Chapter 1:

The Whisper Before the World Went Black

"What are you saying Hales?"

"What I am saying is that I am done Nathan…I am done trying to change you. I should have never done it in the first place. It wasn't fair to you."

"But Haley I love you…I want to make this work. I want to be a family again, a good husband to you and a good father to Jamie."

She could see in his eyes that he meant every word he was speaking, but the betrayal she was feeling was too much to ignore. Nathan had lied to her, and the moment she received the truth from him last week it was like someone had slapped her in the face and knocked the wind out of her. Looking back up at her husband...

"Nathan, you broke my heart" Haley said fighting to hold the tears back

"Please don't say it like that Hales" Nathan whispered

"Why couldn't you have just told me the truth about Carrie? Why didn't you just ask her to leave."

Haley stood impatiently waiting for Nathan's reply. She needed to let him know that inside her heart was breaking. She felt completely numb that night she walked into their bathroom and found that slut with her hands all over HER husband. Deep down she knew nothing had happened, but why had Nathan not brought the flirting to her attention sooner. Why had he let it get so out of control, and why the hell didn't he tell her about the kiss.

"Hales…Just hear me out…I know I should have told you…I just didn't want to hurt you."

"You didn't want to HURT me? Haley said taking a step back. How do you think I am doing right now Nathan…I AM hurting. Much worse than if you would have told me in the beginning. Nathan we are married. You are supposed to tell me these things. You NEED to tell me these things."

Haley could barely hold back the tears. She didn't want Nathan to see her cry, but she was failing at hiding her tears. Of course she was pissed, but on the inside she was falling apart. Why couldn't she just fall into his arms and tell him that she still loved him. She wanted to so desperately, but being the stubborn person she was she needed to get to the bottom of this.

" I know I do Haley, and I can promise you that I will never keep anything from you again."

Nathan was trying so desperately to win back his wife's trust. He knew she was justified with her anger towards him. He knew how badly he had hurt her. He also knew how badly he wanted to wrap his arms around her and draw his lips towards hers and kiss all their problem away, but the look on her face told him that that was not going to happen.

Nathan reached out his hand and brought it to the tear that rested just above Haley cheek. Wiping away the tear he took in the sight of her standing before him arms crossed in front of her. Did she know how beautiful she looked right now?

"I love you Haley…and that will never change. Please give me a chance to show you that you don't have to try to change me anymore. I am going to be the one to make the changes from here on out. I will change if that is what it takes to keep you."

Haley stood there motionless looking at the man before her…Oh, how she wanted to believe him. He had hurt her so much in the past few months though. Could he really make up for that all in one night?

"Nathan, I know that you love me and that you didn't want to hurt me, but the fact is, You did hurt me. It is going to take time. I just need to be alone right now."

Haley couldn't control her tears any longer. Her shoulders began to shake as the bottled up emotions from this past week began to pour out and spill down her cheeks. She bumped into Nathan's shoulder as she ran past him. She was trying desperately to make her legs move fast enough to get her into the house and out the front door to her car in the driveway. The last place she wanted to be was here at this party with everyone staring at her. Jamie was upstairs asleep. Nathan could stay with him while she drove around to think in silence. As she was nearing the door she heard Nathan yell out from behind her… "Hales, please wait"….It was too late. she needed to get way from here she slammed the door and ran for her SUV in the driveway.

Nathan stood unable to move for several moments after Haley left. He wandered what had gone wrong. He was so sure that being here tonight with Haley and by talking to her he could make her understand. He felt so bad as he stood there just moments before and saw the tear pool up in her eyes. He had done that to her. He was the reason she was hurting so badly. He wanted to take it all back. How could he have been capable of hurting her like that. Why wasn't he honest with her from the get go? Nathan stood there thinking about everything he had done wrong and wondering how he was going to fix it because the truth was, the damaged had already been done. It was too late to take it all back.

Dan Scott had been driving around all night after leaving that woman back at the motel room. The look on her face was priceless as he told her that he had just been released from prison for murdering his brother. He was just so proud of himself sometimes.

Dan found himself parking outside of Nathan and Haley's house. He looked around and saw all of the cars and wandered what was going on inside. Dan wished that he had been invited to the party, but truth was as long as Nathan was with that slut he called a wife, he would never be apart of his son's or grandson's life. Just as Dan was about to pull away from the house he saw Haley running out the front door…crying.

"Well, It looks like I might get my wish after all" Dan said in a devilish voice.

As Haley neared her car and pulled out her keys she noticed a man walking toward her…who is that she wandered. Just seconds later she got her question answered as Dan's face came into view.

"I thought I told you to stay the hell away from my family Dan." Haley said trying to keep her voice steady. The last thing she needed was for Dan to know she and Nathan were having trouble with their marriage.

Dan took a step closer to Haley. "Well, well, If it isn't Haley James"

"That's Haley James SCOTT" Haley said almost spitting out the words at him.

Dan shook his head "Not for long it isn't"

Haley noticed the exact moment that Dan's eyes went jet black with hate. Haley tried to step back but Dan pinned her up against her car. She desperately tried to wiggle free, but it was no use, he was too strong for her. His hands came up around her neck. She gasped for breath but nothing came. Haley tried to dig her finger nails into the side of his face, but his hands began to tighten their grip around her throat and Haley then felt herself being lifted from the ground. Everything was going black. She managed to whisper only one word before the blackout overpowered her…"Nathan."
