Chapter 1
I woke up to the sound of my loud alarm clock. Great, another day.
I ran my fingers through my desk trying to find the off button. After 5 minutes of fidgeting with the mess, I finally found it.
I heard my mom call from downstairs, “Time to get up Jenna! It’s 8:00!” She always exaggerated the time. It was really only 7:30.
I stepped out of the bed, slowly and lazily, I dragged myself downstairs. I smelt the aroma of the raisin bagels and orange juice, and I knew that meant my mom was having a good day.
As soon as I sat down I dropped my head onto the table as if I had lost the feeling in my head. “I don’t want to go to school.” I moaned.
I heard my dad come in with the load sound of his slippers he always wore.
“Well today you might want to go..” He said.
I lifted my head up.
He held up the crumpled up newspaper and put the front page in front of me.
The Jonas Brothers starting a ‘normal life.’
I put my head back against the table as if nothing had happened.
Who were the ‘Jonas Brothers’? Probably another weird celebrity group formed up of some stuck-up rich kids. I have never really heard about them but I did know that they were a popular group known by mostly teenage girls. And the best thing was that they were coming to my school.
Oh joy.
“Dad, I do not like them. I don’t even know them.” I mumbled to him. I glanced toward my mother who was pointing at my breakfast with her lips. I sat up and started to eat thinking about how my day was going to be.
After breakfast I ran up to my room to change and gather my stuff. Blue jeans and a regular t-shirt.
I looked at my watch and noticed that I had some time left before the crowd of girls would be stomping around the school waiting for the brothers. I walked up to my dads old brown Honda which he gave me after he got his new Volvo.
I could see the paint job already coming out of its place but I didn’t have such a big thing for cars. I unlocked the door and started the engine.
Crap. I turned the corner and saw a bunch of people huddled around the parking lot of the school. I slowly drove into the lot trying not to bump somebody and find a parking spot at the same time. It was too full. I gave up and drove to the end of the parking lot where no one usually parked. I got out and tried to get through the crowd.
What was so good about these ‘Jonas’ guys? Did they have good music? Were they cute? Probably, since I could see more than half of the girls in my school standing there.
Finally I got through the huge mess and walked into the courtyard and sat down on a tattered bench. I decided I would catch up on some of my algebra homework.
I felt a little shake and noticed that a girl sat down next to me. It was Liz. I’ve known her for a little while but we weren’t that close.
“Girl? What are you doing here?” she practically yelled.
“What? I’m finishing some work up. What’s wrong?” I whimpered.
“Do you know that any second the legendary JONAS BROTHERS are going to attend our school!?”
“Yes. I have heard that some boys are gonna come. What’s the big deal?”
“Where have you been? Living under a rock?”
I rolled my eyes.
“C’mon Jenna! Let’s go see if they’re really that cute in person.” She continued.
I stared at her for a second. “Did you hear anything I said? WHATS THE BIG DEAL?” I stared back at my paper and waited for her.
“Ok fine. Sit here and miss the 3 most beautiful boys ever walk to their classes.”
“You know there are a million people out there and I hate crowds!!”
Suddenly a huge noise coming from the front of the school grew louder with screaming and yelling.
They arrived.
I had just noticed that there were only a few people in the courtyard. But now they were running to see what all the commotion was about.
“See you later Jen!” She said while with the other few people.
I looked around and watched a gush of people surrounding something, or should I say some people.
I covered my ears until the noise declined. 3 young boys had walked into the courtyard. The first one who was most likely the oldest had dark curly hair. He was tall and lean and his face was smiling at all the girls trailing along behind them. The second one had also dark hair but unusually straight-wavy form. He too was smiling and laughing with all the young girls and some boys. The last one who looked my age was more muscular than his brothers. He had a curly ‘fro’, which looked bigger than the older one but in a good way. He was smiling too but in an awkward way looking away from the crowd. But overall they had a really nice style in clothing unlike most of the boys in our school who wore baggy clothes.
I looked away and packed my stuff as the blaring sound of the bell rang.
I ran to my normal class thinking I was late but as usual, always there early. I was always so panicked. Biology wasn’t hard for me considering that I was a straight-A student. Second hour, which was English honors, was a blur. Soon it was lunch.
