Footsteps…

Disclaimer: I do not own Digimon. The only things in this story I can call my own are the characters I create.

Footsteps…

The rain sheeted down, masking the dreary landscape in a dull grey haze as muted buildings towered over the deserted street. The blank expressionless faces of the silent constructs gazed through the gloom, all appearance of life drained from their surfaces by the downpour of water.

Coming closer…

The oppressive silence was broken by the irregular footfalls of the fleeing youth, the flat, dull pounding was broken by frequent splashes, as a figure rounded the corner, his staggering feet pounding the sidewalk, as he desperately ran from some unseen terror.

The boy began to slow his pace, glancing warily around at his surroundings as the noise of his frantic footfalls died, only to be replaced by the incessant noise of the rain droplets dancing on the pools of raging water that already covered the street. Cautious eyes flickered around the silent world around him as he revolved on the spot, carefully watching every dark window and shadowed doorway for any sign of danger.

Panting slightly, drained of oxygen, the concealed outline relaxed back against a wall, shielded from nonexistent eyes by the torrential rain. He ran his fingers exhaustedly through soaking hair, causing it too slick up in long spikes. Muttering quietly too himself, the sodden stranger began to rise back too his feet, only too freeze suddenly.

A low thrumming noise, barely discernable over the despairing weather, began to drift through the city. Ears twitched as the immobile figure snapped its attention to this new sound, muscles tensed as the boy shrank slowly into the shadows, while his eyes began to rocket around, desperately searching for the source of this phenomenon. The low hum grew deeper, resonating through the water soaked world. Any passing citizen would have dismissed it simply as the noise of power cables, charged with electricity, yet the boy began to quiver, his muscles beginning to shake from the tension of holding his ground.

It seemed that time had stopped, locked forever in the dreary gloom of the city, until a strange flicker of yellow, flashed through the darkness. Immediately the quaking figure of the boy broke into a run, splashing through the streets, his booted feet carrying him at a rate that would have shocked an onlooker with his sheer speed and desperation. No watchers appeared at the grimy windows to see the youths terrorised retreat however, and the boy was left to sprint through the shadows cast by the storming weather above.

However, no matter how hard he drove himself, limbs screaming with the return of ruthless action, the boy was still merely a boy. The glimmer of gold that had driven the youth from his temporary place of safety had resolved itself, shimmering into existence fully. The baleful gaze of the golden yellow eye swept the street before it, locking onto the rapidly diminishing outline. An enormous patch of blackness began to move, emerging from the swirling shadows and taking on definable shape, as a horrifically inhuman head began to turn, angling itself towards the doomed victim. A deep grumbling began to rise over the fluctuating noise of the humming, as the draconian figure locked on to its target.

Fire Blast!

The darkness was illuminated violently, as a pitiless blast of fire, rocketed from the creature’s maw, blazing directly at the tiny human figure. The boy turned, split seconds before the attack and glimpsed his assailant for the first time, as the glowing inferno was blasted towards him. The enormous black hided monster towered over the street, easily rising above the second row of windows of the building it was leaning around. Streaks of green were barely visible along the heavily muscled limb that grasped the dwelling, enormous steely claws crunching through the concrete with ease. There barely time too see this however as the imminent threat of the meteoric fireball occupied his attention. Without stopping to think, the youth dived to his left, landing heavily on the ground behind a car.

The terrific explosion behind him eradicated any concern about his bleeding knees, as bits of rubble and twisted metal rained around him. Glancing up, he could see the charred wreck of an unidentifiable vehicle smouldering several meters away, the glowing embers of the twisted ruin being quickly suppressed by the gloomy rain which swiftly reclaimed its hold over the darkened scene.

Adrenaline took control again, rushing through the terrified youth as he leapt to his feet. The meteoric fireball had missed him by a decent distance and left a good portion of the wraithlike street in ruins. Glancing back in shock, the dark outline of his pursuer could still be seen, however something bizarre was happening. The shadowed form was slowly fading away, its immense limbs sputtering into nothing like bad static on a computer monitor. With an eerie finality, the creature vanished into nothing, its presence imposing only in its absence. If another soul had been near at the time they would have heard the miraculously unharmed survivor whisper something quietly too himself.

Despite the swift departure of his assailant, the boy did not appear relieved, on the contrary, fear still ran through his obscured features. Turning tail, he continued to flee, still shrouded in the darkness thrown by the oppressive weather, leaving only the twisted carnage of the unexplainable attack and the silent memory of his single words for evidence he had ever passed.

‘Its not over yet…’
