The Force Field

“Ooooooooooooooooooooo” the crowd screamed as one in an earsplitting experience. I looked around at the thousands who had turned up to see the air show. Some were waving there arms in the air cheering and others (the teenagers) were acting like they were too old for the entertainment. A group of young kids ran past laughing and pointing to the planes over head. The planes were twisting and turning inside the force field lighting up the sky with bright coloured clouds.

Smiling I made my way over to one of the many refreshment tables lining the large stadium these people had it coming to them, to think that they thought that the earths atmosphere was no longer breathable is insane. It was just some silly ruse by the government to hide what was really going on. Awhile back my crew and I had gotten in trouble at school for some reason that I’ve forgotten. Well anyways we didn’t know were we were going to go cause there isn’t really anywhere in the city other than the reject-side. Now the reject side is where all the old run down warehouses are. There were also stories about the reject-side that scared people away from it.

“Oh come on guys, your not all Chickens.” Chase shouted as he run ahead of the rest of the crew through the empty streets of the outskirts of the reject-side.

“No way chase in your dreams I’m not scared of anything” Darcy yelled back to the blonde leader of the group. His black curls blowing in the fake breeze.

“Umm guys I think this is a really bad idea” Page said, her brown eyes darting from side to side as if she was scared of a monster coming out of one of the doors of the warehouse that lined the streets.

“Why you scared” Chase chucked in her face, laughing he went behind her and started to push her further into the reject-side.

“Oh come on chase leave her alone” I walked up and slung my arm around her in a protective way.

“Its ok I’m not scared” I knew she was lying by the way that she was holding on to her cross necklace, She always clung to it when ever she was scared or in this case terrified.

Chase laughed “It’s not like there’s any monsters that are going to eat you or are there” I frowned he was once again reminding us that he was in charge and that was bothering me. He was only in charge because he scared the rest of the crew into it. He bossed us around like we were his slaves to do his every biding.

“Mon..s..ters!” Page stuttered

“Don’t worry Page it’s just an urban myth they aren’t real.” I reassured her.

“Yeah no wombat is going to come out and get you” Darcy said “hey Chase isn’t that right” he turned to Chase to support his claim but only to find he was smirking in a evil way just as if he was implying that a wombat would come out one of the doors and eat us.

“So…” I started trying to gets us off evil wombats and onto subjects that wouldn’t scare Page but like normal Chase interrupted.

“How about we go look inside that one” Chase pointed over to a large red warehouse with paint pealing off it.

“Umm ok” Darcy said, I could tell that he was unsure about it but who was he to object, if Chase said something we’d do it.

We started moving across the street to the large door as a group but by the time we got there chase was already holding the door open and smirking. We all walked into the darkness unsure of what to expect. But as always we had Chase leading the way and what could go wrong.

“Can one of you find a light switch?” He ordered. None of us objected we all started to feel around on the walls. Sure I was wondering there might not be a light switch but no-one argued with Chase.

“I found one” Darcy shouted, he was always trying to show off when ever chase was around incase he was granted with a smile. After a few seconds wait the lights flicked one by one on.

We all gasped, it was beautiful there seemed to be thousands upon thousands of plants growing through an opening in the far wall. There was nothing else really other than a large open space where the plants hadn’t yet moved in.

“Come on lets check it out” Chase ordered as he made his way over to the plants. We followed like good little servants.

“Oh look at that one” Page exclaimed her eyes wide, she was staring at a; what we had only been taught to of been a kangaroo paw. Now by this stage I was wondering about what was going on. There seemed to be a lot of plants that people hadn’t seem to of seen since we all hid under a force field. We had been taught at school that they all had become extinct.

“Come on lets go see where they have come from” Chase said

“Are you sure Chase this mightn’t be a good idea.” I argued surprised to hear my own voice state that, what I was doing, this was like suicide.

“What you scared of the wombats” Chase retorted his face getting flushed with anger

“No...” I started

“Good then we go” he once again cut across me. I opened my mouth to say something and then I saw the others faces, they were pleading with me they’re eyes telling me that they couldn’t cope if I got chucked out for arguing. I sighed knowing that I should do what would be better for them. Even though I knew this was a bad idea I had to respect they’re wishes.

We started to make our way through all the plants when I suddenly had this strange taste in my mouth.

“Can you guys taste that?” Darcy asked both Page and I nodded but Chase just kept walking.

“Yeah it tastes I don’t know sort of fresh” I stated, once again licking my lips trying to get more of a taste.

“Yeah I does” Page agreed

“You lot keep walking” Chase called back to us. I rolled my eyes but started to walk anyway. After a few minutes of us walking through the shrubbery we finally made it and what we saw made us lose our breath.

I grabbed a drink off the table and took a sip… yum cordial just the thing to give a crowd of children.

Sugar!

