Disclaimer: I do not own Artemis Fowl or Harry Potter. They belong to Eoin Colfer and J.K. Rowling respectively. No money is being made off of this work of fan fiction.

Author’s note: Unlike the last time I made an attempt to write something like this, this is entirely my work (in the last case, some chapters were 90 the work of another), and as such, the chapters may take much longer to publish. However, I will admit that this series will be borrowing a few concepts from Elbereth in April and her Family Name fics. If you’ve read them, you’ll know what I’m borrowing, and if you haven’t, I highly recommend them, even though they haven’t been updated since January 2006. And without further Ado, here is the fiction!

Gold & Magic

Chapter 1: The Letter

The sound of Fingers clicking against a keyboard filled Artemis Fowl the Second’s study. Like he often did when he was wrestling with a new problem or plot, he was hacking into to some ‘maximum security’ computer network. This time is was that of the U.S Pentagon. He found it refreshingly easy.

Artemis smiled to himself; not everything was that easy. Even with his towering intellect, some problems were harder to solve than others. The problem was at present wrestling with was exactly where to invest a particular chunk of the gold he had stolen from the LEP several months previous. There were various markets that showed quite promising outlooks, but unlike his usual illicit financing activities, where one could account for many more of the variables, stock trading was far more hit and miss.

As he slipped past the last defense of the network, he heard a fluttering wings come in through the open window. Raising an eyebrow, he looked up and saw an owl, in broad daylight, perched on the window sill. Tied to its leg was an envelope. Now, although it did not show on his face, he was quite…confused wasn’t the best term, but it would serve for the moment. He only grew more so as the owl flew over near him, shook the letter off of its leg, then did a U-turn and left by the still open window.

Artemis just sat there for a moment, the strangeness of it all slowing him, but just for a moment. Curiosity quickly got the better of him, and he reached over to the heavy envelope, picking it up.

Upon opening it, two folded pieces of parchment fell out. One of them looked to be several sheets, so Artemis grabbed the smaller one and unfolded it. His eyes ran across it for a minute. As he finished, he reached over to the communicator on the desk near him.

Clicking it on, he spoke into it. “Butler? Are you free at the moment?”

Butler’s voice came through, “Yes Artemis.”

“Come to the study immediately please.”

He put the communicator down and looked at the first sheet again. Surely this had to be a joke of some kind.

Dear Master Fowl,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Due to circumstances beyond the control of the School administration, your magical education has been postponed, but given your remarkable aptitude for learning new material, we are confident that you will be able to catch up with the students your age, who will be entered into second year. Enclosed is a list of all your required books and materials. A representative of the school will be contacting you shortly.

It was signed by someone named Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts.

A handful of seconds later, Butler entered the room.

“Yes Artemis?”

Artemis handed him the parchment. “Read this and tell me what you think.”

Butler did as he was asked, then looked up from the letter.

“This is either an elaborate joke or entirely legitimate. It’s not exactly that much of a stretch to go from fairies to wizards.”

“Perhaps.” Artemis paused, “We should wait for this ‘representative’ to show up.” He paused again, “And there’s always Mother and Juliet…they’ll need to be informed.”

Butler nodded. “That’s true.” The both looked up as they heard the sound of Juliet’s voice coming through the communicator.

“Artemis? There’s a woman at the door that wants to speak with you. She says her name is Minerva McGonagall.”

Artemis raised and eyebrow at Butler, who spoke, “Remarkably fast.”

“Artemis?” Juliet asked again, “Should I let her in?”

Picking up the communicator, Artemis spoke into it. “Yes Juliet, let her in. Tell her Butler and I will meet her in the library. Also, find mother and bring her there as well.” He stood up, “Well Butler, we shall see what this is all about.”

They left the study, went through a few halls and doors, and ended up in the library, a stern-faced black-haired woman in emerald green robes sitting in a chair.

“Deputy Headmistress McGonagall I presume?”

She nodded, “Just Professor will do, Master Fowl.”

Artemis and Butler sat down in chairs opposite McGonagall.

“Professor McGonagall. I understand that you are from ‘Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You must understand that I am naturally skeptical about this?”

“Of course.” She reached into her robes and withdrew a thin wooden stick. A wand? Artemis thought, “Would you like a demonstration?’

“By all means,” The prodigy that was Fowl replied. McGonagall nodded and lifted the wand, pointing at an expensive gold statuette on his mantelpiece.

Accio!” The statuette flew across the room and into her hands.

Artemis smirked, “Would you be willing to do that again, on an object of my choosing?”

She nodded, and Artemis pointed at a copy of Plato’s Republic and asked “Could you do that one?”

Nodding she pointed her wand at it, “Accio!” The book flew towards her, but as it closed in, she swooshed her wand and uttered another spell. “Wingardium Leviosa!” The book stopped in mid-flight and rose nearly up to the ceiling. “Movetus!” The book flew back to its spot on the shelf, settling nicely where it belonged.

“Satisfied?”

Artemis nodded, “Quite. Tell me more about this Hogwarts.”

At that point, Mrs. Fowl and Juliet entered the room. Artemis stood up and gestured at Professor McGonagall.

“Mother, Juliet; this is Professor McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which I’ve apparently been accepted into.”

Angeline Fowl frowned in incredulity; she opened her mouth, shut it, then opened it again and spoke. “Surely this is some kind of joke…” But she already knew the answer. Her son didn’t joke.

“No joke, Mrs. Fowl. I am a Professor at Hogwarts, which does in fact teach magic to its students. Your son has magical capability, and if he isn’t trained properly, it could lead to all sorts of problems. An untrained wizard will have no control over their powers, and that is not a pretty picture.”

Mrs. Fowl nodded, still somewhat in shock, and McGonagall turned to Artemis.

“What would you like to know about Hogwarts first? There is quite a bit to say about it.”

“Well, start with the organization of the school and classes and we shall work our way down from there. If you could tell me more about the rest of the wizards, the ones not in Hogwarts I mean, that would also be helpful.”

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

About 45 minutes later, Artemis had a rough understanding of the structure of Hogwarts and the Wizarding World in general. One interesting thing he had learned was that apparently there were wizards in the Fowl Family going back generations, although the magical gift did seem to skip two or three generations. Some, like Lord Hugo de Fole, were even quite famous in the Wizarding community.

As Professor McGonagall got up to leave, having just explained how to get to Diagon Alley in London, Artemis asked one more question.

“What about the postponement of my magical education? The letter mentioned it was ‘circumstances beyond the control of the School administration’.”

“It would probably be best if Professor Dumbledore spoke to you about that when you go to the castle on June 20th.” With that, she disappeared with a small ‘pop!’ sound.

A/N: I know, really short chapter. Lengths will vary in size, and updates may be slow, but I will stick with this.
