My sister and I go to the same high school, but we don’t always walk home together
My sister and I go to the same high school, but we don’t always walk home together. When I’m alone, I think a lot. This is what I thought up walking home last week to keep myself entertained.
Disclaimer: All characters belong to Stephenie Meyer. I’m just messin’ with ‘em.
Dedication: This fic is for Erin & Jessica, my best friends in the entire universe. Thinking of them always makes me happy. I love them to itty-bitty pieces. I hope this makes them laugh, since they’ve both seemed kind’a down lately.
It was not unusual for me to be at the Cullen house. With the wedding and all it entailed rapidly approaching, I was there nearly everyday. However, it was unusual for me to be in their garage. For you see, my wonderful vampire family had no need for air conditioning, and their home was as sweltering inside as outside in the hot July sun.
I’d been standing in the kitchen discussing decoration color schemes with Alice (unwillingly) when Emmett walked through, exiting out the door leading to the garage. A blast of chilly air met my overheated skin. I moved us in to join him. Emmett was overjoyed at the company, because although Rosalie was in there with him, she didn’t talk much when working on her cars, unless, of course, she needed someone to pass her a tool.
I sat down on the cement ground, leaning my back against the cold wall of the relatively large room. It felt heavenly. It also reminded me of a certain fiancé of mine who was missing in action. He’d disappeared somewhere after picking me up from Charlie’s and depositing me in his pixi sister’s hands. I dismissed the thought, deciding I’d rather not know where he was. Odds are it had something to do with our marriage and the honeymoon I’d reluctantly let him have free reign over. The less I knew, the better off I was. I prayed he wouldn’t spend too much.
“Bella, stop spacing out on me.” Alice’s soprano met my ears, and I looked up to find her standing over me, hands on her hips. I gave her a small apologetic smile she chose to ignore. “Now, answer. Are you more inclined to dark teal or pale turquoise?”
“Um…” I had learned ‘I don’t care’ was not an acceptable answer as soon as we started this crazy wedding stuff. “They both sound good to me.” I offered feebly. Maybe she’d let me escape if I approved of both, and then she’d choose.
“Not good enough. Pick one.”
I sighed and looked away from her determined face. My eyes landed on Emmett, who was scribbling away at some papers on a desk parallel to the wall adjacent mine. I’d only just begun to examine his hunched over form when he stood up, turning in my direction with a strangely out of character, scolding expression. “Alice, quit bugging Bella. That wedding stuff is boring.” His typical goofy grin reappeared as he pulled whatever he was working on off the counter. I realized now they were blueprints. He made his way over to me, kneeling down. “ I have something fun for us to do.”
“Emmett.” Rosalie’s sharp voice made him flinch. We both raised our heads to find her out from under the car she’d been fiddling with. “Weddings are important. Never let me catch you belittling them by calling them boring again.” Her golden eyes flickered to my face. “Bella,” I worried she was about to reprimand me for not being more concerned with my own marriage celebration, “pick the pale turquoise.”
I guess Rosalie was attempting kindness in her own way. “Turquoise it is.” I almost laughed in relief. Alice clapped, glad I’d made a decision, even if it was under another’s influence. She vanished, probably running to the phone or computer to place in the orders she needed so desperately to make.
Emmett, like me, didn’t see the big deal about colors. “Yeah, yeah, turquoise.” He was midway through rolling his eyes when he received a glare from his wife, sobering him immediately. To save his butt, he changed the subject. “As I was saying, I have something fun for us to do.”
I glanced at the blueprints in his hands, wondering if I should be worried. “And that would be?”
“Let’s build a car.” He sounded so proud of himself for thinking up the idea.
“You’re kidding.” I didn’t hold back my laughter.
He shook his head. “Nope. I’m serious.”
I noticed with slight horror he really was. “Why?”
“Because in a few short weeks you’re going to be a Cullen.”
“Which means I have to build a car?” I didn’t see the connection.
“Yeppers.”
“Okay…”
“Come here, Bella.” I looked up once more in surprise. Rosalie was beckoning me over with her index finger, curling and uncurling the perfectly manicured digit impatiently. I stood and rushed to her side, somehow managing not to stumble. It wasn’t often she talked to me, much less wanted me anywhere near her, so I was eager to comply with her demands and get on more sisterly terms. If we were going to be family forever, I wanted to be on her good side. “You see this baby?” She waved her hands in a very Vanna White fashion toward the machine she’d previously been working under.
At first glance, I’d believed the sleek black car to be Carlisle’s Mercedes. But upon closer inspection, I saw I was wrong. Very wrong. It was longer, with sharper angles, and a fancy looking rear. Actually, it looked a lot like, “The Bat Mobile?”
“The Cullen Mobile.” Emmett corrected, bouncing up behind me, clearly ecstatic. “I designed it myself.”
“Yes, but I built it.” Rosalie added, opening the back side door to slide in. She motioned for me to follow, and I did so cautiously. The interior was dark, the seats leather. Emmett took the driver’s seat. The doors closed automatically behind us, and for a moment, it was pitch black. Then the light show began. Buttons all along the ceiling and dashboard of the car began to flicker like Christmas lights, stopping to fade and become a slight glow.
