And miles to go before I sleep

Angela Chase’s fingers drummed the keys of her computer as she stared at the luminous screen. Taking a sip of her hours cold coffee, she continued to stare at the once sentence that was typed into her word document.

It all began with a single question.

That’s as far as the young author had gotten before a case of writers block (or this was the excuse she kept telling herself) hit. Her newest novel, titled The Battlefield was not coming as well as she had been expecting. Although Angela knew that this story should have been the easiest to write, since it was her own…based on her high school experiences and HIM, she had a hard time going back to the place that had caused her so much pain.

Sighing to herself the once red-headed girl closed her laptop and decided to take a walk to check her mailbox to clear her head. As she neared the metal box at the end of her long driveway, she opened it, not expecting much, bills if anything.

Three letters lay inside the metal frame and as Angela determined the first two were phone and cable bills, the second, thicker envelope intrigued her. Glancing at the return address, her eyes went wide as she quickly flipped it over and with trembling fingers began to open the envelope as one particular memory came flooding back to her.

August 28th 1997

Angela knew that her relationship with Jordan wasn’t the most stable, but there was something about him that always drew her to him…no matter what he did. A person could say that he was Angela’s soul mate, her one true love…but at this moment Angela didn’t feel that way.

She sat her front stoop, waiting for the familiar purr of his car as she stared at the paper in her hands. When the familiar sound of his engine greeted her ears, she put her head down not willing herself to look at him as he made his way towards her.

He spoke in a husked tone “Hey” and bent over to kiss her. She moved away and stood up, unable to make herself look into his beautiful eyes.

“Angela what-“

“You know what!” She screamed as she threw the balled up paper toward his slumped frame. Jordan smoothed out the paper and looked at the writing on the page. His eyes began to widen and then look defeated as he slowly looked up to meet Angela’s raged filled orbs.

“I’m sorry, I just-“

“You just what? Decided that since I wouldn’t sleep with you until I was ready you were going to continually cheat on me what random people?” You think I’d forgive and forget like before? emotion. “How long as it been going on?”th be-because you were drunk, I forgave you when I found out that you definitely didn’t write that letter, but I can’t forgive you for this.” She paused, her voice becoming rattled wiRayanne th. “You lied to me, you son of a bitch. I forgave you when you slept withShe looked at him, tears forming in her eyes. “Don’t speak just listen….” She said taking a deep brea

Jordan was at loss for words, but he managed one simple question “How did you know?”

Brian saw you again. He didn’t wanna tell me, but he did, because I deserve to be loved, I deserve-

“Angela I do love you”

“SHUT UP!” she screamed, clenching her fists and shutting her eyes. “I don’t wanna hear anymore just go!”

Jordan stood up and headed to his car. He turned back briefly as if he was going to say something, but decided against it. With one last look at the man she knew she would never get over, Angela headed inside and up to her room.

The wind blew and snapped Angela out of her daydream. Looking down at the card she pulled out of the envelope she knew the inevitable homecoming had come, for Sharon had sent her the “you must come or I will come up there and attack you” high school reunion invitation. Angela slowly began the walk back to her house as she remembered that she told her mom she wouldn’t be coming home for after university.

She had been true to her word; she hadn’t been back in town for over 7 years, not even for Christmas. Her mom and dad had tried to persuade her to come home, but she wouldn’t. Every other year her parents and Danielle would come up to visit and the other years Rayanne, Rickie, Sam (Rickie’s Boyfriend), Sharon and Bobby (Sharon’s husband) would come up for a few days.

She knew she was being childish, but as long as Jordan was in Three Rivers, she couldn’t bring herself to come back, not even for a day. It was fear that kept her away. The fear of confronting the one thing that she had never been able to deal with.

She had just started to herself another cup of coffee when the phone rang causing her to drop her cup, letting it smash on the kitchen floor. Deciding to let the machine pick it up and clean up her mess, she listened to her own voice on the phone.

“You have reached Angela Chase, I’m unable to take your call right now, so please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible”

“Angela?” said a deep male voice on the other end. Angela froze, it couldn’t be, could it? Jordan?