I opened the door to the cafeteria and looked around. Surprisingly, I was the first one except for the few people at the lunch line. I sat at a table waiting for Liz who was probably with the new kids, or following them.
I opened my favorite book Angels and Demons and started to read. I then heard the door open and hear someone quickly walk in. I didn’t move. They then came to my table and sat down.
I looked up and saw a boy, who was wearing a strange hat, too big for him, and sunglasses. He half grinned at me then looked behind him. I could see some brown curls popping out of the loose hat. I didn’t recognize him.
A group of girls then came into the café and walked around looking for something instead of going in line.
“Quickly, pretend you’re talking to me!” He half whispers, snapping.
I panicked and started to say something at the top of my head, “Um…” I stuttered, “W-what classes do you have?”
“Ok…I have Integrated Science…um….” I could tell he was trying to think of something to say too. “Art..?” He stumbled out.
I just stared at him as he sat there looking behind me. I had realized the few girls who came in left.
A sudden sigh came from the mysterious boy who sat in front of me. He started to relax his body and finally he revealed himself. He took of the wool hat and glasses. I realized that he’d been hiding since nobody wears sunglasses inside. I felt stupid.
I looked at him again and realized that it was one of the brothers, the youngest one.
“Thanks.” He finally said. His voice was soft, and yet shy like me.
I nodded, having nothing to say.
We suddenly heard some voices coming from outside and saw that the students were coming in to have lunch.
He then put back his hat on and sped walked a few steps ahead. I watched as he left, heart thumping loudly. That happened every time a guy even came close to me or maybe even talk but that usually never happened.
I sat there staring blankly into space until I felt someone sit beside me. I quickly looked forward expecting to see him again but instead I saw the piercing hazel eyes of Liz. They were contrasting against her dark skin. She was breathing deeply.
“Oh my god Jenna…” taking a breath, “I just spent the last few periods trying to get just a glimpse of the Jonas Brothers…no luck.” She took another deep breath.
“Oh.” I said.
“I mean like I saw Joe and Kevin but it seemed like Nick was trying to hide.”
I knew she was talking about the boy I had just encountered.
“Oh.” I repeated.
“Hey. Snap out.” She said waving her hand in front of my face.
I finally came back to earth and shook my head. “Sorry, I’m just thinking about….my classes.”
“Ok? Well while you think I’m gonna go get some lunch. See you later.” She then walked away into the wave of students.
The bell startled me.
My last class was Reading. I had to take it since I wasn’t here for the first half of the year. I went into Class A14 and looked around. I saw the teacher writing on the board. They didn’t even notice me.
I went to sit on a desk in the corner near the window and waited for everyone to arrive. After the second bell rang the students came in at the same time.
I looked closely to see that the boy, Nick, was in this class as well.
He sat a seat 2 rows in front diagonally of me as everyone, every girl, tried to get to a seat next to him. Girls were talking loudly, arguing where to sit.
“Quiet!” The teacher yelled. “Get to a seat.”
The girls then sat on the nearest seat to them.
He continued, “As well all should know, we have a new student who is experiencing High School for the first time so please give him a warm welcome.”
“T’syeah we will!” Someone yelled in the back. People started giggling.
“Please stand….um…Nicholas Jonas.” He mumbled.
Nick stood up in a mature way as some girls sighed and giggled. He gave a half-smile then sat back down.
I looked away trying to avoid him and listen to the lesson.
When the teacher finally gave the instructions the room became full of talking, talking to him or trying to.
“So Nick… what do you think of this school so far?” A full figured girl who sat next to him said.
“What do you think of the GIRLS at this school?” Another girl asked him, giggling.
“It’s nice.” He came out with. He was staring down at his paper writing the lesson.
Every time he said something every girl would start laughing. He didn’t say anything funny.
After a few minutes the teacher got annoyed and told everyone, particulary the girls that if they started talking again he would write them a detention.
I sighed. Finally it was quiet. I looked up from my page and looked at Nick. I stared at him in disgust that he was already becoming popular and all the girls were all over him. He then glanced over in my direction and smiled. Not like before, more friendly and genuine. I quickly turned my head and continued writing.
