Chapter 1 Vanishing

So close…she was so close to finally getting the job. After six years getting her degree in Forensic Science, Charlie Andrews was finally on her way to becoming the DNA Tech at the Las Vegas Crime Lab. It had always been her dream and finally, it was about to come true. After her interview with the Crime Lab's director, Conrad Ecklie, Charlie felt on top of the world. They had just taken a drug test so that they can prove they took the necessary procedures of hiring her before she actually started work. Things could not have gone any better. The sun had set behind the hills of the desert surrounding the city of Las Vegas, sending her home. The parking garage was almost empty, save the eight cars that were just arriving. Soon, she would be just like them, pulling in to start her shift. After getting situated in her car, she started the ignition and headed home. Charlie loved driving through the streets of Las Vegas at night. It was such a beautiful city. The beam of light emitting from the Luxor flew into the sky, shining as bright as the moon. The towers of New York New York towered into the sky with its rollercoaster rolling around it. But after Charlie drove farther away, the less bright the city became to be.

Charlie was driving down Boulder Highway when she noticed a pair of headlights following her. In fact, they had been following her since she left the city. Of course, she could just be overacting and it was just someone heading the same way she was. After all, she did live in a very populated neighborhood. As she continued driving down the highway, there was a loud BANG! and her car fell to one side. Her tire had just blown. "Son of a bitch," she muttered as she pulled off to the side of the road.

When she got out of her vehicle, she saw that her right rear tire had actually leaked the pressure and was now extremely flat. How did that happen? She hadn't touched her tires since that last time she cleaned it, which was over a month ago. She was examining the tire closer when a male voice asked, "Is everything alright?"

Charlie turned to see a man standing over her. She could barely make out his face, due to the shadows of the night looming over him. "No, my tire went flat," she replied.

"Here, let me take a look," the man stated as he walked closer and knelt next to her. Charlie backed up to allow the man a closer look of her tire and watched as he looked over it. "Looks like someone plunged a nail into your tire and it came loose. Here, take a look."

Charlie hesitated. It may have been her instincts on not trusting strangers…she did study criminology in college, but then again, he could have been some nice Samaritan. So, Charlie lent in to take a look at her tire. But she didn’t see anything. "What am I suppose to be looking at?" she asked.

"Look closer, you'll see the hole the nail left."

When she lent in closer, she felt a cold hand placed on the back of her neck, and before she could let out a scream, her head was rammed into the fender of the car and then, darkness.

Captain Jim Brass had been sitting in his office, staring at a folder on his desk when he received a call from the Undersheriff. "This is Brass," he greeted.

As the Undersheriff talked, Brass let out a long sigh and replied, "Alright, I'll send them out."

After hanging up, Brass headed to the break room where he found the entire Graveyard Shift lounging around. Catherine Willows was standing at the counter with Warrick Brown, talking about some unknown subject. Nick Stokes was eating a sandwich at the table while going over a magazine he had brought from his house. Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle stood against the wall, laughing and joking at something that Brass couldn't catch. And finally, young Greg Sanders lay stretched out on the couch, his headphones blaring from some Radiohead song playing. "Hey guys, I just got a call from the Undersheriff," stated Brass, turning everyone's attention towards him.

Greg had just taken out his headphones as Brass continued, "A witness called stating that there was an abandoned car off the side of Boulder Highway, she wants CSI to come check it out."

"Why does she need us to come check it out?" asked Nick.

"Because there is a pool of blood next to the car."

That's when they realized the severity of the situation. "Is there a body?" asked Grissom.

Brass just shook his head, realizing that it was worse than they thought. Sighing, Grissom turned to his team and ordered, "Alright, I want everyone to grab their kits and start heading out."

Everyone nodded and headed out of the room, leaving Grissom with Brass. As they were gone, Grissom asked, "You're holding something back, Jim. What is it?"

After rubbing his forehead, Brass replied, "I ran the plates and they came back to the new DNA Tech that Ecklie was talking to earlier."

"Great…a case close to home," replied Grissom as he shook his head and followed the rest of his team out.

The drive down Boulder Highway was silent. There were two black Denalis, one holding Nick, Warrick and Catherine and the other holding Grissom, Sara and Greg. Both cars, holding six different people, had the same silence. They had all been told the news that it was the new DNA tech. Ecklie had informed them of the candidate and they were planning on hosting a welcome to the lab party for her that Friday. Looks like that was moved back. When they arrived at the scene, they found crime scene tape surrounding the car and officers at the scene. Regular by-passers on Boulder Highway stopped on the side of the road to get a look. The only thing they were interested in the car that was surrounded by yellow tape. The entire team walked up to the car where they saw Sofia Curtis waiting for them. "It's about time you showed up," she said.

"Good to see you to, Sofia," replied Grissom as he turned to his team, "Alright, we're going to divide and conquer. Nick, you're with me on the car. Sara and Warrick, you take the highway. Look for any signs on tire treads leading away from this spot. Catherine and Greg, you guys take the perimeter behind the car. The perpetrator may have taken her somewhere else."

Everyone nodded and headed to their areas of searching. While Catherine and Greg walked behind the car, Catherine asked, "Which way do you want to head, Denver or LA?"

"I'll take LA," replied Greg.

By Denver and LA, they meant east and west. LA was directly west of Las Vegas and Denver was to the east. So, Greg headed west, looking for any evidence of the culprit and victim. He had walked 100 yards when he heard what seemed like a whisper. Turning around, he saw no one there. "Is anyone there?" asked Greg.

There was no respond. So, Greg shrugged it off and turned back to towards LA. He had walked a bit further when he heard the same noise…only louder. Greg turned around, but didn't see anyone still. Getting a little freaked out, Greg turned back towards LA. He had only walked a bit further when a full voice shouted, "STOP!"

Greg froze to the spot. Slowly, he looked over his shoulder, but still found no one. But when Greg turned around, he came face to face with a tall brown-haired, brown-eyed woman. Greg jumped out of his skin, his heart racing. "Hi," she smiled at him.

"Uh…h…what are you doing here?" asked Greg, breathing heavily.

Thinking about it, the woman replied, "I don't know."

"Well…who are you? Like, what is your name?"

"Uh…Charlie, Charlie Andrews."

Greg's stomach fell into his intestines. "Charlie Andrews? YOU'RE ALIVE! CATHERINE, COME QUICK!" shouted Greg.

He turned away from Charlie when Catherine came running towards him. "What is it, Greg?" she asked.

"Look, it's…" began Greg when he turned around and saw that Charlie was not there."But…she was right here," he muttered.

Catherine placed her hand on his shoulder and said, "It's alright, Greg. You were probably just seeing things."

And with that, Catherine left back towards Denver again, leaving Greg in a state of confusion. After Catherine left, he looked around and headed back towards LA, trying to figure out the reason for what he saw.
