A/N: Wow, the Legally Blonde fanfiction has had a dry spell for all of us, huh? With the exception of the couple of totally awesome stories that have been posted or updated these past few weeks (I’ve read them all, they’re great), there hasn’t been much action in this fandom. So I came up with an idea, finally, and decided to contribute yet another random oneshot to my collection…

“Emmett Forest, we need to find you a girlfriend.”

Emmett looked up from his laptop.

What did you say?”

“I said,” Elle laughed, “We need to find you a girlfriend. You always seem so…lonely.”

“I think I’m fine, Elle, I have friends and everything.”

“Yeah, but friends can only do so much for you, if you know what I mean.” She said, giving him a look.

Emmett almost choked on his coffee, sputtering, “Wh-what?!

Elle laughed, shaking her head at him, “I’m totally kidding. But seriously, tons of girls would love to go out with you.”

But never the one I really want, he thought, looking back down at his laptop screen. “Elle-“

“Come on,” she said, “For me?” He looked up to see her pouting at him, her blue eyes shimmering.

He sighed. There was no denying Little Miss Woods Comma Elle of anything when it came to him. “Okay, fine.”

She squealed, causing him to wince, shaking his head.

“What about her?” she asked, pointing to a girl walking down the street outside the coffee shop, “Or her!”

He glared at her. “Elle.”

“Oh, okay, okay, we’ll wait a little while.”

Emmett sighed again. This was going to be a long day.

“Elle, I don’t do parties.”

“Come on, Emmett, it’ll be fun. Plus there’s a girl I know that would love you; she’s one of my friends from California.”

“Elle…” he paused, seeing her pout at him again, knowing he’d give in. “Okay, fine. What’s she like?”

“Well, her name’s Rachel, I went to high school with her…”

Three days later, Emmett was standing awkwardly at the corner of the room where Elle’s party (celebrating the end of first year finals) was well underway, both students from Harvard a few members of the Delta Nu Sorority, who had flown in for the event (because what Delta Nu would deny a party?), gathered in various groupings. Emmett caught sight of Elle from across the room, wearing a pink dress that made her stand out in the sea of mostly-black-wearing law students.

“Emmett!” her voice rang out over the conversations going on, “You made it!”

He smiled and noticed that she was dragging a girl behind her by the hand, who was wearing a silky blue dress similar to Elle’s.

“Emmett, this is Rachel. Rachel, this is Emmett, he’s the one I told you about.”

The girl smiled back, pushing a strand of brown hair behind her ear. “Hi.” She said, smiling.

“Hi, nice to meet you.”

“You too.”

“So…”

“So…”

An awkward pause covered the conversation, and Elle broke the silence. “Well, I’m have to go and greet the people coming in, so why don’t you two go and get something to drink. I’ll catch up with you in a few minutes.” She winked at Emmett as she sauntered off to the door, and both Emmett and Rachel laughed as they watched her walk away.

“Well, she’s certainly got just as much energy as she did in high school.”

Emmett nodded. “Well, we might as well get something to drink. It’s better than standing in the middle of the room.”

Rachel smiled back and followed, taking a seat next to him on the stool.

“So,” he started, “What brings you to Boston?”

“Well, I haven’t seen Elle since she left California, and I went away for college, so it’s been awhile. She called me about a week ago and asked if I wanted to visit and come to the party while I was here, so here I am.”

“Oh.”

“Between you and me,” she continued, “Lowering her voice, “She sounded really upset when I talked to her on the phone, and I was worried about her. She told me about being in love with this guy who she was sure would never love her back in the same way, and she just needed someone to be there for her.”

“Oh, Warner, right.” Emmett said, his eyes downcast, “He’s a jerk.”

“Really?” Rachel asked, taking a sip of her drink, “Because Elle said that she and this guy were friends, that he was so nice and caring, but she didn’t want to ruin their friendship. He even helped her study all the time and everything…what?” she asked, seeing Emmett’s face go pale. “Oh. My. God. You’re the guy!” she half-yelled, causing some people to turn around and look at her.

“I mean,” she whispered, “You’re the guy!”

He didn’t speak, instead trying to wrap his mind around the idea.

“But then…why would she call you here to set us up?” He asked.

Rachel sighed, “She was scared to get too close to you and have her heart broken again, I guess. I’m assuming Warner is the guy that she followed here, then, not the guy she was talking to me about.”

Emmett nodded.

“I guess she figured that if she couldn’t be with you, she still wanted you to be happy, so she decided I would be the perfect solution.”

Emmett sighed. “God, if I’d known…” he trailed off, shaking his head.

Rachel grinned, “You love her, don’t you?”

Emmett looked down sheepishly, “I really, really do.”

“Well, then, you’ve got to do something about it. You can’t just let her go on thinking you don’t feel the same way.”

“But I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I mean, I’m in love with my best friend!”

He had been half-yelling to be heard over the music, and just when he spoke his last sentence, it had stopped, the CD in the process of switching. The rest of the room turned to him, the law students who knew him smirking and the ones who didn’t looking confused. Elle stood a few feet behind him, looking completely and utterly floored.

“Emmett, you…I…Oh my God.” She shook her head, walking closer, “I never knew…”

“Neither did I. We’re two idiots, you know that? We’ve been feeling the same way and we never knew.”

“How long have you…felt that way about me?” she asked, neither realizing that the entire room was watching the scene play out.

“Since…around Christmas.”

“Oh my God.”

Rachel, sitting next to him at the bar, smacked him the arm. “Since Christmas! You butthead, you didn’t tell her?!”

“But- she didn’t tell me either!”

“I didn’t know how! I couldn’t just come up to you and say, ‘Hey, Emmett, do you want to quiz me on this case and by the way I’m madly in love with you-‘”

She was cut off by Emmett pulling her into him, his lips crashing onto hers. Clapping and murmurs of confusion were heard throughout the room and the very distinct voice of Enid Hoopes called out, “Well, it took you long enough!”

When they broke apart, Elle leaned on the counter as Emmett sitting in front of her on the stool. “Wow,” she breathed, smiling, “That was…”

“Amazing.” Emmett finished, smiling back at her.

“God, finally.” Rachel said, shaking her head, “This whole thing was way too twisted for me. You were falling in love at the same time and didn’t even know!”

Elle laughed, “I hope you don’t mind, I kind of stole your date.”

“Oh, it’s cool.” Rachel said, smiling, then turned back to Emmett, “I wasn’t into you in that way anyway. I could tell from the second I saw you that you were in love with her.”

Elle’s eyes widened, “How did you know that?!” she asked, incredulous.

“The way he looks at you. God, you are so oblivious!” she said, laughing.

“Well, at least we’re here now,” Elle said, smiling at Emmett as she lowered herself to sit on his lap, “And that’s what matters.”

“And now,” Emmett replied, beaming back down at her, “You can stop being a matchmaker and setting up your friends-“

“Shut up and kiss me, Forest.”

“Well, who could argue with that?”
