Whispers In the Dark
“Despite the lies that you’re making
Your love is mine for the taking.
My love is just waiting
To turn your tears to roses.”
Kakashi Pov:
According to my internal clock, it was about three when the whispers began. I pried one eye open to see nothing, absolutely nothing in the void. That is, until I heard a familiar voice.
“’Kashi?” Sakura asked in a terrified voice. I focused in on her tousled head, my eyes quickly adjusting to the dark. She was curled up into a ball, her emerald eyes staring at me in horror. The whispers kept getting louder in my head. They sounded desolate, stricken, even appalled.
“What’s wrong, Sakura?” I asked her calmly, standing up – somewhat shakily, I might add – and walked over to her. She shivered, although she was wrapped in two thick comforters. I sat down next to her, careful to avoid Naruto and Sasuke, who were situated on either side of her like the loving teammates they were.
“I haven’t spent a night here in five years,” she whispered. I could barely hear her over the whispers that were slowly escalating into screams. The boys were stirring, and I had a hunch that Itachi was faking unconsciousness.
“Why not?” I asked her soothingly, slowly wrapping an arm around her. She flinched slightly but leaned into my grip.
“’Kashi, I’m cursed,” Sakura cried out as the wailing climaxed. Jumping out of my grasp, she ran out of the room. The screaming ceased immediately. I scrambled to my feet, quick as a ninja, as did the other three, Itachi and Sasuke alert and Naruto sleepily. We
ran down the hall that Sakura had run down.
The faster we ran, the brighter things got. It seemed that the Haruno mansion, which’d been in ruins for years, was rebuilding itself. We finally came to a halt outside of a bathroom with water running in it. Without thinking, because as a ninja, we were trained to act and not think, I threw the door open. There stood a sight that shocked me into a stupor.
Sakura wasn’t standing there. Oh no. Instead, there was a girl with thick, wavy jet-black hair and big emerald eyes staring into the mirror, wearing only a bra and underwear.
She turned to us in shock, and then screamed. She jumped into the shower and hid behind the curtain. Her head poked out, wide-eyed and terrified. Sasuke covered Naruto’s eyes, whilst Itachi covered Sasuke’s eyes. Itachi and I were left to gape in wonder. The girl, I noticed, had Sakura’s eyes and creamy skin.
“Parlez-vous français?” the girl asked. None of us moved. She sighed quickly.
“English, I presume?” she asked. I nodded, watching her.
“May I ask your name and business in the Haruno mansion?” Itachi asked stiffly. The girl laughed, music to our ears.
“Why, where else would I be? I think the true question is who are you and why you are here,” she stated, her eyes narrowing slightly. Naruto, being the obnoxious idiot he is, spoke up before any of us could stop him.
“We followed Sakura in here,” he said. The girl gasped, her eyes widening in shock.
“Shae darling, can you bring me a remedy?” she called out. A little girl ran in, carrying a small bottle. She handed it to the girl quickly.
“Miss, what’s wrong? What are these intruders?” she asked, emerald eyes shining. The girl sighed yet again.
“Run along, Shae. When you’re older.” The little girl did as she was told. The girl in the shower sucked down the contents of the bottle, of which I noticed was infused with chakra. Chakra boosters in the form of medecine? Hmm…the Harunos were rather advanced….
“I am Milessa Haruno. You are from the 2000s, no?” she asked. I nodded. It was obvious she was French. I had never heard of the Harunos being French, but I guess there was a lot about the Harunos I hadn’t heard about before… She looked at me with a sorrowful expression.
“So you are unfortunate enough to know a Sakura? How desolate,” she murmured the last part under her breath, as if her heart really poured out for us.
“Sakura’s the nicest person I know!” Naruto argued. Milessa shook her head.
“No. You misunderstood me. A Sakura is a fallen one. In the Haruno language, Haruno means rulers of the world. Sakuras are the reason we haven’t succeeded in our destiny yet. Not that it’s their fault, of course.” Milessa smoothed her hair, almost as if it were a nervous habit formed instead of biting nails or chewing on lips.
“What do you mean by the Haruno language?” Itachi asked curiously. I was every bit as curious as he was. I had never heard of any Haruno language. Milessa contemplated telling us any more.
“We Harunos have our own language. Every name has a meaning. Tell me your names, and I will tell you their meanings,” she commanded.
“Uzumaki Naruto. Believe it!” Nauto shouted. Milessa smiled at his name.
“Uzumaki means leader. Naruto means outspoken, different. Oh, and Believe it means that you are going to prove everyone wrong,” she met my eyes as she finished. I tried to hide the shock. She had described Naruto as if she had known him her entire life. Maybe she had… Sasuke looked intrigued.
“Uchiha Sasuke,” Sasuke stated smugly. Milessa frowned.
“Uchiha is sort of like a holder of power who protects others. I think that’s the right translation. It also means something along the lines of against society. It’s a tricky name. Sasuke means avenger, or one who holds grunges,” she looked at him fearfully, once again meeting my eyes. It was as if I was drawing her in.
“Uchiha Itachi,” Itachi threw his name out there. Milessa met his eyes for an instant before looking back at me.
“Itachi is commonly referred to as a prodigy. Its exact definition is one who excels, but never does as he want to,” her eyes never left mine. She also acted as if she knew Itachi all his life.
“Hatake Kakashi,” I drawled my name out. Milessa jumped back.
“Someone hand me my dress. Oh my! This is urgent!” she gasped. Sasuke grabbed her dress and handed it to her. It looked like nothing I’d ever saw before. It was slightly old fashioned but the material changed appearances constantly.
“What’s wrong?” Naruto asked her. She looked out, her hair tousled.
