Sawyer stirred and blrealy opened his eyes. “Uhh” He groaned. He glanced over a t the clock. 7:05 am. He swung himself out of bed and sat for a second on the edge of the bed. He looked at Kate. She was sleeping soundly. He smiled. She was getting better. It was still going to be a long road but she was well on her way down it. Sawyer rubbed his eyes and stood up. He had to get up and feed those damn horses. He quietly began to walk out of his (their?) room. Suddenly pain shot through his foot. “Son of a bitch!” He yelled. Kate sprang up and looked around widely. Sawyer jumped around holding his foot and cursing under his breath. She got up and ran over.
“Sawyer? You ok?” She asked. Sawyer winced and smiled at her.
“Yeah I’m okay freckles.” He smiled again. “Well now that you’re up get dressed. I have something to show you.” Kate frowned and raised an eyebrow.
“What is it?” She wined. Sawyer grinned, showing his dimples.
“Well now that would be telling.” He drawled. He headed out the door and turned back. “You want porridge for breakfast?” Kate wrinkled her nose. Sawyer chuckled. “Or not.”
“Sorry.” Kate said, grinning.
“You’re not a bit sorry.” Sawyer said. Kate giggled. ‘What you want sassafras?” Kate thought for a second.
“Pancakes.” She said suddenly. Sawyer laughed and started walking down then stairs. “Pancakes it is your highness.” He yelled back up the stairs. Kate laughed and shut the bedroom door. She quickly got changed and hurried towards the door before pausing at the top of the stairs. She went back to her room and got the pills that Juliet had given her. She swallowed one dry and sighed. She was going to start living again. She ran down the stairs and into the kitchen. Sawyer turned around from the stove.
“Good timing pancakes are just ready.” Kate sat down at the table and Sawyer dropped a pancake in front of her. He set some more on a plate for him and joined Kate at the table. “Kate?” Kate looked up at him. “I was wondering if you wanted to go out and see the horses.” Kate froze. It meant going outside. Was she ready? Suddenly she was so angry at him, still ruining her life. She smiled at Sawyer.
“I’d love to.” She said. Sawyer grinned and polished up the rest of his pancakes. Kate handed him her clean plate and he tossed them into the sink.
“I’ll clean it up later.” He said. He looked at Kate’s feet. “Come on. We gotta get you some shoes.” He went into the sitting room with Kate and opened the door to a closet Kate had never noticed before. He handed her a pair. “Here they should fit you.” Kate pulled on the boots. Sawyer threw a jacket at her. “It’s cold in the mornings.” He explained. Kate smiled. Sawyer stood up donned in his own boots and jackets. He held out his hand to Kate who nervously took it. “You ok?” He asked. He knew it was a big step for her going outside. She nodded.
“Yeah.” Sawyer squeezed her hand. He opened the door and looked back at Kate. She seemed okay. He pointed to the stables.
“That’s where we’re going kay?” Kate nodded. Sawyer squzzed her hand harder and walked down the stairs of the porch and into the yard. He glanced around him. Kate didn’t know it but he had a gun in his jacket, ready to whip out. Kate whimpered behind him. He turned. “Kate? If you wanna go back just say.” She shook her head. She grabbed his hand and put it over her shoulders pulling Sawyer close to her. Sawyer nearly fell over in shook but managed to keep walking towards the barn. Finally they reached it. Sawyer led Kate to a stall. A big brown horse stood there. Her tummy was as round as a barrel. Sawyer smiled. “She’s going to foal soon.” Kate smiled in delight.
“She’s beautiful.” The horse suddenly threw up her head and whinnied. Sawyer chuckled and reached for a bucket by the door.
“She is also very grumpy.” Sawyer filled the bucket with feed and opened the door. The horse trotted over and stuck her head in the bucket. Sawyer pushed her away. “Hey hey hey. Hold on. I got your food. Ya greedy bitch.” He went to set the bucket in the corner and just as he was bending down to put then bucket on the floor, the mare stuck out her nose and poked Sawyer in the but. Sawyer went sprawling and the mare happily walked past and began to devourer her breakfast. Sawyer stared at the mare in shook. Outside the door, Kate was laughing so hard she couldn’t breathe. Sawyer got up and walked out rubbing his bruised but and ego. “Glad you think its so funny freckles.” Kate managed to get her giggles under control.
“Sorry. But it was really funny!” Sawyer grinned good naturally. Kate wandered down the stalls. She peered into one of them and gasped. “Sawyer? Who’s this?” Sawyer looked up from getting food for the other horses and looked into the stall. S black horse laid facing away from them.
