Fallen One”

Chapter 1:

The once blurred brown hair finally came into his distant focus as Shawn struggled to open his brown eyes wider. He shrunk back, with both apprehension and delusion, as he saw Diana with a syringe filled with a neon-green liquid. Its content, Shawn would later realize was the antidote. The cure? Question’s still swarmed around in his feverish head.

In acquiescence, he relaxed his painfully flexed muscles as he felt the needle being introduced into his body. However the through the throbbing of the poison’s affect on his system, he hardly noticed the chilled fluid begin to flow through his veins. It was only moments later that he noticed the vaccine that had been administered began to eat away at the poison. However, the scared young man was still left with one question

“W-Why me? Dia-, it should be” She watched him carefully as he began to wane and waver between consciousnesses. Desperately, he fought to keep his eyes open and fixed on Diana’s until she answered his question. His determination demanded her attention in spite of her efforts to keep him still and quiet. “K-Kyle or Maia, not m-me”

“Hush” She urged the weakened boy “Sleep… Shawn, its okay to sleep now” Diana could tell he was still exhausted as she removed the syringe from his IV. Taking a damp cloth to his head, she silently urged his spiking fever to break. Eventually, a fitful sleep overtook him, Diana sat by his side, knowing that he was the only hope left for the 4400.

Chapter 2:

The next moment that Shawn knew, two doctors began transferring his semi-conscious body from the gurney and onto his unsteady feet. From a distance he could see Diana kneeling by Maia’s bed. His attempt to take a step towards them, however failed, as soon as he did his legs collapsed, unable to adjust to the weight that was now being applied to them. Crumbling into the two doctor’s sturdy arms, he allowed much of his weight to burden them, shuffling his feet as he approached Maia’s bedside.

He laid his hand, shakily over her. As the girl seized with the power that was circulating through her, by standers watched in amazement at the gift the young man had been given. It was moments before he could feel the poison release its grip on her system. He fell to the floor in his weakened stature and with a splitting head ache. A small reminder of what affect his “gift” had on him.

However, for Shawn, Maia was only one in 4385. After hundreds of times, Tom, Diana and the two doctors carried him back to his bed, with a temperature that still impaired his mind and sent miserable chills down his body.

Chapter 3:

It wasn’t until the next morning that the infected were released from quarantine. Everyone except, Shawn, that was. He would nod groggily as his friends would say their goodbyes as Diana and Tom stayed by his bedside. Only Diana left to take Maia home. It had finally quieted down at around 12 O’clock, however, Shawn, in no shape to go home, had stayed behind with his uncle, a doctor, and a team of nurses.

However, much to Shawn’s misfortune, the silence had begun to play with his already impaired mind. On separate accounts he found himself asking why he was the only patient left there. However many of his questions were answered Tom spoke up from the foot of his bed, once Shawn had awoken from his deep sleep. He glanced at the monitors that his nephew had been attached to.

“Your vitals are looking a little better” he said clearing his throat. “The doctors are saying your looking good… Kid”

With that Shawn attempted to sit up and drink the water the nurses had given him. After quickly spilling it, he finally laid back and allowed himself to sip the cool liquid from the straw while Tom held the cup, as the boy looked up at his uncle hopelessly.

“You will be weak, for a while, at least” he soothed as he knelt down next to the ailing boy and paused and bit his bottom lip. He remember that expression, it was the same way he had told Shawn about Kyle’s accident.

“Shawn, you can’t do it anymore… you body’s immunity is too low. You cannot ever use your powers again.” He paused again “I am afraid of what your body will react, Shawn” He looked into the kids sad eyes “You understand?”

Shawn nodded as sleep overtook him. Tom wandered whether not he truly had understood his warning. Tom could only keep an eye on him and hope that Shawn wouldn’t be the next 4400 to die.

Chapter 4:

It was seven hours after that he was stable enough to be released to go home. Although he was alone, the silence of his living room was much less terrifying than that if quarantine. He had made his studio room couch into a makeshift bed and had just alleviated his migraine as he began to attempt to get the first real rest he had gotten in the last week, when he heard a knock at his door.

