EXTRA TWO-
Applesauce and Much More
“Here, babe,” he whispered hoarsely. “Open up now!” His voice has grown old. Old like sandpaper. Rough to the touch, to the ear, but it softened and smoothed her.
“Jacob. Really. I can feed myself,” she chastised her husband. The woman sat up in her plastic chair, her dark, sweet prune-like hands clasped her spoon.
“Ha! Look at your hand wiggle. Clearly you need my help. Just ask me any time now.” His eyes smothered beneath his elegantly arching, teasing eyebrows. Cupped between eyelids, lashes and warmth, sat his eyes, always intently watching her, holding her, even if not physically.
“Love! It is not. Your stare is making me nervous. That’s why. I don’t want my applesauce anymore. Thanks so much.” Melanie pouted, setting down her spoon, annoyed.
“Why won’t you just admit you can’t feed yourself and let me feed you? I’d enjoy that. So would you,” Jacob said, flipping his hair in a circular motion. They fell back promptly, covering his broad forehead, a forehead free of stress. Over the years, his hair had commuted from the warm, earth, clunky brown she loved so to the shine of golden yellow; light, free, wispy like age but still just as warm.
“I’m stubborn,” she announced grandly. “Like you don’t know.” He always made her feel wonderfully nervous. Melanie twisted her wedding ring, twisting her pounding heart, twisting her love for him tighter and tighter.
“Hmph. I still say you’ll give in,” he grumbled. Jacob stretched out for her and pulled her to him, closing up the undesirable space, refueling his body with her being. She dissolved in his arms, strong arms, thin but strong arms; she thawed in her secluded paradise, knowing she was the only woman ever to feel the real love he’s always been able to radiate. “Please…”
“I love you,” Melanie murmured, giving in.
“Ahhhh, thought so,” he grinned, taking the spoon from her. Jacob scooped her applesauce neatly, a mountain of sweetness, embellished with adoration from his eyes, his unspoken fidelity, and his whole plump heart, bursting with affection, on the side.
She loved every mouthful.
