I’ve been itching to write more Sweeney Todd lately after my first oneshot was so well-received. But I’ve had such bad writers’ block that I couldn’t think of anything. So I basically just got fed up, sat in front of my computer and started typing. I’m hoping this turned out well!
I DO NOT OWN SWEENEY TODD. (Awww…)
Sweeney Todd closed his eyes as the whistle blew somewhere far away. He had been sitting in the same position—cheek resting on his hand and elbow on the window sill—for hours, deep in thought. It had been raining for almost the whole day and was now just starting to let up, though the sun still didn’t shine through the thick clouds.
The far off train whistle blew again. The melancholy sound was soft, distant, yet reverberated through the room. Because of the rain, he had had no customers that day, and now it was too late for any to come either way.
Still, though he expected to be somehow upset by this, he wasn’t. Now he wasn’t happy either. He just felt...neutral. It was strange. Sweeney Todd was fury, revenge, anguish. Barker was long dead. Who was he now?
His thoughts were cut short by another sound. It was the light closing of a door behind him. Normally, he was angered when she entered without knocking. But he was still numb to almost all emotion.
“Mr.T?” Nellie Lovett asked. Still, he did not turn to face her. “Mr.T,” she said a little louder this time, “I brought you a bit of supper…I know you’re probably not hungry, but I-“
“Shh…” There was a pause. Nellie raised one eyebrow. The whistle blew again. “You hear that…” She walked slowly over to the window.
“Oh…a train, yeah. You don ‘ear that sound around these parts all that often.” Another silence took the room. She didn’t particularly expect him to say anything. The baker turned to leave. “Well…I’ll just…leave you to your thoughts, shall I?” She opened the door. “The foods still ‘ere if you want it-“
“I remember when Johanna was just a little thing…when she heard the train whistle…it always made her smile…” The comment caused to stop in her tracks. had never been one to share information about his past like that. As she turned, she saw one the rarest sights in all of London.
Sweeney Todd was smiling.
Not a mad grin that he sometimes wore when he daydreamed about the long-awaited day when he would spill Judge Turpin’s blood. Just an honest, sincere, very small smile. Any passer-by on the street would have thought nothing of it. But to Nellie, who knew Sweeney Todd personally and helped him with his dark deeds, it was one of the most unbelievable things she had ever seen.
His eyes glistened in the fading light that came through the window. He seemed completely unaware of her presence as he sighed deeply, the smile now gone. The silence that followed was almost unbearable. The words were coming out of ’s mouth before they even processed through her mind
“You’ll see ‘er again, love.” Todd snapped his head around to look at her. Her mouth instantly clamped shut. She shouldn’t have said anything. She knew it.
She expected the barber to yell at her, lunge at her, do something. But he just stared. It appeared as if he didn’t know what to make of her words.
The whistle blew twice, breaking the stillness of the shop. She took a chance and turned once again toward the door without a word. Just as she was about to close it behind her…
“.” Here it came. She never should have opened her mouth. He would be angry for sure. But…
“Thank you…for the food…” It caught her by surprise. His tone was neither angry nor forced. Almost void of all emotion. But sincere. It was sincere.
No words were able to escape her throat. Instead, she managed a quick nod and closed the door gently behind her, descending the stairs briskly and taking a few deep breaths.
As she heard the whistle blow one last time, she paused. It was amazing just how far sound could travel in London.
Eh…don’t like the ending all that much. I sat here in my chair for a good fifteen minutes trying to think of another one, but that was the best I could come up with. How do y’all like it? Well, don’t just sit there, press the button and TELL ME! ;)
