Prefix:

Max and the Flock were seperated during a Flyboy attack. For a week Max searched for the Flock when suddenly disaster hit. She was flying when all of a sudden her wings stopped working. She could flap them, but they would catch no wind. Broken and depressed Max finds a town named Greenbury Meadow to live in until she can find the flock or get her flight back. Soon she is found out by a local police officer and with no credentials or birth certificates to say who she is, she is put into a foster home there and made to go to School (the real kind normal people go to). So basically the same Max; strong, sarcastic, easily furious, funny, and all around indestructable, With all the same skills except the whole actual flying part. Of course that in itself changes things.

Chapter 1:

I opened up my eyes to look at the clock, it read 4:30. Ugh. I was still acustomed to short sleeping hours. You know that can be really annoying sometimes. I looked around my room ,it was plain white kinda reminded me of a hotel room too. There was nothing personal in the room as if the person living there might just get up and leave forever at any momment. Well, that's exactly why. I had no intention to stay for long. I wanted out, now. I only plan on staying until I can fly again, but as the weeks go by and I still can't fly. I admitt I'm starting to lose hope, but I can't. I won't- cause if I do, well that's all I have right now. The only good thing I think about this whole no- fly thing is that with no flight for some reason there's no voice inside my head either. Actually I'll take the voice anytime as long as I can fly. I walked to the window and looked out. The sky was so blue and there was hardly any clouds, a perfect day for flying. Can this day be anymore depressing. I sighed then started to chuckle softly as my eyes caught the lock on the window. My foster parents put it there because they caught me trying to leave the house and run away a couple times. Ha, they thought this pathetic lock could keep me from leaving. Sure it would be easier to be able to fly away but even without flight I could get out of this place so easy. I started to laugh harder, until I heard something behind me. I abruptly stopped and whirled around. There standing in the doorway was a dark haired boy with pale skin and dark green eyes. Meet my fellow foster kid AKA the boy in the room across from mine.(HA you probably thought it was gonna be Fang cause I said 'dark haired boy', gotcha)

"You know Max laughing like a maniac this early in the morning is not good for your health."

"Good morning to you too, Daren. Did you sleep at all last night."

Daren and I are friends, at first I didn't trust him but he's pretty cool. He's a freak like me and always looking for ways to be 'free'. He ran away from home four years ago and up until three months ago has been jumping from foster home to foster home. He escapes them all and none of the police have ever been able to trace his real parents. Of course that's how we became friends he asked me to help him sneek out one time and I helped him we got out of the house and I was just going to buy him a plane ticket to any where he wanted to go with my never ending credit card (I wonder how the Flock is doing without that). Well we got all the way to the airport when the police caught us, the foster parents called them. I of course could have kicked ass and got us away from them but I need a place to stay for a while so I figure going to School is the price I must pay for my free room and all the food I can eat, sweet. So I just let them take us back. Daren fought the whole way back. The foster family put a lock on my window for it and bars on Darens window. There is also another thing that boy must be like the undead or something cause he's never asleep. If I wake up in the middle of the night he's awake, go to sleep late he's still awake after anyone go's to sleep, and take now for instance If I get up early he's already up. Heold me once that he uses the time that everyone uses to sleep, to plan his escape. He's funny that way he reminds me of me trying to escape the dreaded School that way. Now that I think about it that's probably were he sleeps, school.

"Nope", replied Daren, Of course not I thought.

''Did you come up with a fool proof plan on escapeing yet."

"Of course, I figured I'd chat with ya since we got a while until we go to the place were everyone thinks there learning but actually we only learn stuff that can easily be found out any where else."

He walked into my room as I asked,"Do you always have to be the rebel."

"Yes", he replied as he bounced onto my bed. I walked over to my desk chair and sat down as I asked,"So whatcha want to talk about?"

"Well we could start with why you were laughing like a syco whose about to kill someone when theres no one in the room with you to make you laugh. Seriously for a second I thought I was going to have to call the syiciatric ward and order the yellow jacket."

"Cute", I said. "For your information I was just thinking about the time we tried to escape and I got the lock on my window.''

"You found that funny. I seem to remember when the cops found us you didn't even try to get away from them as they took us back here.", his tone was annoyed as he remembered.

"Daren I didn't fight to be let go cause I was coming back, cops or no cops."

"Why? Don't you want freedom like me? That's what you told me when you met me."

"Of course I want freedom and to be out of here. I want to leave now ,but it's not time yet. Not now.", I replied a little sadness and anger in my voice for some reason.

"Are you sure your not just scared?"

I looked at him with hard eyes that showed no fear and would make most people cower and replied with a slight grin on my face that was sure to think I was mad but I didn't care I probably was. "I'm not scared and when it's time to get out of here, you'll know and let me tell you I'm leaving in grand style."

Daren looked at me with a mixture of emotions on his face. One was confusion, one was slightly suspious and the other was awe makeing up most of his emotion.

"You know what Max, you sure are strange." And with that he left after a little grin.

After I changed for school and had breakfast I made my lunch. My foster mom drove me and Daren to school every day after the time Daren tryed to run away from the bus stop. She even went to the extream of making sure the officers at our school kept watch tomake sure we made it to all our classes. Not like you couldn't ditch them though. Well I could Daren on the other hand who has tried it like six times always gets caught. How he got away from the other foster families I'll never know.

