Disclaimer: I don’t own Digimon. If you recognise something, its not mine.

Rio couldn’t sleep. In fairness, even if his mind had been clear he would have had trouble sleeping through Koromon’s snores anyway, but that wasn’t the problem this night. Koromon had told him a lot, much of which he had had great difficulty comprehending. Koromon had vaguely explained the nature of Digimon, telling him how they Digivolved when they had gathered enough energy to grow older. Apparently this was what had happened when he had eaten as Puttimon, gaining enough power to become Koromon. Rio hadn’t been able to get him to tell him everything, the little Digimon had been so busy eating he was physically unable to go into massive detail. He assumed that the blue puffball didn’t know much himself anyway, after all, he had only been born a few hours ago.

Rio shifted slightly, trying in vain to keep the circulation in his shoulder going. Koromon twisted slightly with him, the little critter had hopped straight onto his stomach after he had gotten into bed and had immediately gone to sleep. Rio had considered moving him, but for some reason he didn’t. He didn’t want to wake up the tiny eating machine, plus he had gotten strangely attached to him. Maybe they really were partners for life, as he had been cheerily guaranteed.

A pale light lit the ceiling as the standby light from his television emitted its comforting signal. His face fell slightly as his thoughts went back to the attack earlier that evening yet again. He still couldn’t explain what had happened. Koromon thought that it might have been a wild Digimon, but according to him, all other Digimon existed on a different plane of existence which he called the Digital world. It didn’t guarantee anything of course as Koromon himself was a Digimon and he was here in reality, but somehow Rio couldn’t see a massive fire breathing demon and the tiny powder puff coming from the same place. Still, he wanted to know what was going to happen, he wasn’t foolish enough to believe that it was the last time he was going to run into the creature and he wanted to have a better idea of what he was facing before that happened. His partner had vowed to protect him, but realistically speaking, Koromon was a foot high and the creature that had attacked him had been at least sixteen. And that was ignoring the fact it could blast meteors at people, what could his tiny new friend actually do in a situation like that?

Rio rolled over and sighed, he was sure he would have come up with something by that time. He probably had ages before anything like that happened.

That was when half the side of the apartment building exploded in a blaze of fire.

Tai stretched carefully, hearing his joints stretch from having laid down for too long. Darkness had fallen over the valley and the shimmering stars of the Digital world twinkled down cheerily at him. He smiled lightly at the pure sky, there was nothing more refreshing than this place, it was good to escape from his world, even if it was only for a short time. People just didn’t realise how much better life could be without the massive overcrowding and industrialisation back home. He breathed deep, tasting the fresh dew on the night air before turning his attention back to his task.

The temple below him was beginning to look a little worse for wear. Infermon had trampled down several more walls as he had patrolled the building. The place had a strange glow emanating from the stone walls which illuminated it so well that Tai had little difficulty making out what was going on. Occasional flickers could be seen arcing across the structure as petit bolts of electricity made connections and transferred data. Despite the damage and destruction Infermon had caused, the node still seemed to be operating at full capacity, from what Tai could see the damage was actually having a positive effect, changing the way the place transmitted information allowing the metallic bug creature to effect whatever scheme it was working on.

A tiny beep alerted him to a message from Izzy on his pager. He quickly flicked open the device and read Izzy’s update. The little computer genius had elected to monitor the situation from his lab. He had unlimited access to the school and could guarantee them complete privacy as Tai watched over Infermon. Sora had been told to go and inform their parents, despite her angry protests. Of course they would worry, but they all knew about the Digital world thanks mainly too the catastrophic Odaiba incident a few years back. They understood their children’s responsibility and supported them as well as they could.

The message was short and simple ‘Infermon still hacking web. Don’t engage. I want to see what he’s after.’ Tai grimaced. At this rate he would be sat around all night while Izzy played hide and go seek with that monster. He was itching to just destroy him and get home. An Infermon was guaranteed to be evil, there was no reasoning with the creatures. The last one they had met had taken over a vast proportion of the global network and fired intercontinental ballistic missiles directly at his home and several other countries. It could have caused wars to break out. Luckily Agumon had managed to stop him with seconds to spare and terminated his connection with the missiles, disarming them. As Tai saw it, it would be better to strike fast and hard and eliminate this one before it could become more of a threat. Or worse Digivolve… The last thing he needed was a mega level threat running around wreaking havoc after he had assured his friends he could handle the situation.

Low crunching noises told him Agumon was returning from his short patrol.

‘You find anything to eat buddy?’ Tai queried, a companionable smile spreading across his features. Agumon nodded firmly, which told Tai he had had more than enough. More than necessary knowing his orange skinned reptilian companion. He had a large appetite. Agumon laid down and rested his dinosaur like head on the verge of the hill alongside him.

‘Why don’t we just attack Tai? Why are we waiting around? I could just blast him now and then we could go home’ Agumon’s emerald green eye focussed on Tai. He was brave and extremely loyal, even for a Digimon, but tactical planning had never been his strong point.

‘Just wait Agumon. Izzy’s still figuring stuff out. We don’t want things too get complicated’ Agumon nodded, satisfied. He gazed down at the ambient structure below for a moment. His forehead furrowed in thought. The star dropped sky above them was flawless as a gentle breeze drifted past.

‘What could he be doing Tai?’ Agumon was restless, he didn’t like long waits, especially not before a fight. He preferred to dive right in, knowing his human companion would be right next to him all the way, giving him the strength to overcome his enemies.

