Chapter One: Death do us part

The sound of gun fire filled the air along with the stench of burning werewolf flesh and fur. Nora ran barefoot on the damp dirt floor, trying to escape the terror. She wore only a nightgown and could feel the night’s frozen air crawl up her legs and travel through her body. The hair on the back of her neck was straight up and goose bumps covered her arms. Her long red hair flew behind her as she ran. She heard screams of her dieing family around her; her head hurt and she wished that she would open her eyes and it would all be gone, and life would be back to normal and no one would know her and her family’s secret.

She saw a familiar body laying on the pavement next to her home. It was curled into a ball in what would seem to be a comfortable position, but there was something uneasy about it all. One of her wrists was bent back a way that seemed unbearably uncomfortable. The figure was that of her mother and when realization hit, Nora heard herself gasp and felt her knees go weak. The next thing she new she was on the ground crawling to her mother’s side and turning over the corpse. Her face was pale and smeared with blood and dirt; her eyes were open slightly and she was obviously dead.

Nora felt tears burn her face as she held her mother close. She saw her aunt Lilia running by, but she stopped when she realized who Nora was holding. “Vivian!” she screamed and Nora heard a bang. Lilia’s body hit the road with such force she was sure it would leave a dent. Blood covered her back where the silver bullet had lodged. Nora screamed in terror and closed her eyes. Please make it stop! Make it stop, make it stop! She thought to herself over and over.

She felt a firm hand on her shoulder and she turned quickly to look into the face of her father, Gabriel. There were tears in his eyes and he was holding his side. He had been shot too. Before her eyes, Nora’s whole pack were being killed along with her parents. Her head pounded harder and she felt about to faint when her father spoke.

“She’s…she’s gone Nora.” He swallowed hard to push back the tears and the pain. “You can still make it Nora, get out of here!” He shook her shoulder with his good hand as if to wake her from a vicious sleep. “Nora listen! You must go!” He pushed her to her feet and she held on for support, not able to find balance. Her father flinched when she grabbed his shoulder on the side he was shot and she quickly let go.

“No!…I can’t…your hurt…where do I go? What do I…”

“Nora! Go! I won’t tell you again, get out and stay away! You must live!” Gabriel fell to his knees as if these last words had torn his strength away. He tried to get back up but was obviously too weak. He took a deep breath. “GO!” he yelled with such force that Nora jumped and started to run away. She turned back to see her father hit the ground. She turned ahead not wanting to see another family member die.

Nora ran and as she did she felt her limbs changing. Her nose grew along with her teeth.

She felt fur cover her as her elbows popped and her arms grew longer and her legs shorter. When she had completed the transformation she ripped off her torn nightgown and got down on all fours to run with more speed. She could still here the gunfire but it was faint as she ran on. How did I get out of there without getting shot? she thought to herself.

Tears still fell from her eyes uncontrollably and her head throbbed with every bound forward, but she had to do what her dead father had instructed, she knew she must survive. She only hoped she would not be spotted by the hunters. How had this happen to her family, to her? It made no sense, no one would be so careless. How had they known? How had they surprised them to the point that they didn’t have a fighting chance? These thoughts filled Nora’s head as she ran on to an unknown future.

Nora’s feet ached as she regained her human form in a forest she didn’t recognize. She realized she had no clothes to change into but didn’t see any signs of life other than the occasional squirrel or rabbit. She walked a while in hopes to find a stream. She was filthy and dehydrated. The moon was high in the sky, a waxing crescent. Nora took a moment to admire its beauty before continuing her journey.

The last thing Nora expected to hear was laughter but suddenly that was all that filled the air. She quickly hid behind a bush, thinking she was the cause of their humor. She looked around to see that know one was there but the laughter didn’t cease. She followed it until she could tell it was two people, a boy and girl. She swiftly moved behind a tree not making a sound and peaked to the other side.

There was a girl and a boy, as she had predicted, in the middle of a clearing. They seemed to be about two years younger than her, fifteen or so. They were sitting on a blanket holding hands. Midnight walk…perfect she thought. What are the odds! Again Nora felt the change come, much quicker than when she was running from her home. The image of her mother’s lifeless body flashed in her head as she transformed into a wolf. She felt a tear but contained herself.

Three, two, one, Nora jumped out from behind the tree and growled as deep and as mean as she could. She heard the two scream as their expressions turned from lust to fear. The boy jumped to his feet taking her with him. They stood a moment. Nora took a step forward and they ran for the woods. She waited till she was sure they had left and changed back for what she hoped to be the last time tonight. She grabbed the blanket they had been sitting on and wrapped it around herself. Then she followed where they had headed, hoping it would bring her to a safe and warm place.
