A/N: This is a short drabble about Yuki-kun, in the days before Tohru. Whoo...! No pairings whatsoever. (I don't agree with YukiTohru; I'm a YukiMachi and KyoTohru fan myself.) Anyway, I did this on a whim, so don't gush about it's crappy length or some other schtuff. It was MEANT to be SHORT.
Here we go!
By Chance
There was no one in his life that stood out as important.
His mother, father, brother--his distant family, even his god. None of them were dear to him, none of them did he cherish. He had no one he held close to his heart, no one he could smile with everyday and laugh with at nothing in particular and talk to, even when he had nothing to say. He wished he did, subconsciously; but what his conscious self told the rest of him was that no one would need him. No one would want him. He had no personality, no distinguishing traits, beyond his girlish beauty.
He had no outstanding characters that set him apart; in his refusal to acknowledge his individuality, he was quite the individual--not that he saw it in himself. The girls always swooned over him, ever since he enrolled in high school, and even before then. He had no romantic interest in them, nor could he let himself get close. He was cursed, after all, and it wouldn't do for word of that to get out.
Their memories would have to be erased, and he just didn't want to go through that again.
Life for him would remain the same; although he'd finally escaped the main house, and his lifestyle was a bit less demanding, he knew that there would always be that shadow over him, of the head of the family. There was no escaping Akito, no matter how hard one might try. He'd been born for Akito; anything less than perfect obedience was out of the question--and that was why he'd had to get out. Out of those walls; Shigure had taken him in. He didn't know why, but didn't question.
He was sure his life would never change. Destiny had overlooked him.
"Honda-san!" He blinked at the call, and glanced up as everyone else had. A cute brunette by the window stood, looking understandably confused. The man at the door beckoned, and she hurried over. He said something in low tones; the class couldn't make out what. But whatever he said must have been bad--it showed on the girl's face. They both rushed out of the class; there was movement behind him and Yuki turned around. Her two friends followed at once, paying no mind to the teacher's halfhearted attempts to stop them.
The whispers began as he'd expected, not thirty seconds after Honda-san had gone. He glanced back down at his paper, unconcerned. It had nothing to do with him.
He had no idea that that moment--that small pocket in time--was what would inevitably change his life forever. He'd no way of knowing that Tohru was being taken to the hospital where her mother would die. No way of knowing that Tohru would live on her own, in the forest, not far from his house--no way of knowing he'd stumble upon her, take her in.
He had no way of knowing that she would alter his existence. So for the moment, it was understable he be disinterested...
After all, it was none of his concern.