One of the table attendants turned around and asked me how I was enjoying the show. I answered like all the teenagers at the event would.

“It’s ok but I’ve seen better” I smirked and turned away from the table. I spotted Page and made my way over to her.

“Everything ready” I asked her and she nodded, yes, in response

“Then let’s get this show under way”

We were looking out onto the most beautiful thing ours eye had ever seen it was a large field of grass with what I can only guess to be cows. In the distance there was tree covered hills and a small wooden house surrounded by a group by trees.

“Wow” Page said stunned

“Come on you lot lets go out there and check things out” Chase ordered

“Umm chase what about those, what ever they are?” Darcy asked as he pointed to the black and white cows.

“Oh come on do you really think that they would anything to you?” he scoffed back “See I’ll show you” ha nice his taking one for the team, not us for once. I guess he doesn’t want to be seen as a Chicken. He started to walk out towards the cow; I guess he never saw it coming because he turned around to wave at us when he was only metres away it.

The cow seeing him as a threat started to charge at him and in a blink of an eye Chase was lying face down in the dirt. Ah what a memorable day.

We never saw the man or how he got there I guess we were busy looking at Chase and his embarrassing moment but there was a man there and he was flapping his arms at the cow. It must have done the trick what ever the trick might have been because the cow ran away and gave Chase death glares from the other side of the field.

The man motioned for us to go over, looking at each other unsure what to do. Darcy shrugged.

“What have we got to lose?” He asked and he started to walk over to where Chase was now getting to his feet.

“Come on Page lets go we have to make sure they don’t something stupid” she nodded and followed me over to where Chase, Darcy and the man where.

“Hi I’m Red” Red stuck out his hand for us to shake, Chase just looked at it. I reached out and shook his hand instead; I introduced myself and the rest of the crew and then asked where we were.

“Well you on earth, where do you think you are?” Red asked us puzzled, then his eyes brightened “oh wait I know where your from your from the force field”

“Yep, Umm I hate to ask this but shouldn’t we all be dead if were outside the force field?” I asked the question had been bugging me for some time now.

“Yeah” Darcy agreed with me “Well you see” he pointed behind us; we turned around and saw a big white mass of light that was sitting around the opening that we had come through. “When the force field went up it was in a time where there was a lot of killing and bad stuff going on all round. So the government decided that they would choose a select thousand people who they would protect and I guess they thought that then the rest of the world would kill each other off there would still be humans on earth.”

We all nodded even Chase; I think his run in with the cow scared him so much that he couldn’t speak.

“The only problem with is that we didn’t kill each other.” He sighed “I don’t know how those people could of left this” he motioned around us “It’s just so beautiful”

“Yeah” Page agreed “How could they. I wish my parents could see this”

“Me too” Darcy put in

For the first time since the beginning of the conversation Chase said something “Well how about we do something about that” once again he was putting himself out as the leader. “You guys know about that air show next week-end?”

I flicked my phone open and press send. The message ‘go’ was sent out to everyone.

“ooooooooooooooooooo” the crowd screamed again. I laughed out loud thinking about how they would react after what we intended to do.

“Come one Page lets go and find Chase” She just nodded, after the time out side the force field she had become even quieter than normal.

“Hey I don’t think Chase should be the leader I think you should be. You actually care about us and what happens to the crew.” She said suddenly as we made our way through the crowd; that was still looking upwards to the planes. I swelled with pride she really thought that.

“Thanks” I smiled at her and that smile conveyed more of what I was feeling than any words could ever. She smiled back at me as if she was glad that was off her chest.

“Maybe one day we can do something about it?” she asked

“Yeah maybe one day we can but not today.”

“No not today” she agreed

We were nearly over to where we had said we would meet Chase when the force field started to flicker.

“Come on Page we’re going to have to hurry up if we want a good view.” We started to run. The field flickered again and the crowd who last time had thought they had imagined it burst in to whispers which changed into screams and shouts when the field flickered once again.

“Finally you guys made it” Chase yelled over the crowd as we made it to him. He was standing at the top row of the stadiums seats; it had taken us a lot of time to get up the steps. We all looked down at the crazy people running around screaming and shouting below us.

The field flickered once more then it was gone and we were left smelling and tasting real air and looking up at the real sky. As one the crowd stopped and looked up and screamed.

All over the city people were looking up to the sky and screaming. And all we could do was laugh and take in the fresh air.

Darcy and Red had broken into the control system and stopped the force field. Actually they had destroyed the whole machine so there was no chance for it to go back on line anytime soon.

The crowd below us finally stopped screaming and found that they could breathe. They all looked around wondering if they had all died and gone to heaven. I grinned at the thought of them thinking that.

We all looked at each other and started to clap soon everyone in the stadium was clapping with us and laughing.

Sighing I took a deep breath now we all had the chance to see the beauty of the world and if the government tried to stop it they would have the people to answer to now.
