Chapter 1- Suicidal Schizophrenic

Disclaimer-Bleach©TiteKubo

A/N: Awesome! A new story! It’s been floating around in my head for a while now, so I decided to write it out and put it here! Yay!

AU with suicidal themes and yaoi (later on…)

Hypochondria:

1839, "illness without a specific cause," earlier (1668) "depression or melancholy without real cause,"

Please don’t make me go over there, daddy! I don’t like uncle Gin, he makes me feel icky.’

Don’t say that, you don’t mean it. Uncle Gin is a nice man, and he takes good care of you while I’m at work, so just do your daddy a favor and go there a few more times?’

Little did Isshin know the torment that Ichigo was subject to on a daily basis. But in the space of a long 10 years would he begin to understand…

“I’m sorry, sir, but your son has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.” The nurse informed, bowing slightly to the disheveled man in front of her.

“No…” Isshin muttered, crestfallen as he looked into the room where his son was currently resting. He took the medical papers from the nurse and after explaining he was a doctor himself, examined them. Sure enough, all the signs were evident in his mannerisms and in the psych-evaluation tests he took as well.

His son was a schizophrenic.

He should have realized sooner that there was something wrong with his son when he started hurting himself. It started with the darker moods, then the cutting. Isshin had tried to stop him, prescribing anti-depressants that he literally forced Ichigo to take. He sent him to Gin’s house more often, assuring himself that his friend would be able to get through to his son, since he had spent more time with him anyway.

It wasn’t until two weeks ago that Isshin finally saw the depth of his son’s disturbance.

Ichigo went to school like he normally did and was present the first half of the day, but when he didn’t show up for his afternoon classes, people began to worry about the slightly suicidal teen. They didn’t know he would go that far.

Some teen-age girls in his class found his mangled body on the sidewalk and immediately called the police and emergency services.

Ichigo had become so sick of the world that he tried to commit suicide by jumping off the roof of his school.

He was rushed to the hospital once it was discovered that he was miraculously still alive. His family was contacted, and Isshin picked up the girls from school and rushed to the hospital to see his son.

They were placed in a waiting room for around 12 hours when a doctor finally came to explain the damage.

“Your son tried to commit suicide, that much is clear. However, he has survived by nothing less than a miracle. He’s going to be all right. But, there is some permanent damage that must be addressed, Kurosaki-san, can I speak to you alone, please?” The doctor asked.

Isshin looked at his daughter’s worried faces and looked back at the doctor. “What I hear, my daughters hear as well.” He answered. The doctor sighed but continued, “Very well. There was slight head trauma, causing him to have a concussion, but nothing that he can’t sleep off. There was some expected trauma on his neck, but no paralyzing damage. His right shoulder has been dislocated, and his right arm was broken in three separate places. His hipbone is fractured, and both legs have been broken as well. As for the permanent damage, his ankles have been pulverized, there is no way that the bones and joints can be healed. Your son will have to rely on a wheel chair for the rest of his life.”

Isshin let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding. He was glad his son had survived, but he hadn’t expected such damage. And now, the once free-spirited, athletic boy he knew was now condemned to life in a wheel chair. Yuzu had covered her ears and started crying since the mention of Ichigo’s ankles being ‘pulverized’. She was too young and her vocabulary wasn’t extensive enough to know what it meant, but she knew it wasn’t good, judging by her father flinching at the word. She buried her head into her sister’s shoulder and Karin pulled her close, shushing her sobs.

Karin had remained stone-faced throughout the whole explanation, but every description of Ichigo’s ailments jabbed directly into her heart. But she wouldn’t cry, she would be strong for Yuzu, her father, and for Ichigo himself. If he was so desperate to die that he would jump off a building, she figured the last thing he would want to see is such depressing moods.

At that moment, Isshin’s phone started ringing and he immediately answered it.

“Yes, hello? Gin? You heard? No, he’s in intensive care right now, yes…Yes…No, he hasn’t woken up yet…What? Of course you can come. In fact, I need you to come and take the girls home for me, I’ll be staying here…Yeah, waiting room 22A level 4 of the Sakuragi Hospital on 12th street…You got all that? Right…Uh huh…yeah, thanks a lot. Uh huh, bye.”

Isshin hung up the phone and turned to his daughters. “Gin is coming to take you home, and Orihime-chan and Ishida-kun are going to take care of you while I’m gone. He’s also going to pick up a few things of mine and Ichigo’s.” He explained, sitting down again and running a hand through his hair.

“B-but daddy! I want to stay with Ichigo!” Yuzu protested.

“Yuzu, you’ve had a long day, you’ve stayed awake this whole time. Gin’s going to take you home and Orihime-chan is going to help you to bed. She and Ishida-kun are going to stay there all night, what’s left of it, at least. So don’t worry! I’ll call if he wakes up, so just go home and get some rest.” He urged.

