Chapter One

Jade Ishimino was 23 years old with an affinity for fighting and video games. She had gone to school until she dropped out in grade four to pursue a fighting career which was the only source for her and her mother. She was a street brawler with martial arts and luck and hadn't lost a fight since her fight carrier turned professional. That never made her cocky or less charming. She never allowed herself an ego so that in the event of a loss, it wouldn't hurt to fall from her pedestal. She trained everyday except Saturday. She concentrated on speed, flexibility, precision, and endurance. She had muscles, for strength certainly was important and made her very well toned, but she wouldn't allow herself to be a jacked up muscle freak who was so weighed down that it was a blunder not an accent to be so large.

She tended to be laid back but she had a kind of simple code that she pretty much followed. The rules were 1) Loyalty to an ally, 2) Even fight, 3) Help if needed. If she made a pact with someone, she wouldn't be the one to fuck it up. An even fight meant that if someone fights with fist so do you, if they bring out a weapon so do you, if they use dirty tricks than so do you, etc. Helping when needed was always important to her because she felt good doing the right thing.

She had some quirks though. despite her being a famous, professional fighter, she immensely enjoyed a good street brawl. Reminded her of her childhood and teen years. She loved remembering her only pals from her childhood years. She very rarely ever saw them during teen hood, only receiving the scarce letters from Shuichi Minimino every now and again. He wrote telling her that Yusuke was soon to marry Keiko after they spent a year planning and that Kuwabara was now, officially dating Yukina (though Jade hadn't seen so much as a picture of this mystery girl and only had clues to her through the letters from the red head). These guys were pals from childhood and when they grew into being teens, and they all met each other some how, she ended barely seeing them.

It did bother her a little that she was left alone, but she sucked it up and settled for writing Shuichi. At least he made some effort to stay in touch. He'd even sent a bunch of pictures. She had pictures of people she didn't know but Shuichi was so good at describing them that she felt like she knew them. On top of that, she knew that if she ever really needed them, they would be there for her. After all, she was the only girl that Yusuke and Kuwabara would hit. According to one of Shuichi's letters, the merry band of misfits all inherited this temple from a woman named Genki (even though she wasn't dead yet, they still often went there) and it was some kind of safe haven. He'd given her directions in case she ever needed help.

She was now at the steps of the temple and began the climb up. Her injured leg did make slow work of it and it took at least 15 minutes before she was at the top. The sun had just gone down and the air was cool and clear. It felt nice against her sweating skin. She heard voices inside, and with her sensitive hearing, picked out the voices of her pals (which hadn't really changed). With a relaxed smirk, she began hobbling over to the building. She heard them suddenly stop their chit-chat and she could practically tasted the tension as she got closer.

Without warning the door slid open and there stood Yusuke, Kuwabara, Shuichi, and some really short guy in black who she recognized from a photo and couldn't remember his name, and an even smaller, old woman.

“Who're you?” Yusuke asked, with his usual bite of attitude and suspicion. Jade moved more into the light and said,

“I know it's been awhile but come on.” A smirk let on the playfulness that she intended.

“Huh...Ishimino! What the...where the hell did you come from?” Yusuke asked completely shocked to see her standing there.

“From the stairs genius and do you think we could have this conversation after I've stopped bleeding.”

The group all then noticed that she was gripping her left leg up on the thigh and there was a lot of blood.

“What the heck happened to you?” Kuwabara asked as he and her other two pals went to her.

“Got attacked. Some jackass with claws. Guess he must've sensed me.” Jade said with a bitter laugh.

“Could you elaborate?” Kurama (Shuichi) asked as he draped her right arm over his shoulder so he could help her walk into the house.

“Well...” She stopped to hiss as her leg was forced to move again and sent a particularly nasty shock of pain through her leg. “I am a half demon and this guy must've figured it out. He wanted to fuck me, thinking that I would be defenseless and so I beat the shit out of him.”

Normally that kind of language would've shocked the guys considering it was coming from a girl, but Ishimino was an exception.

“Is he dead?” Kurama asked.

