Chapter 1
Sarah startled herself awake before being terminated in her nightmare. Reaching for the gun beside her quickly, she sensed no other presence around her and focused back to the previous night's task. After all, nightmares were common for Sarah, no reason to dwell on them.
When John entered the room, Sarah began giving him a run down of everything she had figured. Keeping him out of the loop wouldn't work, but she couldn't tell him everything; right now this was her burden to bear. John still had a little while longer to be a normal kid and Sarah was determined to give him some normalcy while she still could.
The most abnormal part of their life so far walked aimlessly down the hallway in front of them in little clothing. John being somewhat of a gentleman averted his eyes but Sarah stared. Sarah stared at the machine while it passed and stared at the spot it was last visible for a moment longer, thinking of what to say to the machine once it dressed.
Sarah got ready to visit an old "friend" while John ate breakfast and Cameron stared out the window or at John or no where in particular. In the shower, Sarah's thoughts went to Cameron, her faux step-daughter, the protector of her son, a machine. While Sarah's hatred for machines was still strong, she had to admire Cameron's no-nonsense way of handling things. Cameron didn't need forgiveness for not being human, nor did she need Sarah's approval to kill to protect John. While it aggravated Sarah at times, she was grateful, not that she'd ever say that out loud.
Sarah took a breath before she entered the kitchen, wanting to comment on Cameron's previous state of undress, if only to ease the tension in her own mind. Seeing Cameron fully clothed, Sarah commented, "Much better, when you wear clothes, much better." Tension eased in her mind, Sarah went through the layout of the school with the teens. Sarah was slightly comforted by John and Cameron's words that they could handle it but still nervous as any mother would be.
"Don't you kiss me." Sarah said in a joking yet serious tone. It would be one of the few times Sarah would ever make somewhat of a joke and Cameron wasn't going to let it go to waste. With a quick look at John's retreating form, Cameron stepped closer to Sarah. Leaning in, Cameron placed a soft, light kiss on Sarah's lips and let it linger for a moment before pulling back.
"I don't take orders from you." Cameron reminded the shocked woman whose mouth had become ajar and eyes had slightly glazed over. With a frighteningly human smirk, Cameron walked out the door backwards, keeping her eyes on Sarah until she was completely outside. Without another glance, Cameron made her way toward school.