“C’mon, Yuzu. You know he’s right. You won’t help Ichi-nii if you force yourself to stay awake. You might hurt him even more.” Karin said. Yuzu finally nodded, sniffing in defeat. Her expression was set in stone however when she turned to the doctor. “Make my Ichi-nii better.” She demanded, a childlike pout appearing on her features. The doctor smiled warmly, patting her on the head. “Don’t worry, he’ll be better again soon, I promise.”

xXxXxXx

The first time Ichigo woke up it was a disastrous event. The nurses were calm and collected, helping him to sit up and readjusting his bed to a more upright position. His actions, however, slightly concerned the doctor. He was untrustworthy of whatever they were going to do to him, asking for them to explain before they even touched him. He recoiled from every touch, and whenever someone different than usual entered the room he would whimper in fear, drawing himself as far away from them as he possibly could.

Isshin, naturally, was notified that his son had woken up and he rushed to see him, followed by his close friend, Gin. Ichigo’s face brightened slightly at the appearance of his father, who went and gave him a tender hug, as gently as he could manage without upsetting Ichigo’s wounds.

“How are you holding out, son?” Isshin asked softly, taking a seat at the chair next to the bed. “I’m sorry I did that…I-I didn’t know what I was thinking, I just couldn’t take it anymore…” Ichigo broke into tears and started sobbing. His voice was harsh and rasping, due to the fact that he hadn’t drank any water for the past week. Isshin quickly received a glass of water from the nurses and carefully administered the cool liquid, not wanting to put a strain on Ichigo. “Sh…” Isshin soothed, smoothing out Ichigo’s dirty, blood flecked tresses.

There was a knock on the door and Gin entered.

“Ah, Ichigo-kun, you’re awake.” He commented with that creepy smile that reached to his ears, with those squinty little eyes that finally drove Ichigo wild.

The poor boy screamed in terror, almost falling off the bed in his attempt to retreat from the approaching figure.

Mass confusion and hysteria engulfed the room as the nurses tried to push Isshin and Gin into the hallway as the doctor and several head nurses issued a sedative to Ichigo, who was struggling as much as he could, and was still screaming in fear, eyes wide, staring at Gin who was just grinning back.

xXxXxXx

The doctor had then asked permission to administer a few psychological tests. Something was clearly wrong with Ichigo, and it had to be found out before he hurt himself even more.

A week of analysis later and the nurse informed Isshin that his son was a schizophrenic.

He had looked at the test papers and exams, and it all made sense. But where did it begin?

“I would like to administer one more test. The first time your son woke up, he reacted to a certain person. I don’t have enough information at the present to be sure, but I believe that the one causing your son all this pain is your friend, Ichimaru Gin.” The doctor stated.

Isshin was shocked to say the least, but he had seen the reaction himself, and it was nothing less than pure fear that his son was feeling towards his father’s friend.

Isshin swallowed thickly, “Very well. Do what you must.”

xXxXxXx

Ichigo knew something was wrong; they kept bringing in different people to see him, all one at a time. He didn’t catch on until he realized that they didn’t send in anyone he knew personally yet; it was all the people who had been in the room the first time he woke up.

Finally they sent his father in, and he met his father’s eyes with a worried expression. Isshin smiled weakly in response, sitting at the chair next to his son’s bed. “Ichigo, if there was something wrong, you would tell me, right?” Isshin asked quietly, taking Ichigo’s battered hand into his own. Ichigo made a choking sound and looked away. Isshin looked away as well, and he stood to leave. But as he stood, Ichigo turned frantically and grabbed onto his father’s hand.

“It was him! All him! He never let me tell! Please help me- ” Ichigo trailed off, looking behind his father with wide eyes and started screaming again. There at the door was Isshin’s friend, Ichimaru Gin. Isshin growled deep in his throat and ran at the grinning man, punching him directly in the face. “What did you do to my son?!” Isshin roared, causing Ichigo to whimper in fear and draw himself farther away. The doctors and nurses ran into the room, tearing the two men apart from one another and sedating Ichigo once again.

“Let’s move this argument somewhere else, sirs.” The doctor commanded angrily, steering them into and down the hall. He moved them both into an unused room, and he had retrieved a policewoman as well, in case things got out of hand.

“Now tell me, Gin, what have you done to my son?!” Isshin asked again. The named man smirked smugly, “A little late for that Isshin, what ever I did has already done its damage. I don’t deny it; I may have…toyed…with your son when you sent him over to my house when you were at work. Maybe you should have listened to him when he tried to warn you.” The man smirked cruelly, licking his lips at the mention of ‘toyed’. “Did you know, your son has a lovely voice, especially when he’s crying out for you when I-” Gin had no time to finish speaking when the policewoman slammed her fist into his face, sending him down for the count. She leaned back again, shaking her hand. “Sorry, I’ve got a daughter, I don’t like knowing sickos like him exist out there…” She explained, flicking her purple ponytail back over her shoulder. Isshin took her extended hand.

