Disclaimer: Still don’t own them, but it never hurts to dream‼
The rain was pounding on the roof of the limousine as it drove her towards the graveyard. She wasn’t alone in the limousine; she had her best friend and her husband present. They were trying to get her to talk about what had happened and how she felt, but she had completely shut down. Temperance Brennan was used to loss, hell she had dealt with it personally for most of her life, but this appeared to be one death to many for her to handle.
“Come on sweetie, please talk to me.” Angela Montenegro pleaded.
“Ange, there is nothing to talk about.” was the ice cold reply.
“Clearly there is, you have just lost a close friend you must feel something.”
Turning towards her friend sat next to her on the back seat, Brennan closed her eyes, took a deep breath and said, “Ange I do feel something, I’m not some heartless robot. But talking about my feelings will not bring him back; it will not turn back the clock and stop him from dying. What’s done is done; all I want to do is get through today and go back to work.” After finishing this statement she turned back to look out the window, at the rain as it fell down in sheets.
Angela touched her arm gently, leaving her hand there, letting her friend know that when she was ready to talk she would be there to listen. In a move that shocked her and spoke more to Angela about Brennan’s frame of mind than any words could, Brennan placed her hand on top of Angela’s, hoping that it conveyed that she was fine.
Once they pulled up to the graveyard, Temperance opened the door of the limo, opened her large black umbrella, remembering that it was in fact his, and stepped out. She looked up at the sky and saw the dark black clouds circling above, closing her eyes when she felt the rain as it splashed onto her face. She felt as though the weather was in its own way mirroring how she was feeling at that present moment in time. She waited for Angela and Jack to remove themselves from the limo, once they were stood by her side, Angela instinctively reached for Brennan’s hand and squeezed it gently.
“Ready when you are sweetie. I know how hard this is going to be for you.” Angela said sympathetically.
“I’m fine Ange, let’s go.” Brennan said before letting go of Angela’s hand, and stepping onto the path which led to where the ceremony was to happen. After a 10 minute walk the party of three arrived at the graveside, to see their departed friend’s family stood looking for them.
“Dr Temperance Brennan?” an older woman asked, almost staring at Brennan as if trying to gauge her reactions.
“Err…yes.” Brennan replied looking anxiously at Angela and Jack.
Seeing Brennan’s eye line shift, she spotted Angela and Jack stood hand in hand with solemn looks on their faces. “Ahh…and you two must be Angela Montenegro and Jack Hodgins.” She said, less as a question and more as a statement.
“Umm yes we are.” Jack replied, trying his hardest to summon up a smile.
“My son talked about you two a lot, he admired the work that you both did, and even though he may not have expressed it very well he did care about you both.” She said shaking with repressed tears.
“Thank you, that means a lot. I just want you to know that I speak for all of us when I say we were very privileged to work with your son, he was one of the kindest people we have ever known.” Angela replied, giving his mother a brief but tender hug.
