A/N: Once again, sorry about the delay. I'll try and get a few posts up today and tomorrow. Read and review please!
One month later
“Morning, Stacey,” Keith said as he turned off the couple’s alarm clock.
“Mmm…” Stacey replied, turning over on the bed,
“Are you okay?” Keith asked.
“My left hip’s a bit sore,” Stacey muttered.
“Badly? Or just a little sore?”
“Little sore,” Stacey said, rubbing her eyes and reaching for her glasses. “I’m fine,”
“I’m worried, Stacey – you’re getting pretty big now,” Keith insisted.
As Stacey sat up, rubbing her left hip, she said, “Oh thanks.I’m fine, Keith,”
“No, you’re not. I know you’re not – at least let me give you a massage or something,”
“No,” Stacey replied, “I told you, I’m fine,”
“Sugar, are you sure you don’t want to stay home today? You know, just take it easy? You can do some errands if you felt up to it – it’d take some of the load off of you, right?”
“No, I can’t do that, Keith. I didn’t write up the lesson plan – so I have to go to work,” Stacey said.
“Stacey – don’t overwork yourself, I want you to be healthy, so everything goes smoothly, you know that, too,” Keith reasoned.
“I know,” Stacey snapped, “I’m fine, I’m going to work today,” as she walked to the bathroom.
Later that morning, as Keith dropped Stacey off at the subway station, he said to her, “Take it easy, Sugar, and don’t forget that we have an appointment with your doctor this afternoon,”
Stacey nodded and left, walking towards the subway station entrance.
That afternoon, as Stacey got to her doctor’s office, she saw Keith already sitting in the waiting room, waiting for her. He took her hand in his as she sat down beside him, while she took out her planner with her vacant hand and looked at her schedule, marking in new appointments and crossing out cancelled ones.
“Stacey, please follow me,” said the secretary, as she led Stacey and Keith into one of the rooms, where they sat down, waiting for the doctor to arrive.
“Hey there,” Dr. Moore said as she came into the room a few minutes later. “How’s everything?”
“Not bad,” Stacey replied.
“Good. Any weird symptoms?”
“My left hip was really sore this morning, but it got better after a bit,” Stacey admitted.
“We’ll take a look at that later, then. Anything else?”
“Not really…” Stacey replied. Keith looked at her in the eye and raised an eyebrow, prompting her to talk about her apprehensiveness about the delivery of the baby. She took his queue and answered, “Well…I’m getting a bit worried about the delivery,”
“Absolutely, we’re going to go over some details today, too. Let’s get the regular tests done first. Weight,”
Stacey stepped onto the scale, and stepped off again after Dr. Moore had penciled in the information on the meter.
“Ultrasound and blood test time,” Dr. Moore announced, as Greg helped Stacey up onto the bed.
Dr. Moore cleaned a spot on Stacey’s arm, put the syringe in, drew the blood into a tube and took it out as Stacey looked away. Then she wrapped a cuff around Stacey’s arm and checked her blood pressure, scribbling more information onto her clipboard. “Lie down. I’m going to take an ultrasound, and then look at your hip. Have you still been having backaches?” Dr. Moore asked.
“Minor backaches, they’re better though since I’ve been sitting more than standing…” Stacey replied.
“Okay, that’s good,” Dr. Moore said as she rubbed some cool, translucent gel on Stacey’s stomach and slid the gadget over it, while Keith and Stacey watched the computer screen, admiring their little baby girl. Dr. Moore put away the viewer, wiped Stacey’s stomach and then said, “The ultrasound’s done, Stacey, can you turn onto your side, so I can take a look at your hip?”
Stacey turned around, as Dr. Moore looked around her hip and back, occasionally prodding. “You look fine, it’s pretty normal, since the baby is still developing – you may also begin to feel the need to go the washroom more often, if you haven’t already, and that’s also normal,” Dr. Moore concluded.
“Alright, thanks,” Stacey said, relieved that the soreness in her hip wasn’t anything major.
“Urine test next door, please,” Dr. Moore instructed as she handed Stacey a clear container. When Stacey was done and sitting down next to Keith again, Dr. Moore checked her clipboard.
“Now, about the delivery,” Dr. Moore began, “First of all, you’ll need to decide if you want a natural birth or C-section – I recommend and prefer that my patients have natural births, since it is easier to recover from, and the process is just what I feel is… more natural. That is, unless something comes up and there rises the need to have a C-section. So, Stacey, which would you lean towards?”
“I don’t know…” Stacey replied, looking at Keith.
“Up to you, Stacey,” he said, taking her hand.
“Which hurts more?” Stacey asked, feeling like a little kid.
“It really depends, since with a C-section, it’s like any other operation – there’s prep time, surgery time and recovery time. The recovery takes slightly longer since it’s a surgery. Whereas, with a natural birth, it’s just more painful going through the labour and delivery itself. But it’s easier for the mother to recover,” Dr. Moore explained professionally.
Stacey nodded, and thought for awhile, “I think I’ll go with the natural birth… but can I have a bit more time to think it over?”
“Absolutely,” Dr. Moore replied, “If you do go with a natural birth, there’s the question of a water birth or a regular birth,”
“Difference?” Keith asked, curious.
“The water birth occurs in a bathtub, and some women find it more relaxing and soothing, less painful, but if you’re not a fan of swimming, you’d probably want to go with the regular birth,”
Stacey nodded in agreement with the regular birth.
“Okay,” Dr. Moore said, scribbling some notes down on her clipboard. “So the procedure goes like this: when you feel contractions – they may just be slight weird pains or even aches in your abdomen, you’ll want to call me to check if they really are contractions or not – or your water breaks, you call me. I’ll determine whether or not you should come to the hospital yet. When you do come, you’ll park in the patients section of the hospital and come to the Admitting section, where they’ll take you to a room and I’ll find you there. I’ll check your dilation until you reach around 10cm, and then we’ll get you ready for delivery. Any questions?”
“Will you be there the entire time?” Stacey asked nervously.
“Mm-hmm, and I’ll try and get you into a personal room, so you don’t have to share with anyone else,” Dr. Moore said.
“Am I allowed there the entire time?” Keith asked.
“Yep, as long as it’s a natural birth, the procedure for C-section is slightly different, but I doubt Stacey will have to have a C-section,” Dr. Moore replied.
“What might happen that will lead me to have a C-section?” Stacey asked, her hand tightening around Keith’s.
“Well, if the baby is in breach, or if something isn’t right. Most complications occur during labour, so we can’t really pre-determine anything for sure,” Dr. Moore said.
“Oh, alright…” Stacey sighed.
“Have you guys decided on a name yet?” Dr. Moore asked brightly.
Stacey looked at Keith, who replied, “Sort of…we’re 75sure about the name Emilie – with an ‘ie’ – Samantha…”
“I like that,” Dr. Moore replied, “It sounds beautiful,”
“Thank you,” Stacey replied, smiling.
“Now, you two will want to have everything ready at home, for the baby, as well, everything you might need for when Stacey does go into labour packed already, so there’s no last minute panicking,” Dr. Moore said, and as she handed a brochure to Keith and Stacey, “This is a brochure that has all you’ll need to pack, and what you’ll need to buy,” she explained.
Keith and Stacey browsed through the brochure and nodded.
“Alright, everything looks great, so I’ll see you guys in about a month,” Dr. Moore concluded.