“Come in” he muttered weakly. To his surprise he saw a young man standing in the doorway. “Kyle!” The young man seemed to be shaken as he shifted his weight, but attempted to smile at his still weakened cousin

“I didn’t know if I would ever see you again” He said trying to capture the young man’s attention as he noticed his eyes darting and beaded sweat covering his trembling body. Kyle, had not one of the 4400, still Shawn wondered if maybe he was poisoned as well. He would learn later, the only thing that his cousin was plagued by was his own conscience.

“I had to say something, Shawn” He paused “I shot Jordan Collier” His eyes began to fill with tears as his friends began to fill with hate.

“You? You Killed Collier? No… You?” He screamed and pleaded.

“I’m sorry… I am so sorry” Kyle softly muttered as he turned his back towards the man lying on the couch, knowing that it was the last time he would see him for many years. However as he reached the doorway, to Kyle’s surprise his friend got up and embraced his shocked cousin. Then placing his trembling hand on his forehead, he allowed the energy to flow through Kyle’s veins as he felt himself weaken. He fell to the floor leaving Kyle stunned.

“Y-you’re free” He said with small gasps as Kyle attempted to help his cousin back onto the couch. Kyle stayed a while until the trembling body fell into a fitful sleep.

Chapter 5:

Kyle’s father Tom had been waiting for him at home. Kyle walked in to his stepmother and his father standing anxiously next to the door. Praying that their son would make a wise decision.

“Are you ready?” Tom finally asked his son as he laid his hand lightly on his shoulders in support.

“Yeah… but Dad… I saw Shawn… one last time” This realization brought tears to his father eyes. “I told him I shot Jordan Collier”

“You didn’t, Kyle?” Tom subconsciously pleaded with his son. “Kyle?”

“He needed to know, Dad” He chuckled in the midst of his trembling voice “Jordan Collier was the closest thing he had to a father… and I took that away from him… He needed closure… and… and” He paused as tears began to fill his frustrated eyes “and Dad that was the only thing I had left to offer him.” Tom stood up from the couch as he began to pace in the living room as he used the railing to stop himself.

“How much does he know?” His father asked as he bit his lip and shook his head in disbelief. “Kyle?”

“All of it” He paused as he smirked and shook his head “He knows more than I do, Dad!” This caught Tom’s attention as he stopped his pacing and pivoted to face his family’s faces.

“How would he know more than you?”

“The voice in my head is gone… Dad… Shawn was weak, but he freed me… I didn’t ask him to, but he did”

“Shawn… He used his gift? On you?” Tom was practically yelling

“To free me!” Kyle reiterated to his father. “I don’t understand? Dad? What is it?”

“Shawn’s body was weak after healing the 4400… he was never supposed to use his healing powers again… He promised” Tom began to pace once again panicking as he dialed the phone, become extremely agitated when there was no answer.

“What’s going to happen?” Kyle asked pryingly, waiting impatiently to hear his fathers reply… but nothing came.

Chapter 6:

It had seemed like an eternity before Tom, his wife, and Kyle pulled their compact car into Shawn’s driveway. Tom hadn’t said much in the car to either of them, and that was even what scared Kyle the most. It was something that he did say. On the treacherous ride there he began replaying his father last conversation with him

Tom: How much does he know?

Kyle: He knows more than I do… He freed me!

Tom: He used his powers…on you?

Kyle could only imagine that Shawn’s healing power was part of the unique and intricate equation that all the returnees had… like a bar code, branding them as an outsider both in the past as well as the horrid future.

When they had pulled into the driveway, to everyone’s surprise, the hurried man stopped before he opened the door and turned to look at his son.

