CHAPTER ONE: The Stubby Nosed Lawyer
It was an extremely hot summer afternoon. I swear, even the flies were fanning themselves with their wings. Sadly enough, I had nothing with me to fan myself so my hand had to suffice. I was sitting in an old folding chair in a lawyers office, located in the one and only Phoenix, Arizona. I had grown up there practically my whole life. Actually, come to think of it, I did grow up there my whole life. You see, I was raised by my grandma, because my Mom died and my Dad left my mom when I was only 6 months old. Or, so I thought.
Yeah, It wasn’t until just recently that I found out that what I grew up thinking the whole fourteen years of my very short life wasn’t true. Of course, the part about my dad leaving my mom was true, but I was already with my grandma by then. What I just found out is that my mom is still alive. Big shocker to someone who grew up thinking she was an orphan.
The reason we were at this burning hot legal office was because my grandma was filling out legal adoption papers and I had to be there for the interview. Then, they would ship me off on an airplane to Hollywood, California. Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t think I mentioned that my Mom is famous? Her full name is Alexandra Marie Day. AKA, Alexis Day. Yes, that’s her. The famous country singer. I’ve never really been open to music. I’ve hated it ever since I found out that that’s the reason my dad left my mom. If I could even call her that. I grew up without her, I didn’t know why she was claiming me now.
I leaned back in my chair, causing it to squeak. I sighed. When was that lawyer going to get here? I looked over at my grandma. She was falling asleep in her chair. The poor thing. If what she had told me was true, she was going to go to a nursing home, since she couldn’t take care of herself. I pretty much took care of both her and me when I was growing up.
Finally, the door to the office opened. In walked the stubby nosed lawyer wearing the ugliest color of what looked life barf on his suit. It seriously looked as if someone (or something) had thrown up on it. I stifled a baby barf that formed in the back of my throat, then tapped my grandma waking her up from her doze.
“Wha! Wha! I’m awake! Brianna, don’t do that to me hun!” She said holding her heart. The stubby nosed lawyer sat down and opened his briefcase. I groaned when I saw it was full of papers. We were going to be here in the 120 degree Phoenix hot weather for who knows how long.
“We thart with legal house ithues.” He said. I noticed he had the biggest lisp when he talked. I rolled my eyes. What a dud. He probably was the kid in second grade who always picked his nose and stuffed it in the back of his desk for later. He handed a couple of pages to my grandma to sign. I sighed and leaned back in my chair again. Mr. Stubby Nose threw me a “I-don’t-have-time-for-disruptive-teens-so-you-better-behave” look. What the heck? I sat down and crossed my arms. Jeez.

FINALLY we finished almost all the papers. I even had to sign a couple. We were on the last three, which were the actual adoption papers (pretty much the whole reason we came). It was so weird to be adopted by your real mom. She had given all custody to my grandma, so we had to go through the papers. My grandmother signed her curly signature, then we all stood up. He shook my grandmothers hand, then turned to me to shake my hand, only he shook it with an expression like he was touching cow poo or something. I wouldn’t be surprised if I was doing the same thing, seeing as I had no proof that he wiped at all after going to the bathroom.
“Your paperth will be prothethed then finalithed. Here is the package that was thent here. It includth airfare, taxi pathes, blah blah blah.” He opened the door as if he wanted us to get out as fast as we could, and I gladly accepted. When my grandma and I got out to the car, I asked if I could drive. I had my learners permit, and as long as I had a legal adult with me, I could drive in between any daylight hours. She accepted, and I gleefully drove home.
When we got to our tiny house, my grandma went to her bed to go to sleep. I ran into my room and sat down on the bed. I ripped open the package to check what was in it. The contents included: Airfare, LIMO information (the lawyer had it wrong. I was riding in a LIMO!), 200 dollars cash (and I got to keep it if I didn’t spend it all), and the address of my new house. It was so weird, thinking that I was going to live in Hollywood, with a real mom. I didn’t even know what she was like yet. Part of me wanted to stay in Phoenix the rest of my life, and part of me wanted to leave here, and leave the past behind. I sat the stuff from the package back on my bed and turned on my computer (from 10,000 BC, might I add). I googled Alexis Day, then clicked on images. As I went through everything, I realized how much I looked like her. It was so weird. I also googled Alexis Day’s House and sure enough, I was able to pull up a lot of images. WOW! It was amazing! It had a pool, it was three stories, and we even had a maid service. I was so anxious to move, but in the same way, I was so nervous to leave.