“Nope. Just really fucked up. Probably crying over the black eye and bloody nose he's now sporting.” Jade laughed a bit. This was the sixth attack she had to deal within two weeks. Why were there suddenly more demons popping into human world? She knew that there was a barrier between worlds (she didn't know about the treaty) and so she was a bit confused. Sure, as a half breed, she constantly was a target for demons that slipped through but now it was getting ridiculous. (A/N She is not the same type of half breed that Yusuke is and it will be explained).

“Get her inside. Hiei...perhaps you can find this demon that attacked her?” Genki looked at Hiei who had no choice. He was on patrol and part of his duties were to find demons who were breaking the treaty by causing problems in the human world.

“Hn. What did it look like and where was the attack?” Hiei spoke to her as she was just getting up the step into the temple.

“Ugly dude. He was about six feet tall, purple skinned, fangs, claws, green tunic. It happened on the road just outside of the trees.”

“Hn. If it is as injured as you claim it is than it should still be there.” With that, Hiei was gone in a flash. He truly was angry. This demon was making him work on his day off.

They got her inside and the girls all looked up in curiosity.

“Whose this?” Botan asked.

“Old friend and she needs to be healed.” Kuwabara said as Kurama and Yusuke helped her sit down.

“Certainly.” Botan and Yukina went over to the girl and saw that her injury was bleeding pretty bad. However, her injury was in a compromising place, considering they were surrounded by men. It was high on her thigh of the left leg. Botan was hesitant.

“Well...what's wrong?” Jade asked with a tilt of an eyebrow.

“It's just that the injury is in a bit...” Botan started and Jade got the gist and surprised the blue haired chick. She reached her hands into the tear in her jeans where the injury was and ripped. Her whole leg was left out in the opening and even some of her underwear was exposed to anyone who wished to see.

“Look...it's a serious injury and I don't give a damn. I don't have the strictest of feminine modesty codes.” Jade's lips turned into a joking smirk and Botan relaxed a bit.

“Alright. I'll go get the bandages and antiseptic.”

“Peachy.” Jade said with false joy. She hated that stinging stuff that they always wanted to put on every little scratch.

“So...when did you find out you were a half demon?” Yusuke asked, leaning against the door frame.

“Since birth. Ever wonder why I always wore a bandanna or hat, even when it was like a thousand degrees? It was to hide my ears. I'm surprised that you never noticed. I thought I was obvious. I could sense all of you guys' powers from when I first met you. They're a hell of a lot stronger now. Stronger then me. Kinda sad really considering that I used to be able to beat all of you up. But hey...I also covered my ears to keep all those demons at bay. If they even suspected I was a half breed, I'd be killed without hesitation.” Jade laughed.

“Wait. This doesn't make sense. I'm supposed to be a half breed and everyone fears me for it. Yet people give you shit about it?” Yusuke asked.

“It's because she is a different type of half breed than you are Yusuke.” Genki spoke up.

“What's that supposed to mean?” Kuwabara asked. He was just as lost as Yusuke was.

“Just like there is a wide variety of demons and humans, half breeds come in many shapes and sizes. Yusuke's is the most rare of them all. The most common is what Jade is.” Kurama explained.

“I really should start charging money every time you're vague.” Yusuke said.

“Basically idiot...unlike your blood which will travel generations to find the strongest host to serve it, I am a direct decedent. I am the daughter of a demon and human. Any children that I would have would all have human and demon traits in them. Get it? The blood goes directly into the next generation instead of skipping.”

“Ok...but that still doesn't explain why everyone would want to kill you.” Yusuke was now sitting cross legged on the floor next to her as Botan used that damned ointment on her.

“In demon word, half breeds like her are considered dirt. They are only good for slaves or whores. The reason is that they are considered unnatural. Humans and demons are not suppose to mix and so by that logic the children of such pairings are to be despised.” Hiei's voice came from the door way.

“You shouldn't sneak up on people like that shrimp!” Kuwabara said, a bit agitated that Hiei had managed to once again startle him by sneaking up on him. Hiei ignored him.

“Well that really sucks.” Yusuke said, finding a new sympathy for his old pal.

