Drabble #1
Title: Taking the Leap
Summary: Max and Logan have another fight, leaving Max to wonder about her feelings for Alec
Rating: PG-16
Genre: Romance
Max stood at the space needle, hair gently blowing in the breeze in the late October night. The air was getting chillier, letting her know winter was on its way. She hated the winter, snowy slush freezing her toes and biting wind attacking her cheeks. Winter was also when she made the escape… When so many fell through the ice… She’d been lucky: however, she wasn’t feeling so lucky now.
She had had another fight with Logan about Alec. Another fight that had him begging her to come back to him, telling her that Alec wasn’t good enough for her and before she could brush a comment like that off but now… Now, not so much.
FLASH
Alec held the small baby in his arms, a smile on his face while he looked down at the little girl. A small hand came to his cheek and he smiled wider, looking up at Max when finally taking in her presence.
“Hey Maxie…”
“Alec…”
“Wanna hold her?”
END FLASH
Seeing that side of him, that nurturing side had taken her breath away. Of course she’d come in to hold the little girl as well, not bothering to tell Alec to give her some space as he hovered over her shoulder while she held the little bundle. It was then that a sort of YEARNING came over her… Like she wanted to be the mother of that child and she wanted Alec to…
Of course that thought had made her quickly hand the child back with an excuse that she had work to do. Alec had given her a curious glance, then shrugged while returning his attention to the baby, ignoring her on the way out.
He’s changed in this past year. Grown. Others were telling her that he was the leader that he was back at Manticore. Slightly demanding, but also caring of his people. Max hadn’t known him in those walls long enough to get that feeling of him. All she remembered was the cocky swagger and the insults. Of course, at the time, he had hated her along with all the others who knew of the ‘09ers.
Flash
“That night… When you escaped…” Max stilled, hands lowering the papers she was looking over to meet his eyes. “They came to our rooms and pulled us out of bed. We had no idea what we did wrong. Some were dragged away, never to be seen again while others, like me, were thrown into Psy Ops for months.”
“Why’re you telling me this?” she asked, her gaze meeting his haunted eyes: hands shaking.
“They tortured us, took away what little amount of innocence we had left…”
“Alec…”
“Just remember that. Because that’s how they see you, know you. They don’t see what I see. They see a traitor.” He put his feet on the ground, off of the table he’d been resting them on, then stood tall, tossing the papers he’d been reading onto her desk. “In time, they’ll see what I see.”
END FLASH
She turned from her perch on the needle, her determined brown eyes sweeping over the darkness one last time before she entered the entryway. It took her no time at all to climb down the steps and make it to her Ninja. She started it up quickly and was soon moving along the streets, eyes watching out for the hovercrafts.
Taking a left turn she stilled at a checkpoint and made sure not to have any eye contact with the police. They were the graveyard shift and didn’t really pay much mind to REALLY look the pass or her over. They just waved her through and she was on her way back to Terminal City.
It was only a few minutes before she was going through the hidden entrance. She parked her bike then walked up the ramp that led to HQ. Entering she saw those that didn’t sleep much tinkering away on computers, others who didn’t have work to do passed the time with a game of cards.
“Hey Max,” greeted Dalton, who also had a little shark DNA in his cocktail. “Alec was looking for you earlier.”
“Oh?”
“Said he needed to tell you something.” Dalton nodded to someone behind her. “Gotta go.”
“Later.” Max turned to watch the blond X-5 walk to a female anomaly with cat like eyes and fiery orange hair. He sat beside her and pulled what looked like a handheld game system out of his pocket to hand to her. Max smiled, she liked Dalton, and she held high hopes for him in the future command of Terminal City. “Alec…”
She turned away, giving quick smiles to those that looked her way and headed to the living quarters of the city. Some apartment buildings were put to use as well as small little homes that would house families. Alec’s place was near HQ so it didn’t take her long to enter the shambled apartment.
Flash
“Its… homey,” he said, studying the building that’d seen better days.
“We’ll fix it up,” she said.
“With what? Magic wands? We need cash, Max. Supplies.”
“And we’ll get it.” She walked into the abandoned building, stepping lightly while coming to the stairs. She looked down when she heard the creaking of wood and took a step back. She felt the floor falling under her feet and gave a startled gasp, ready to leap out of the way but before she could a hand gripped her upper arm and pulled her against a strong body. She looked up at him while he looked down at the now large hole in the floor. He then looked down at her, a smirk on his face. “Like I said, home sweet home.”
END FLASH
She walked over the now fixed floor, the heels of her boots thunking softly against the wood. She came upon a flight of stairs and walked up them with grace, her steps light until she came to his door. She listened and when not hearing any movements she opened the door. It squeaked slightly, and he probably heard that so she closed the door behind her then walked to the small room in the back where she knew he’d be. She stopped in the doorway and looked into his recently opened eyes.
“Hey.”
