A/N: Hey, I'm back with another one-shot. This is actually my very first GH fic, just the third one I put up. Takes place during episode 5, in Mai's POV. Please R&R!

Before My Eyes

He was there to rescue me.

All in the blink of an eye, I saw it like this was all happening to me. I ran from the spirit wanting to punish what I’d done. I felt the presence of one other near me, calling my name, but I knew I couldn’t pay attention to them, or they would be hurt too. I had to save myself, pleading, begging the forgiveness of my betrayal.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorr—” I managed to implore before I lost my footing on the wet, slippery rock and fell backwards into the cold water.

A strong voice called my name before all was lost.

My clothes grew heavy and my head began to spin, water-logged. My lungs were crying out for air and I knew darkness would follow much too soon. An iron grip locked on my arm, nearly ripping my shoulder out of its socket. I felt my head break surface and pure air swept in my lungs.

I was dragged up onto dry land, hacking and coughing the liquid from my chest. My body wracked painfully on the ground, but a reassuring hand touched mine and everything was so suddenly okay. I weakly opened my eyes and saw Naru, looking down at me so thankfully, so lovingly.

“Mai, are you okay?”

I didn’t have the chance to respond. My daydream was whisked away and I jumped into the water to save Ayami.