“Kyle…. Stay here with her… I…” His father could see his son shaking his head furiously at that thought. He physically combated his way out of the car door. “Kyle!” He spoke softly as he knocked on the door, softly, and then gained intensity as the time went on. It was then that Kyle reached for the handle, grasping it; he turned it slowly to the right as the lock clicked open and they walked inside. The entrance hallway was longer that what Kyle had remembered. “Shawn?” “Shawn?”

What he saw next would haunt him daily… a body curled up in constant agony under the kitchen counter with only a crook face visible and covered with blood, groaning slightly amid uncontrolled screams of panic and anguish.

“Shawn” Kyle screamed as Tom took his cell phone and began dialing, then bent down to aid the trembling boy. “Shawn?” Kyle continued to talk to him as he was unwilling to uncurl and allow his family to examine all of his wounds.

“This is Agent Tom Baldwin… I need a Medic…. What do you mean I have to bring…” But Tom didn’t finish his sentence. He had already begun hauling Shawn up to his feet and began dragging him down the hallway and stairs and then into the car.

Chapter 7:

Kyle had climbed into the back seat after Tom had loaded Shawn. His head slammed against the back window as the car hit speed bumps. However, it was not long until he had gathered himself again into a ball as he rocked back and forth, crying and yelling in pain.

Kyle, unable to think about anything else other than his ailing cousin, simply sat in the clutching Shawn. “It’s going to be okay… Shawn! Shawn… Listen to me… okay… You’re going to be okay!” But soon became impatient as he screamed at Tom “Dad we need a doctor now… Where are we going… the hospital is back the other way…?” Everyone was startled by Shawn frightfully painful cry. “Dad… he is getting worse… he is not going to make it…”

Shawn’s convulsion had escalated and become more frequent as the time went on. His cry’s had become deafening and his eyes glassed over, appeared to show little life left in them.

“We are here…” To said as he pulled into the loading spot. “Hurry, help me get him inside.

“You took him back to quarantine?”

“They may be the only ones who can help him!” But he shook his head and rephrased “They are the only people who can help him, Kyle!”

Chapter 8:

It was only moments later that they had Shawn laid out on a gurney and began wheeling his through the placid hallways and into tiled room where the doctors and nursed blocked both Tom and Kyle from entrance.

“That’s my Nephew” Tom’s voice boomed… “I work for Home Sec” He said as he attempted to push his way through the line of nurses.

“We realize that sir… but you must wear this” They said as they handed him scrubs. “We have already made sure that you would be in there to supervise…. Dr. Cheiner has already begun” They all went back into the room and before the door even had closed Kyle began to beg his father to let him in.

“He is in there because of me, Dad! I want to be in there”

“Kyle, there is nothing you can… wait out here… I will come out and tell the information as I get it okay. His frantic son seemed to be assured by his father’s promise and had quieted down as Tom pushed through the door and into the sanitary room.

He approached the doctor quickly as they were attempting to put Shawn under the anesthesia.

“What’s going on?”

“The anesthesia is having no affect on his body whatsoever… We finally have him sedated enough to look him over… Heart Rate and Blood Pressure are all elevated…”

“What is this, Dr, what kind of virus is this?”

“This isn’t a virus Agent Baldwin…” The doctor paused as he looked at his chart. “As far as we can tell, Shawn’s body is fighting his power… dark has triumphed over the Light”

“What does that mean?” Tom asked as he shook his head, unable to read into what the doctor was trying to tell him.

“The good, Shawn’s ability to heal himself as well as the others… is now buried under his ability to take away human life force… Slowly, its eating away at him… soon they’re will be nothing we can do to stop it. “He paused “I am sorry, Agent Baldwin… without a telepathic or something of the sort to reach his conscious… His body won’t last much longer.”

“What could a telepathic do?”

“He could enter into Shawn’s mind… explain to him what we already know about his condition and then show him how to fight it mentally. We have to get Shawn to uncover his power.”

“I don’t know anyone who could do that… My son was conduit”

“No, Tom, I have already found one… she is in route now. She can be here within the hour.”

