Okay, so sue me. I wanted to write something because I started to think that I was starting too feel too nostalgic. Why, you ask? …Uh, another story, another time… And time really isn’t something I have a lot of right now.
…Moving on, before I start ranting and scaring people away…
#sees people running away# Ah, screw it.
He didn’t hesitate before ringing the bell – perhaps he should have, considering who opened the door.
And the expression on said person’s face. Well, not expression perhaps, but rather level of intensity the pair of eyes that glared at him had.
He managed to choke out several words.
“Nice to see you, Rae.”
Her eyes did not leave his face for several moments while her right hand trembled, indicating that she was lacking the control she usually had.
Of course, what was left of her fragile control had shattered when she brought her hand up and across his face in what was unmistakably a slap.
Surprised wouldn’t have described what he felt – usually she showed no reaction that was easily visible.
Vigorous, skyscraper-high waves shot out from around them; which only proved further that she was distressed.
“Can you tell me what the hell you were thinking when you set out to take him down alone?” she hissed, every word shaking with her anger.
“I don’t really know,” he admitted, wincing as he touched his burning cheek.
“You were lucky when I decided to open this door at all,” she seethed, and something behind her shattered. “For all I know, I should have left you here. I should leave you here. You deserve it for going so foolishly tonight.”
“Well, how was I–”
“The others are freaking asleep, Robin! You should’ve at least woken one of us up!”
“I didn’t want to–”
“That’s no excuse, and you know it. Yet still you choose to ride that death machine of yours to take on Red X alone–”
“My bike is perfectly safe to–”
“You could’ve broken your ribs! You could’ve popped your heart faster than the washing machine when we let Beast Boy near it–”
“That has nothing to do with–”
“Damn right there isn’t! You’ve only just recovered from Slade’s hallucinogen, how dare you go risk yourself in a fight like that after all those blood-soaked bandages…”
“I’m wholly fine, Raven–”
“What do you take me for, Robin? An idiot with the brain replaced with melted marshmallows?! Your body is still recovering, and don’t you dare tell me otherwise! There are a lot of things that could have happened…”
“Yeah, but nothing did, did it?” When the same fire danced in her eyes again, he quickly added, “Raven, listen–”
“No,” she said, her whole figure trembling with the cold anger she beheld. “No, Robin, you listen. Had I fallen asleep, had I not have had insomnia, I would not have seen your leave and help you!”
He recalled the flash of black he’d experienced earlier in the fight, in which straight afterwards X had found he was weaponless. “That was you…?”
“And had I not been there, you could have – would have – been…” Here she faltered, as if snapping out of some reverie. She knitted her eyebrows, and the hand she had raised to emphasise her meaning had dropped to her side. “I… We would’ve…”
“…Raven?”
“I’m sorry,” she said quietly, turning her back onto him. Her anger seemed to have faded, or at least forgotten. “I should have known that you knew what you were doing. I should not have turned to you like that, with all the profanity and whatnot. You should have told someone, that’s all.”
And she disappeared in an aura of darkness and swirl of blue fabric, leaving him in a thoroughly confused state. Still somewhat dazed, he shrugged and went inside, closing the door as he went.
You would have been killed. We would’ve lost you.
I would have lost you.
Author’s Note: Yeah, short. I know.
But I really hope you guys liked it, at least.