“Hi…” She bit her bottom lip. “You were looking for me?”
“Yeah like…” He turned to the battery-operated clock. “Four hours ago.”
“Sorry.”
“Yeah, no, s’ok…” He slipped out of bed, wearing only boxer briefs but that didn’t bother her anymore: too many times has she come for his help and he’d be in nothing but a towel. “Lemmie get some pants on and we’ll talk.”
She nodded, moving to the room while sitting on the white leather sofa that’d been at his last apartment.
FLASH
“It won’t FIT!”
“Oh yes it will,” he said, twisting the sofa around a bit more. “Now push!”
Max was so pissed. Man Alec was stubborn! So she shoved until the couch pushed through the doorway, her shove so mighty that he stumbled back and the couch landed on his chest just as he fell to the floor.
“Alec!”
“Agh!” He pushed the sofa up, wincing while he slid from under it. He was rubbing his chest and she squatted down to his level. “Ow!”
“You ok?”
“Yeah.” Then he smiled, looking at the sofa. “I told ya it would fit!”
“Psh.” She gave him a playful smack upside the head. “Dork.”
END FLASH
“So what’s up?” she asked, placing her feet up on the edge of the small coffee table.
“It was nothing, just lists of duties for the week that I completed. It was nothing that couldn’t wait until morning… So, where were you?”
“I..”
FLASH
“I’m tired of this, Max,” he sighed, looking down at his feet.
“Logan…”
“I can see the way you look at him now.”
“No.”
“Let’s be rational here… I know you have feelings for him and the cure…”
“We can still find it,” she said, wanting to reach out to him, but not being able to.
“How can you love him more than you love me?” he asked sadly, looking at her through his glasses.
“What? I don’t!”
“You do! C’mon Max, admit it!”
“Logan!”
“Then come away with me, somewhere other than here. To Europe where we can find other doctors. Come with ME and leave HIM behind.”
“I…” She looked down, memories of her and Alec flooding her head. “I can’t… I have to take care of them all…”
“By which you mean Alec.”
“No! Not just Alec, Logan! I have a lot on my plate right now and…”
“Max… You’ve made you decision.” His eyes hardened. “Just don’t come to me when that worthless asshole cheats on you, makes you miserable.”
“He wouldn’t.” Max’s spine stiffened. Only SHE could insult Alec that way, no one else… “Look, we’ll talk more tomorrow, give you time to cool off.”
“No, no I think we’ve talked enough…” Logan turned his back on her. “Goodbye Max, I hope… I hope he keeps you happy.”
END FLASH
“You, we fought about you.” Surprised registered on his face as he settled in against her. She stayed stiff for a moment before she turned to him. “He asked me to go to Europe.”
She watched his eyes; saw the slight fear and panic. Then anger before the mask was back in place. Was he starting to have the same feelings for her like she did him? Was it possible?
“So… When will you be taking off?”
“Never.” At his surprised look she continued on. “I told him I wanted to stay.”
“Why?” he asked, looking puzzled. “You love the guy, right?”
“I loved him, I did… Now… I kinda like someone else.”
“Oh.” Hurt, now he was hurt and she saw right through his mask now. “I see… Who?”
“Someone I’ve been fighting to not like for well over two years… Someone that’s become a great friend and has been my rock for so long that I’ve been blind until now…”
A pause, then.
“Joshua?!”
“No you moron!” she yelled, smacking him on the shoulder. “Argh, forget it!”
“Max!” He gripped her by the arm and pulled her down, face confused as she adverted his gaze. He leaned closer, trying to catch her attention. “Who is it?”
“It’s you,” she said softly. “I know, I know. Big surprise huh?”
“Uh…yeah.”
He wasn’t saying anything, just holding onto her arm with that dazed look on his face and CRAP what had she done? She was growing worried now. He didn’t like her that way, he couldn’t! So she started to pull away, standing to her feet.
“I gotta go.”
“Max!”
He pulled her back down, this time on his lap and before she could utter a curse he had his lips on hers and whatever she’d been about to yell was long forgotten as her hands came up to cup his stubble covered cheeks. Man she loved that he couldn’t shave as often anymore. She loved that his hair was so soft and as she pulled away she loved how his eyes could darken like that just because of her.
“Ok… So…” He seemed a little nervous so she soothed him by brushing her fingertips over his barcode. “O-Ok maybe that isn’t the best thing for you to do right now.”
“Why?” she asked softly, still caressing him.
“Cause I’m about two seconds away from jumping you.”
She paused in her ministrations and looked deeply into his eyes. She sat back slightly and smiled as he bit his bottom lip. She pretty much was straddling him now and she could FEEL how much he wanted her. So, she brought her fingers to her leather jacket and pulled it away, followed quickly with the simple black t-shirt she’d been wearing. She smiled when his eyes widened, taking in her breasts that were covered in the simple black, satin bra.
“Jump away.”