“Hatake means one who has been through many hardships. It also means very understanding. Kakashi means one who will save the fallen. Never before has there been a Kakashi to know a fallen! Can someone zip me up?” she asked, jumping out. Itachi zipped up the back of her dress without a second thought, as if he did that every day.
Maybe he did…..
“We must go to the Circle at once! This is of dire importance!” she started for the door with us hot on her heels.
“What’s the circle?” Sasuke asked. Milessa looked at him as if her were an alien.
“The Circle is the elders of the Haruno clan. They make decisions on what the outside world will know. They will know what to make of this,” she said, meeting my eyes once and for all before running down the hallway. We watched as she became transparent, taking the glory of the hallways with her.
As she faded, so did the grandeur of the mansion, until she was completely gone and we were left in a dimly lit cobweb filled hallway once more.
“We should probably go back to the living room in case Sakura decided to return there,” Itachi finally broke the silence with his suggestion. In a silent agreement, we started to follow him down the hallways. They seemed to change, as they had before, yet differently, as we walked. They were still rundown, but appeared to be…less so. Abruptly, the hallway ended in front of us with a door.
“That’s odd. I’m positive this was the way we came from,” Itachi stated with a frown that reached his eyes. Before anyone could stop him, Naruto opened the door. He was probably hoping it was another bathroom.
He was wrong. Dead wrong.
The floor was covered in blood. Bodies lie in heaps around the room, unmoving, drained of blood. A girl sat in the center, shaking as she examined her bloodstained fingers in horror. A banner was torn above her head. Her white blonde hair looked a bit pink with the blood mixed into it. Her emerald eyes looked up at us in shock, hurt, and loneliness.
The torn banner read, ‘Happy 18th Birthday Sakura!’ My blood ran cold. But it wasn’t our Sakura. That was for sure. She looked an awefully lot like Sakura, however.
“I-I killed them,” she whispered. Her hands still trembling, she reached – for me. Something felt wrong. I took a hesitant step towards her. Suddenly, a burst of raw chakra shot from her hands at me.
I jumped out of the way, rolling on the floor in the process. I got up covered in blood. She started sobbing. Ever fiber in my being was screaming at me to turn and run, but my feet started moving towards her. She looked up at me as I neared, tears glistening in her eyes. I bent down next to her, kneeling in the blood.
“What happened?” I asked her softly. Every nerve in my demanded I run away, but something about this Sakura made me want to protect her, almost like I wanted to protect our Sakura.
“I-I killed them. I got the Haruno power, but couldn’t control it. I wasn’t prepared….no one prepared me for it…” she started sobbing again. Before I could comfort her, I heard footsteps coming from down the hall. Sakura gasped and got up, running out the other door on the opposite side of the room from where we had entered. I turned to the doorway where I had entered, and by which Sasuke, Naruto, and Itachi were standing, to see two elderly looking men standing, surveying Sakura’s work. They didn’t even notice us.
“We must report to the Fourth about this….accident. I will tell him another classified incident occurred. He mustn’t know the truth,” the first man stated as he observed the room with hawk-like green eyes. He stopped on a small form. Him and the other man walked over to it – her.
“My god. Is that the other Sakura?” he asked. Both scanned her before the second man gasped.
“She survived? No one’s ever survived a Haruno attack before. Rush her to the ER!” he ordered the first man. The first man scooped up the Sakura, her pink hair flying behind her as he ran out the door. Pink hair? Oh god, was that a younger version of…?
“Yes, Hatake, that was a younger version of the Sakura you know,” the second man answered my thoughts. He looked over at me, his eyes stone.
“If you don’t do something to stop her, your Sakura will end up like her elder cousin. Of course, if she does, you won’t live to see the results,” he finished his forlorn speech as he walked out of the door, giving no look to anyone else in the room.
I turned to Itachi and Naruto and Sasuke.
“Can we please get out of here?” I begged them. Itachi nodded, opening the door to come face-to-face with our Sakura. Her eyes widened as she saw me, but she stepped out of the doorway so we could exit the already clean room.
“So,” she began, looking my form over from head to foot, “you’ve met my cousin.” She began to walk down the halls. I had to run to catch up with her, but I fell into synch with her once I did. Itachi walked on her other side, and the boys were behind us.
“What happened to her?” I asked Sakura, wiping some blood off my face. She stopped abruptly, looking up at me.
“She killed herself before the Circle could find her. They disposed of her body before the Fourth could find out. It is a Sakura’s destiny, as I’ve been told, to bring death and suffering, to all those around her.”
Then, as she was walking away, I heard a whisper coming from her.
“Now that my parents aren’t around to train me, I will end just like her, hanging from the rafters. Only my death won’t be as simple as hers. I was told by Milessa of the future that I am to bring death to all of Konoha. First, however, I will kill Deidara.”
He watched the mansion in fascination. Never before had he let someone go, but she seemed to be too beautiful to kill. He thought of her as the perfect art, and wanted her to go out with a bang. He watched as a girl with wavy jet-black hair and emerald eyes walked out on the porch, a lantern in her left hand. She saw him and smiled.
Of course, what he really wished was that he could get back to his normal time where he was in love and happy with his own Haruno. Milessa. The only way he could ever get back, however, was to kill the Sakura that stood in the way. All he had to do was set off a few more time bombs that would speed up the process.
As long as she self-destructed before her eighteenth birthday, he would be allowed to go back. As his Haruno walked back inside the mansion, he turned and started to run through the forests.
Deidara was not going to let one pink-haired brat stand in the way of his one true love.
So, how was it? Was it okay.? I know the story just took a major twist, and I am so sorry for keeping you all waiting so long. I know, it was barely worth it. But I hope you all like it!
Just so you know, the Milessa they met is Milessa from the future, as Sakura refers to her as. And it’s also Deidara’s Milessa.
I will attempt to explain everything in due time.
Love,
