting Amelia step closer to the Protector of the Jellicle tribe and his mate, her conscience whispering to her to keep her head held high and not to drag her dusty paws along the ground, after all she wanted to be consided a good jellicle, not a house cat

“When I was about six weeks old, my mummy was taken away by this big Siamese monster. She told me and my sister to hide, so we did. But when everything went quiet again, I realised she was gone. I asked around once I had a home, and everyone said that she was probably brought and cared for here and I was hoping you knew her or at least know where I can find her” Amelia said tears flooding out of her lily-pad green eyes. The black and golden queen ( who was called Demeter) wiped a tear away from her eye, she had always had a soft spot for the kittens.

“Well, Darling. What was the sister’s name?” Munkustrap asked stroking the kitten behind her ear. ‘Maybe adult jellicles are not that bad’ her conscience whispered 'See I can talk nicely when you are not frightened. “I never knew her name, we were not talking when we were separated, and I never heard mummy call her by her name. She just called us both Sweetie pie or cutie.” She replied, a cute little smile now spreading across her face as she talked about her mummy, most of the memories she had of her were fall of sweet talk and gracful dancing.

“Ok, then. Can you remember what colour your sister was” the gold and black queen asked “If you can it will be easier for us to tell you if we know her” Amelia nodded the smile now completely gone from her face, she sniffed battling back the tears that were theatening to soak her little face, she stopped them but would she for long.“She was as white as snow all over. And she had pink inside her ears and her nose and lips were pink too”

“White all over you say Amelia. We might be able to help you out there” Demeter said staring at Munkustrap, buzzing now. All the cats were now looking at each other whispering quickly. Amelia could feel her lips quivering as she fought back the tears that were edging out of her eyes, she was nervous again as she began to rub her front paws together again. ‘Do they know her, do they know her, do they, do they.

Come on. I wish these adult toms and queens would start talking proper English instead of whispering to each other. I mean Charlotte speaks better English than this lot and she is only six human years old. Please tell me, Demeter knows something, look she is buzzing.I hope they do know where my sister is. I have already lost my mummy, so I do not want to have to lose her as well. All I can remember about her is that she was as beautiful as mummy, and as white as snow. Oh, come on Amie. They must know her, she must be here, and she as just got to be here, she’s just gotta!!!!

I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I spent days writing and rewriting it. I wanted this story to be perfect, because after looking though all the over fan fictions I have written, I realised they seemed a little rushed and unexplained, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I know not know where I got this idea from, I just sat down one evening with a laptop on my lap and started writing. Anyhow, I had good fun writing this chapter and hope I will have as much in following chapters. Please can you send me a review, I really enjoy reading your views and opinions on my writing.
