A/N: I was inspired, obviously, by “The Field Where I Died.” And “Monday.” Except, in this version of that infamous bank scene, the day does not begin again. And I know this undermines the romantic Sarah Cavanaugh and Sullivan Biddle relationship from TFWID, but I think we can all agree that Mulder and Melissa were never “meant to be” in this life. For those of you who aren't rabid X-Philes, all you need to know is that this is basically Mulder's pledge to be with Scully always, in every life. (I know this is really short, but... maybe look for a follow-up?)
The Bank Where I Died
Her tears fell in streams, cascading over his pale cheeks and onto the cold stone floor beneath him. With every passing second, his breath grew more rapid, his heart beating erratically. He broke into a cold sweat, his eyes glossy and fixed on her own. And she knew. This time, this was it.
Of all of the things they had been through, of all the times she had never believed, why now? Of all the almosts and the not quites, why here, in this Twilight Zone of a bank when nearly every second of their career was spent chasing the most dangerous men in the country and stepping on governmental toes?
She gently touched his cheek, praying for a miracle. Praying for some sort of medical attention in the next thirty seconds.
But it would not come.
He spoke his last words through the blood in his lungs and the pain written across his face. Her tears could not be willed away, despite herself. She didn’t want his last image to be of her, crying. Scully forced a smile through the tears that continued to fall on his cheek, into his hair. “Mulder.”
“Scully.” He began to aspirate, blood spraying her clothes. His eyes filled with tears, and began to pour over, mixing with Scully’s and the blood on the floor. This mess she couldn’t fix. “I will meet you,” he managed to whisper.
She began to sob loudly, with absolute abandon, all hope of composure lost. How many times had she lived through this moment?
This cannot be happening. This... we... cannot end this way.
“I will meet you,” he repeated, and as his last breath escaped him, he spoke the words that she would never in her life, present and future, forget. “In the field.”