“That is starlight. Star for short” Kate turned, an eyebrow raised.
“Starlight? She’s black!” Sawyer whistled. The horse’s head swung round and Kate saw why she had gotten her name. Their way a spot of white right between the horses eye which look exactly like a star. Kate drew her breath in. “She’s beautiful.” Sawyer had an idea.
“You wanna take her for a ride?” Kate looked at him, smiling shyly.
“Really?’ Inside Sawyer was shocked and delighted at the steps she was taking.
“Sure. She needs to get out anyway. I’ll take Dapple.” He walked off. Kate turned back to Star. “He sure picks funny names for horses.” Sawyer came back with his arms full of tack.
“Open the door would you Kate?” Kate yanked back the latch and the door swung open. Sawyer dumped the tack in the corner and was just about to start when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“I can do it.” Kate said. “My dad used to have horses. “Sawyer smiled and handed her the reins.
“Call me if you need me.” He said and walked out of the stall. Kate bent down and placed the reins on stars head. The horse snuffled and tried to turn over to go back to sleep. Kate giggled.
“Come on, lazy bones.” She gently tugged on the bridle. Star stood up. Kate quickly put the saddle on her. She led her out of the stall just in time to she Sawyer coming out of one with a huge dappled stallion.
“Well howdy freckles. Nice job. Meet dapple by the way. He’s a bit frisky.”
“Come on lets go.” Kate had always loved horses and she was eager to get going.
“Alright alright. Jeez woman.” Sawyer turned and began to walk towards the field. He noticed Kate wasn’t following him. He turned around and walked back to a still Kate. He placed a hand on her shoulder. “Ya wanna ride in the ring?” Kate nodded.
“Thanks.” She whispered. Sawyer took her hand and the two of them walked into the huge indoor ring beside the stables. Sawyer set up jumps and soon he and Kate were running around chasing each other and jumping over the jumps. Kate couldn’t remember the last time she had had so much fun.

Juliet’s hands shook as she dialled Jack’s number. He picked up on the third ring.
“Hello?” He said. Juliet squeezed her eyes shut.
“Hey. Jack it’s me.”
“Oh hey Juliet. Where are you? I feel like I haven’t talked to you in ages!” He laughed. Juliet forced a chuckle.
“Yeah. I know. I miss you.”
“Well then.” Jack said, “Come to my place at 7:30. I’ll make dinner.” Juliet swallowed.
“That sounds great. I’ll see you then Jack .”
“Ok. Bye. Love you.” Jack said. She shivered.
“Love you to.” She answered and hung up. She let out a shaky breath and flipped opened her cell again. Sayid picked up immedialty.
“Well done Juliet.” He said as she told him of her and Jack’s dinner plans. “Don’t worry Juliet. He won’t do anything to you. I’ll be outside.”
“Thank you Sayid.” Juliet felt like crying.
“It’s no worry.” Sayid said gently. The phone went dead. Juliet sighed and stared out across the bay.

Sawyer and Kate walked back to the house tired but happy. Kate had shocked Sawyer at her excellent riding easily clearing the fences Sawyer had set up. Sawyer pushed open the door and let Kate go in. Kate ran a hand through her hair.
“I gotta take a shower!” She giggled. Sawyer mock glared at her.
“Now if you weren’t a lady I’d say me first.” Kate stuck her tongue out at him and ran up the stairs. Sawyer sighed and flopped down on the couch. He was extremely pleased at Kate’s progress even if she didn’t wasn’t to go outside on the house at least she had gone outside the house. He was also quite please that his idea about the horses worked out. Kate came down while he was still thinking her hair in tight wet curls. He quickly showered and came back downstairs. Kate was sitting on the couch, wrapped up in a blanket. “Hey.” Sawyer said. Kate turned around.
“I’m hungry.” She announced. Sawyer chuckled.
“Dinner coming right up your highness.” Sawyer quickly made some stew and after warming up some bread (it was a bitterly cold night) he brought it into the sitting room. He and Kate ate their dinner in front of the roaring fire Sawyer had made earlier. Kate placed her plate on the coffee table and yawned. Sawyer stood up and took her bowl. “You finished?” Kate nodded. Sawyer put the plates in the sink. “I’ll clean up in the morning.” He muttered.
He went back into the sitting room and sat beside Kate on the couch. “You have fun today?” He asked. Kate didn’t answer. He looked down. Kate had fallen asleep resting against him. “Damn. How am I going to get up?” Sawyer rested his head on the back of the couch. “I’ll let her rest for a little while longer.” And before he knew it he had fallen asleep with his arm curled around Kate.