Tai looked at his friend thoughtfully, ‘I just don’t know Agumon, but I’d bet we’ll find out real soon’

Rio leapt to his feet as the massive concussion swept through the building, blowing out his window as chunks of burning rubble and slivers of glass rained through the air. Koromon immediately leapt up onto his head alert and ready. Screams shattered the night as the other residents fled for the safest areas of their homes, shell shocked and terrified. Knees trembling slightly, Rio strode past his scarred television to the broken window, Koromon precariously balanced on his head, antennae waving in the powerful wind that swept rain into his room.

The explosion had been close, but luckily had hit the unoccupied flat next door, tearing away a vast section of wall, the shadowed interior of the building exposed to the unrelenting elements. The impact had sent tremors through the brick building, devastating nearby apartments, their windows exploding under the pressure. A steady thrumming was reverberating in the air, the floor… Rio could feel it rattling his teeth. His breath coming in horrified gasps, he spun, attention turning to the open street before his home. The unearthly rain was sapping away the colour of the world again but this time Rio saw his pursuer in all its ghastly might.

The creature was huge, at least as tall as a house, with heavily muscled limbs and long metallic claws. Poisonous green streaks ran across its pitch black body in vivid spiky streaks. An enormous heavy head turned, examining the street with its softly glowing golden eyes, the slitted pupils searching for a target. Rain spattered over its tough hide as the enormous dinosaur like entity turned slowly, its enormous maw opened wide revealing fangs the size of Rio’s forearms. A glowing flame began to appear, coagulating in the blackness of its throat, expanding into a fiery inferno, improbably contained for a split second. Rio yelled, recognising the movement and hurled himself backwards as the creature launched its attack.

Fire Blast!

A streak of flame blazed across the courtyard, impacting against the side of the building before detonating in a massive explosion of fire. Onlookers screamed in terror as they saw the monster’s attack and debris whistled to the ground, glowing embers curling through the air. A small child was screaming in fear as her home burned around her. Rio clambered to his feet, shaking violently, this creature had come for him, not for the others. He knew it in his soul. He walked forward furiously, he had been followed home and now his neighbours were suffering for it.

‘Rio get down!’ Koromon yelled, leaping up in front of him, barring his path with his tiny body. ‘I’m serious Rio! Don’t go out there! You’ll be killed! Darktyrannomon will eat you!’ Rio looked Koromon in the eye, vivid blue meeting shining gold. Koromon was bleeding slightly, he had been clipped by a flying piece of masonry it seemed. The thin bead of blood caused a painful pang in Rio’s heart, innocents were in pain.

‘I have to Koromon’ Rio sighed, ‘That things after me, it followed me here. If I don’t go out and face it then it’ll demolish the entire block and bury all the people who live here’ Koromon gazed up at him, his eyes shining slightly as tears began to form. ‘I’m sorry Koromon, but I have to go out there.’ He strode past the terrified Digimon and out onto the balcony. A powerful wind drove the dreary rain into his face and tousled his grit tangled hair as he faced the monolithic being before him. Darktyrannomon slowly looked up and spotted its target. Koromon had been right, it was a Digimon. The golden orbs shone through the darkness, so unlike his partners fierce, intelligent gaze. A flicker of evil traced through the catlike slits and the monster began to stride inexorably towards its victim…

--

Koromon’s eyes were forced shut, tears rolling down his face. He could here Darktyrannomon’s footsteps pounding, signifying its approach. Why was Rio going out there!? He wasn’t a Digimon, there was no way he could fight the enormous monster bearing down on him, he was going to be killed and there was nothing Koromon could do to protect his partner.

Golden eyes flashed open. He could help! Why was he sat crying with his back turned when his only friend was walking to his death? If Rio could be brave then so could he. Koromon spun on the spot and bounded outside onto the balcony where Rio stood paralysed with shock as Darktyrannomon loomed above him.

Koromon wasn’t afraid, his thoughts were dominated by a single imperative and his need to save his partner had banished all his fear, pushed all his doubts to the corners of his mind. Fearlessly he bounded up onto Rio’s shoulder and launched himself into the night air, power building up within and over spilling in a brilliant light.

The twisted device on Rio’s belt activated, its dead lifeless screen, glaring with energy as strength blazed through it from the shocked human and streaking through the ether, lending even more strength to the brave little Digimon. Rio could only gape in shock as the incandescent creature flew by his ear, changing even in mid air. The glow dissipated as fast as it had appeared leaving a glittering sapphire creature rocketing at incredible speed towards the stupefied monster before them.

Authors note: Hi, I know this fic has started pretty slowly, sorry about that but I have limited writing time and I prefer to finish as much as I can in one go and post it up rather than procrastinate until each chapters exciting and action packed. While this may mean some chapters are a little short or slow, it does mean it shouldn’t take very long at all for another one to appear, so hopefully this is okay with you readers.

Trust me, the story is going to get dramatic. Very dramatic. Like end of the world kind of drama, and there’s going to be some character death as well. I’m not going to say who, you’ll just have to keep reading and sending in reviews. A writer with reviews turns out to be a happy writer I’ve found and a happy writer writes faster.P

So watch this space and get some reviews in and prepare to read the Initial Breach War. It’s going to be followed by some pretty frantic catastrophe events straight after as well so don’t assume the story will be coming to a close, it really wont. Just the first episode really.

P.S The Koromon which follows Rio is a normal Koromon, just like Tai’s but as it has a different Digivolution line, I gave him a different colour. Digimon colour variants may pop up again and its just to differentiate between different characters.