“Yeah...it's ok though. I've managed to live this long right? My only problem is that...why are there even more demons. They are even stronger to boot. Getting harder to breathe.” Jade said as Botan finished. “Thanks.”

“No problem. It is still pretty bad so you should take it easy for awhile.”

“Yeah...tell that to the demons who want me for lunch and our bill collectors.” Jade still smirked, yet that bitterness was still present.

“To answer your question, the barrier between human and demon world has been removed.” Kurama explained. Before he could tell her about the treaty she reacted.

“WHAT! That's so fucking stupid! It was hard enough to keep the son of bitches in line when it was only a handful. Now a bunch of stronger ones can come over here when ever the feel like it! That's bullshit!”

“Calm down you dimwit. There's a treaty stating that humans are to be protected and demons punished should they cause harm.” Genki cut in.

“What about the half breeds who have found refuge here in the human world? There is nothing to protect us!” Jade retaliated and everyone went blank.

“We didn't think about it at the time.” Yusuke said slowly.

“Che...of course not. No one ever remembers my kind. Now the demons have a great loop hole so they can get their damn hands on us.”

“I don't see why you panic woman. With guards like me, you won't even have to concern yourself too much about being attacked.” Hiei said.

“Oh yes...we can all see what great guards you all have. Today is proof of that.” Jade practically growled. Hiei gave her a vicious glare at her sarcasm and she glared back. She wasn't liking this guy. Hiei...she thought that was his name. She already could tell that they were going to have their issues.

“Now now, don't start fighting.” Kurama the voice of reason stepped in, preventing a full scale fight which he knew would ensue if the two were not interrupted.

“Fine.” Jade crossed her arms and Hiei simply gave a grunt before turning his attention from the woman and leaning against the door frame.

“By the way Hiei...what happened to that demon. Did you find him?” Yusuke asked.

“Hn. He was pathetically weak.” Hiei said, “I only had to hit him once before he died.”

Jade could hear the implied insult in Hiei's words are replied, “He snuck up on me jackass. I still kicked his ass.”

“Yet you didn't have the guts to finish him off.” Hiei shot back smoothly.

“Not everyone kills for kicks.” Jade growled.

“You're just not strong enough to do it.”

“Having strength doesn't mean you have to kill to prove it. Besides, the bastard would suffer more if he had to live with the wounds I inflicted on him.” Jade said with a tone that said she was through with this conversation and turned her attention to everyone else.

“So...who are these charming young ladies?” Jade asked looking at the girls.

“I'm Keiko.”

“Ah...Yusuke's girl. You're much prettier in person I must say.” Jade said.

“Thank you.” Keiko said with a smile.

“I'm Botan.” Botan took her hand and shook.

“Nice to meet you. Nice patch work. Must do wonders for stitches.”

“Why...thank you. Aren't you charming.” Botan practically beamed.

“I am Yukina. It is a pleasure to meet you.” She gave a slight bow of the head.

“I assure you the pleasure is mine Yukina.” Jade had a glimmer in her eye.

“I'm Shizuru, Kuwabara's older sister. I don't remember ever seeing you before.”

“I often played with the guys during class cuts and stuff like that. So I never met you. I'm glad I have now.”

“Huh...thanks.” Shizuru lit a cigarette and inhaled the poisonous fumes.

She's so charming that I may just throw up.” Hiei sent to Kurama telepathically.

Yes. She was always charming, especially to non-fighters.”

“Well it is clear that you are in no shape to go home tonight so you shall spend the night here.” Genki declared.

“Alright. I just need to call my mom. Not that she'd truly care about me but she needs to know whether or not I won the money yesterday or not.” Jade smirked.

“You can use my cell phone.” Keiko offered her phone to Jade who bid her thank you and called her mom to let her know that the money was safe. Once that was taken care of, she and the guys all spent about 3 hours catching up and then going to bed. Jade had the feeling as she snuggled under the blanket on her mat that there was going to be more in store for her. She couldn't wait.

Author's Note: Wow...I wrote this at like1 am. I think this is one of the longest chapters of any story I've done...huh. Anyways...please review.