“Wow,” was all I could spit out.
“You haven’t seen anything yet.” Rosalie leaned over the front seats, clicking something. A section of the car above me came to life, displaying a blue screen I recognized as the loading page for a DVD player. She hit another button, making the seats recline. “You can watch movies,” another button, “or the stars.” The flat screen hummed, pulling back to form a moon roof. Instead of the vast picturesque sky she’d envisioned, it was the pale ceiling tiles of their garage.
“Oh, oh, show her Rose!” Emmett fidgeted in his seat.
“Rose?” I asked.
Rosalie leaned over again fiddling with buttons, and another, smaller, LCD screen lit up on the dashboard. A map was displayed on its face, with a little star indicating where we were. It was a GPS system. “Insert destination.” The voice that left its speakers, however, was far from being standard with GPS equipment. It was Rosalie. She really had made everything from scratch. Since we weren’t going anywhere, she turned it off. The two of them proceeded to show me everything about their high-tech car, from XM radio, to surround sound speakers, to voice activated commands. I was in awe. To think they’d built this. It was amazing.
“Now for the best part.” Rosalie reached over to grab a joystick looking lever between the passenger and driver seat. She flipped open the top of it with her thumb, revealing a hidden button, large, blue, and screaming to be pushed. I had to admit, I was curious. What would happen when she hit it?
The car lurched suddenly to the side. I squealed, not expecting it. “Don’t you dare push that button.” Edward peered down at us through the moon roof. My heart leapt in fear, startled instead of thrilled by his out of the blue appearance.
“Get off of my car!” Rosalie withdrew her grasp, reaching up in an attempt to throttle him. He was quicker. The car lurched again. My door opened, and Edward pulled me out and up into his arms.
“I know for a fact you haven’t gotten all the kinks out of that particular feature.” He stated, face hard as his siblings removed themselves from The Cullen Mobile.
“For your information, Edward,” Rosalie snapped, annoyed he’d ruined her demonstration, “I have almost all of those problems solved.”
“Almost.” He emphasized. His topaz eyes looked down to meet my brown ones, and he set me down on my feet. He returned his attention to his sister. “Almost doesn’t guarantee Bella’s safety. She’s not indestructible. If something went wrong, she could’ve been hurt.”
“Nothing would’ve gone wrong.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Alice would’ve said something.”
“Yes, but what if-”
I interrupted their arguing. “What does the button do?”
Emmett jumped at the opportunity to explain, picking up his discarded blueprints from the floor. “Ta da!” He showed me his illustration.
I didn’t understand. “What is it?”
“A foot.” He explained simply.
My sense of understanding plummeted a few more miles. “A foot?”
“Yep, this car becomes a foot, and a leg, kind’a.”
I looked over to Rosalie. She was the one who actually described things fully enough for me to get them. She took the hint, stealing the papers from Emmett’s hands. She flipped through a couple of them, pulling one out to show me. “This car becomes the foot of this Giant Robot.”
“It’s like Transformers meets Power Rangers meets Gundam Wing.” Emmett beamed.
“I’m not following.” Surely they were messing with me.
Edward placed his hand on my shoulder. “The drawing she’s holding is a robot composed of six morphing automobiles. Esme and Carlisle never wanted to join us in piloting it, so Rose never started constructing it. But since you’re joining the family, we finally have enough people.” He finished with a bright smile.
I stared at him, my mouth hanging open. I tried to shake off the shock. “What, you guys want to fight evil in it or something?”
Rosalie laughed. “No. We just want to be a Giant Robot.”
“We could have so much fun, it’ll be the ultimate family bonding! And once we finish this one, we can build another and battle each other!” Emmett was beside himself with anticipation.
Oh yeah, I could see the headlines now. ‘Unidentified Giant Robots Seen Fighting Outside Forks, WA. Investigation Underway.’ I stole a glance in Edward’s direction, surprised to find him truly entertained by the idea, still grinning widely. Then the mental image of him in control of a silvery super fast, super powerful humanoid looking machine invaded my brain. It made sense for him to be excited. I couldn’t resist giggling. It was just so bizarre. They were all lunatics. Racecars weren’t enough for them. They needed transforming robot cars too. What was I marrying into?
“Oh, Bella, I almost forgot.” He snapped out of whatever robot battle royal he was fantasying about to meet my gaze. “I bought you ice cream.”
“You did?” So that’s where he’d disappeared to.
“Yes. It’s in the Volvo. I’ll go get it.”
His cool hand left my shoulder. As he started walking away, I voiced my concerns. “You left ice cream in the Volvo? In this weather?”
Alice popped her head back into the garage. “He sure did. It melted all over the backseat.”
His reactionary expression was priceless.
There you go. Odd little oneshot. I hope you laughed at least a little. Poor Edward. You think he’d be smarter than that, haha. Feel free to correct my typos. Constructive criticism is always welcome. Thank you so much for reading!