“Thank you, miss-?”

“Shihoin. Yoruichi Shihoin.” She supplied with a catlike grin.

“Kurosaki Isshin. Thank you again.” He answered, with an equivalent grin.

“Now, I’m going to take this douche down to the station.” She stated, kicking him in the side.

When Yoruichi had hauled Gin out of the room and out of the hospital, Isshin and the doctor made their way back to Ichigo’s room. “How long has it been since you started sending your son over to his house?” The doctor asked. Isshin heaved a great sigh, realizing how long he had unwittingly tortured his son. “About ten-eleven years now…” He conceded, pinching the bridge of his nose and closing his eyes, allowing the doctor to steer him back.

“The damage is irreversible, however, something has concerned me about the mentality of your son. He seems to love his family very much. You said he was depressed and started cutting himself, and you prescribed anti-depressants, correct? And you said he stopped, and seemed to be fairing much better.” The doctor asked, his voice thoughtful. “Yes,” Isshin replied, not knowing what the doctor was getting at.

“It’s all on speculation but given the nature of his injuries, I believe he was pushed off the roof, he didn’t jump.”

Isshin stopped in his tracks, considering the new idea.

Ichigo had gone to school that morning; Isshin had said he was going to be there when he got home so he was happier than usual. He attended his classes and all his morning teachers e-mailed Isshin to keep him informed on his son’s behavior. They all said he was doing fine, interacting with others and being attentive in class. However, one of his teachers said she saw him go upstairs to eat lunch on the roof, and she thought nothing of it, seeing as he had done it loads of times before. But something else she mentioned lingered in his mind; she said she later saw a man leave the roof staircase and head straight to an exit. And it was after that that Ichigo’s body was found. Isshin gasped and started running towards Ichigo’s room.

“Do you remember something, sir?!” The doctor asked, trying to keep up with the speeding father. “I think you’re right!” Isshin answered, frantically yanking open the door to Ichigo’s room and was startled to see Yuzu and Karin in the room. “Wha-?”

“Dad, before you go off your rocker, Gin left us with Orihime and she fell asleep, and Yuzu wanted to see Ichigo so we took a bus…” Karin explained, looking at her twin, smiling guiltily. “I just wanted to see Ichi-nii!” Yuzu shouted, tears coming to her eyes.

The named boy smiled down at her and patted her head affectionately. “You can come see me any time you want, Yuzu. I’m obviously not going anywhere.” Ichigo assured her, motioning to his bandaged legs and feet. She smiled slightly at his small crack of humor.

Isshin mentally slapped himself for forgetting why he just ran through several levels of the hospital to get to his son. “Ichigo!” He called urgently, bringing his attention to his father.

Isshin took in a deep breath and let it out. “You…didn’t jump off the school, did you…Ichigo?” He asked softly, noticing the confusion on Ichigo’s face.

“Of course I didn’t!” Ichigo answered as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“What? You thought I did? I thought my injuries were enough to tell you that I didn’t jump. If I jumped, I would have done it face first. My legs got most of the damage and my upper body received very little. I just assumed…” Ichigo trailed off, seeing the worried expression on all their faces. “What?” He asked hesitantly.

“Ichigo…It was Gin, wasn’t it? Gin pushed you off the roof.” Isshin asked.

Ichigo looked in the opposite direction and after a while nodded slowly in ascent.

“That bastard…” Isshin muttered darkly, taking his son’s shaking hand and holding it tightly.

xXxXxXx

Gin was later arrested for numerous charges; the most outstanding was the attempted murder of Ichigo Kurosaki. They sued Gin, of course, and found that he was a very rich man. In the end, Gin paid for all of Ichigo’s hospital bill and rehab, as well as counseling. He was investigated and it turns out that he had done similar things to several other people nearby. He was charged for those as well, and let’s say that Ichimaru Gin will be enjoying the hospitality of the state prison for a long, long time.

Ichigo was faring better now. He was released from the hospital a week after Gin’s prosecution. He had to be present for the trial, and they received a strong sympathy vote for Ichigo.

Justice was served and Ichigo could return home with his family, though all he wanted to do was rest. His schedule had been non-stop with physical therapy and counseling with a seasoned psychiatrist who was experienced with schizophrenia.

It was there that he met Grimmjow Jaggerjacques.

A/N: Whew! Long ass chapter! No, it’s not a oneshot, obviously. (Duh…)

As you can tell, this is quite different than my other story, hopefully you still like it.

Thanks!
