Second Chances; Chapter 1
Sara stood outside of the interrogation room, listening to what Grissom said to Doctor Lurie. When she heard him pretty much say that he loved her, she stopped breathing for a few seconds and she actually began to hope that he would take the chance to be with her. But that hope was crushed brutally as soon as he said that he could not risk his career for her. Lurie and his lawyer eventually left and they were soon followed by Brass. Grissom continued to sit there. Sara saw how tired and defeated he looked. Part of her wanted to go to him and try to offer some comfort, but a stronger part of her was so angry with him for thinking that she was not worth the risk. She hesitated in the shadow of the doorway. At long last he got up and left the room. He shut the door and nearly levitated when he saw her standing there.
“What are you doing here, Sara?” he asked.
“I…”
“Did you hear what I said?” he asked. She wanted to lie to him because she felt that her hopes would be crushed. But she had never lied to Grissom and she was not about to start.
“Yes,” she answered. He took her arm and guided her swiftly to his office. When they got there, he shut and locked the door and closed the blinds. She sat down in the chair in front of his desk and he sat behind it.
“Look, I know what you are going to say. You will say that we cannot be together because you are the supervisor and I work for you and our careers would be put into jeopardy,” she said before he had a chance to speak. She got up to leave, but he reached out and grabbed her hand. Sara turned around and looked into his eyes. His expression told her to stay. She sat back down.
“No, that is not what I was going to say. What I was going to do was ask you for a second chance. Will you give me one?”
Sara was breathless. Part of her was jumping to say yes, but another part was telling her to think rationally.
“I don’t know Grissom. I’m tired of being pulled in and pushed away by you. You allow me to get close, but the moment I see something that you do not want me to see, you immediately shut me out. A relationship needs to have some level of intimacy.”
She got up and left quickly before he could pull her back into her seat. Grissom sat there for a while thinking her words over. Was he really like how she painted him? He knew that whenever he hurt her, she was very quick to hide it. A tap on his door made him get up and unlock it. Brass stood outside. Grissom allowed him to come in.
“I saw Sara run out of here. What did you do?”
“I asked her for a second chance to be with her, but she was very skeptical about it.”
“Oh boy,” Brass said as he took a seat.
“I don’t know what to do Jim,” Grissom said.
“You have given her a lot of reasons to doubt if you really want her to be a part of your life.”
“I know and I hate missing the chances to be with her.”
“Gil, she loves you as much as you love her. When it comes to that you need to be willing to take the chance to be with her.”
“Jim, could you please talk with her?”
“Is there anything you want me to say?”
“Tell her…tell her…tell Sara that I will give this a lot of thought and if she is willing to give me the chance, then I am more than willing to take it.”
“How long do you need to think?”
“A few days at least.”
Brass wanted to tell his friend to not think and take the chance right now to be with Sara. But as soon as he saw how unhappy and exhausted Grissom was, the words died on his lips.
“All right, Gil. I will tell her.”
“Thanks Jim.”
Brass left and Grissom shut off the lights in his office. He stretched out on the couch and fell asleep. When he dreamed he dreamt of Sara.