We pulled up to school and got out we were in different classes. My first class was math, snore. I sat at my seat by the window in the back room. Soon people were crowding around me. My two friends Jess and Kat. Jess was a fashion diva who obsessed with her clothes and boys. Though she also was a musician who wrote the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It's actually as if she's a different person when she talks about music. Kat is also an unusual person she wears all black is into all emo stuff and yet all her notebooks and bookbag have smilie faces on them and she loves the color pink, though she won't wear it. She reminds me of the moon sometimes, with the dark senery and yet so bright. I'm such a poet. I started talking to them as the class begun. Soon everything became quite though and my gaze wondered to the window. The sky was so free looking and I would have given anything that minute to just break the window and go soaring into the sky. To feel that rush of wind sweep by. To get back to the Flock and have my true place back, with them. I seriously wish that my wings would just work. I mean why all of a sudden do they just stop. Of course I've thought of the possiblity that my human genes somehow overid my bird DNA but I'm not even sure if that's possible. Then theres the voice why doesn't-. Suddenly my thoughts were interupted.

"Miss Ride, Miss Ride,- MAX!'', I suddenly heard my Math teacher scream at the top of h8is lungs.

"What?", I asked dazed.

"What, Miss Ride is the answer to the math problem."

I looked around the room, some kids had smug little grins on there faces, some looked board, some looked scared for me, and my friend's expressions were a mixture of apoligetic for not telling me the teacher was trying to get my attention and a little happy some thing amuseing was happening. I looked at the problem on the board, I had no idea.

"Miss Ride we just said the answer. Were you paying attention?"

Oh so it was one of those tricks to see if you were paying attention. I should have just said I wasn't paying attention but then he would have given me a detention, this teacher already hates me. So I thought I'd talk my way out of a detention.

"Well actually Mr. Coronald (teachers name)" , I said cooly with a sweet and innocent smile and expression that Angel used all the time. "I was paying attention, it's just that the answer was said so low that I couldn't hear it."

Mr. Coronald looked taken aback but he was persistant. Did I mention that he used to be a lawyer, CrAp.

"Miss. Ride if that were the case than why were you looking out the window and why didn't you raise your hand and ask to repeat the answer.", Mr. Coronald stood firm on wanting me in detention.

"Well I was just going to raise my hand when you called on me, and as for staring out the window I was just thinking about the answer for myself. You know to see if I could get it without raiseing my hand and asking for it repeated." Wow, I am good.

"Well then, Miss Ride Did you find an aswer on your own?

"No Mr Coronald I didn't quite get it. Perhaps you will explain it one more time." Another fake smile fixed him.

The rest of Math went by smoothly and people came up to me after class saying my preformance was awesome. After Math of course I had Science which was held outside and to my great annoyance we were studying birds. How approprieate. Then by the time the rest of the day went by I was ready to go to my foster home. I was actually so tierd when I got home I was planning on going to sleep. That is until the doorbell rang. I walked to the door and opened it up. It took all me effort not to groan when I saw who was at the door. Three boys stood there. One blonde with blue eyes and dimples, one brunette with green eyes and pale skin, and the last was tan with brown hair and brown eyes. Let me introduce Jay, Kevin, and Derek or as I call the the I heart Max fan club. They all had major, and creepy crushes on me and they made a point to see me everyday. They also go to my school and live three houses down.

"Hi, Max.", said Jay smileing hugely.

"Hey guys, I appreciate (not) you coming over but I was just leaving so. Bye." I moved around them so that I could get a clear shot to the sidewalk. I went to the side walk, they were following.

"Hey Max, can we come?"

"Um I don't think-"

"Awe come on Max if we can keep up can we come?" An idea suddenly hit me. I knew that there was no way these guys would leave me alone, but I figured I could out run them. Why not, I had nothing better to do.

"Sure", I held up my pointer finger."On the condition that you can keep up." With that I took off.

I ran far away, just kept running. Even when the fan club had given up trying to even catch me on bikes. When I ran I was almost flying, almost. Then that thought reminded me to try to fly again. I hadn't tried in a while. Probably since three weeks when I fell so hard I almost broke my arm. I ran to a feild that was really sucluded, were no one would see my wings. I pulled my jacket off and unfurled my wings. A cold breaze tingled my feathers. I smiled, maybe I'll fly again soon. Oh how I need to fly. I can already feel my heart break a little every time I fall. I need to fly again. Then I start running, wind rushes passed. Then my body leaps im the air and wind finds it's way through my feathers. I pump them through the air. Maybe, maybe I think. Crash. No, my heart falls as I spill out on the ground. I try again. Run, jump, crash. And again. Run, jump, crash! Dirt smudges me face, which mixes in with my tears. My clothes are in scraps now, blood stained, mud and dirt stained, with tears both sliced and wet. My face is red and I'm about to crumble from exustion. I lay there on the ground for a while trying to calm my breath enough to go to the house and get a shower. With that another depressing thought, maybe I'm going to be here longer than I thought.
