Morrie-chan’s Drabble Series:
Star Fox Drabble One: Victory
(Star Fox belongs to Nintendo. This story has not a timeline. The idea of the Gilgameshians is still something I’m figuring out. It’s not meant to be taken as a serious attempt at Fanfiction, just something I wrote and would like to share. Deal with it. Oh, and it’s written from Fox’s P.O.V.)
“We…we won.”
That’s the first thing I could think to say…after Gilgamesh was finally defeated. The race of people from a half-dead planet that thrived on destroying other races, along with the space colony turned weapon of mass destruction, had been destroyed themselves. It took a lot of effort for us all…but we did it.
My arms and legs were shaking visibly. It was from the mixed emotions I was feeling; exhaustion, shock and excitement. My teammates were completely silent for a few moments. All I could hear was my heart pound inside my head and my own breath that I was catching.
Falco was the first to break the silence. “Y-yeah…we did it.” Then, he burst into a laughter that was typically egotistical of him, but at the same time had this undertone of relief. Once the laugh subsided, he sighed deeply.
Next, Slippy spoke. “Thank goodness. I was beginning to think we weren’t going to make it out this time…” he piped, sounding on the verge of tears. I for one couldn’t blame him. Amanda had gotten hurt at one point in the fight, but she was alright. Slippy probably blamed himself for that, but I knew she’d knock that out of him.
Then Fay cheered. “I can’t believe how close we came this time!” the white canine piped, her voice as high and joyful as ever. I almost envy Fay for her endless optimism, but then again it gets her into trouble sometimes too. It’s a good thing Miyu has stuck by her.
Speaking of Miyu, she was the next to speak. “Yeah, it was close. But we won.” The lynx spoke. She sounded so calm that it scared me a little. Her ship was among those that took the most damage; the most damaged being mine. But she was always calm and collected.
“…I can be at peace now.” Krystal spoke; her accented voice was enough to remind me that if it was her instead of Amanda, I’d be worse off then Slippy. Probably because I’ve already lost her once and I really did not want to lose her again. “Fox, are you alright?” she asked me.
I sighed. “I’m fine but…I-I should be asking you that!” I said with a laugh that I’m not sure even now that I meant to come out. Krystal smiled at me from her Arwing, and I felt a rush of relief come over me that I never felt so strongly before that moment. “I’m fine.” She added.
“Nice going…McCloud.”
Wolf’s voice made me jump in surprise. I looked to my right to see his Wolfen right beside my ship. He wasn’t looking directly at me, but I still got the feeling that he was watching me. I couldn’t tell, though, whether he was relived because a huge crisis was adverted, or jealous because he hadn’t been the one to destroy Gilgamesh himself. I could never read Wolf easily.
“Thanks. Your team…”
Wolf cut me off. “I sent them ahead. They’re all alright, if that’s what you were going to ask.” I simply blinked, but I accepted this answer. After I got it, I forgot what my question was anyway. Without so much as a Farewell, Wolf’s ship flew off into the abyss that is space. I smiled, knowing that Goodbyes were never his style anyway.
The six of us sat in silence again. There wasn’t much to be said at that moment. Saving the galaxy is normal for us, as odd as that might sound to you. We’ve done it so many times that it’s not so big of a deal anymore.
“Can we…go home now? To Corneria?” Slippy spoke, breaking the silence.
“Yeah, the others are probably waiting for us there.” Falco added, a deep sigh following. Perhaps thinking of Katt.
“…yeah. Star Fox, let’s go!” I ordered, and the six of us went flying back to Corneria. Home.