Chapter 9:

Tom glanced at the file he had been given as he read:

Ana T. Hawkins

1986-? (Age19)

Abducted ID Number: #4400

Location: Seattle, Washington

Distinguishing Abilities: Telepathists and Telekinesis

“What does the number 4400 mean?”

“As far as we can tell…She was last one abducted… and the only one who was physically harmed by her abductor.

“What do you mean?” Tom asked as he look in the door way and saw a teenage girl in a wheelchair as her parent wheeled her into the room.

“Agent Tom Baldwin, this is Ana Hawkins…” Tom began to greet her but her parents stopped him.

“She won’t hear you and she will not talk to you either” They said as they looked at the young boy on the table. “It’s not that she can’t… She likes the quiet… she likes to listen…”

“Please tell me something… anything” He knelt down at eye level with her.

To everyone’s surprise the young girl arose from her wheelchair and limped painfully over to where Shawn was lying as she placed her hand firmly on his perspiring forehead.

“Shawn” Her voice was hoarse from lack of use “I can see him on the beach… playing his guitar…” As she begins humming along with his music. “The wind is picking up… a hurricane maybe…It’s cold and he is afraid…” She paused as she opened her eyes again “But I am not too late.”

Chapter 10:

“Ana… are you sure you are up to this” her mother pleaded for an answer as the doctor place Ana on the gurney next to Shawn’s and placed the monitors on her forehead. He then repeated the same preparations on Shawn’s nearly lifeless body.

“You don’t have to do this?” Her parents insisted, however, Ana had already fallen back into her own silence. She lay on the table, concentrating fully on listening to Shawn’s voice.

“Alright, Ana” The doctor proceeded “Just concentrate on finding him… we will work on the details next time” The doctor reassured her as he injected the serum and he frail body jolted with energy as it surged though her and finally sent her into the oblivion.

She had expected to find herself flying through a tunnel of light, however, she only found herself sitting in nothing other than total darkness.

Had she gotten lost? How could she find Shawn in this darkness? Or the question she feared worse: Was this all that was left of him?

Chapter 11:

Ana had only sat in the blackness for moments before she heard the distant yet familiar voice. Immediately she rose to her feet and began following it, not knowing where she placed her feet. He she followed until she eventually reach a clearing. She was shocked to find the young man standing on the ledge of the cliff that led down deeper and deeper into the darkness.

Shawn! Shawn! NO!” She screamed trying to capture his attention, but to no avail. He screams seemed to echo, only to be heard by her ears.

Shawn? Shawn Farrell? Listen to me…” She finally realized that her tender voice was no longer working as she screamed “SHAWN FARREL, I know you can hear me… Now TURN AROUND, Now!” The young man seemed to take a deep breath as he listed one foot off of the ground and attempted to jump. However, Ana stepped closer.

Tom watched the monitor Shawn had been hooked up to as he saw his vitals spike and Dr. Cheiner come rushing towards him.

“What’s going on? What has happened to him” Tom asked as he was pushed out of the way…

“His heart rate is down… We are loosing him…” He looked at Tom and then at the monitor as Kyle walked in to the room.

Ana had no choice left but to call out his name one more time… however this time she heard a different voice in her head, but she spoke too slowly as he step off the ledge and began his descent into the black pit. However, within a few seconds, her firm grasp was the only thing keeping him form the darkness. As she urged him.

Shawn, its Kyle… hold on man… don’t let go…”

Chapter 12

“We’ve lost him” The doctor told the nurses as everyone rushed around him as Tom and Kyle both grip Shawn’s hand. Tom could here his son, Kyle Muttering

“Shawn, its Kyle… hold on man… don’t let go… just hold on”

It was only moments later that Shawn grabbed a hold of a rock and with the help of his new friends climbed back on the ledge.

Cradling his shaken body she stroked his hair and spoke softly “Shawn Farrell, I’m Ana Hawkins”

Tom, Kyle and the doctor both stood in astonishment as the vitals on the monitor began to rise for no scientific reason. The doctor then turned to Tom and Kyle.

“She found him”
