It Was Too Late
“Won’t you ever forgive me? My dearest love… I was… so foolish… But now, I have learned.” Olive green eyes closed, attempting to hide the immense pain that filled them.
“Kurama…”
“Kagome…” His voice came out in a whoosh as he looked around, searching for the ghostly voice. “Kagome, please…” The scarlet haired man repeated with more confidence.
“Kurama… I love you…”
Panic replaced the pain that was cradled in the man’s chest. “Please, Kagome, tell me where you are… Are you somewhere I can’t see-I-I need to see you again…” desperate jade eyes scanned the area he was in, a grassy field, his head very easily reaching above the tall grass that grew.
“I love you… Turn around…”
And he did what the voice told him to. Spinning in a circle, he strained his vision in an attempt to catch a glance of the spirit he was talking to. “…again, speak to me again… Again, I need to hear your voice.”
“Turn around… Close your eyes…”
Once again he followed the voice. Sighing, he basked in the feeling of her presence.
Next time… He told himself. Next time, I’ll be brave. I’ll be brave and push her out of the way… Out of the way…
“Close your eyes… we’ll be together soon…”
“I promise; I’ve learned my lesson… Next time I’ll take the hit for you. After all, I don’t die as easily as you.”
“Tsk, tsk… You haven’t learned at all…”
His eyes flew open, offence shining brightly, “Then tell me, what was supposed to be the lesson?”
A giggle resonated through the field.
“The lesson, Kurama dear, was not that you will save me next time, it is that love is eternal, and one day, you will return to me… Whether it be by reincarnation, or simply of our spirits meet in the afterworld… For, I will always love you…”
And almost immediately, everything clicked into place. “You died on purpose… to teach me this, did you not? As you always did, putting yourself in situations so that I would learn faster.”
“Indeed, love, I did.”
Bottle green eyes welled with tears. He should have been mad. But he wasn’t. To the contrary, he was rather pleased. “I shall see you soon then, Kagome-chan.”
“Indeed you will.”
Contented, the young man closed his eyes, “Thank you…” He smiled, “Sensei-chan.”
Sucking in a breath of air, he felt tears begin to stream down his cheeks, “I love you, and nothing will stop me from getting you back. I truly have learned my lesson this time… Though you had to tell me, I’ll be sure never to forget this lesson…”
And there he laid, seemingly serene, until the sun set, when he finally let go and walked away, his lovely Kagome on his mind, bringing him peace for the first time since her death.
“Ja matta ne, Kagome-chan… Goodbye”

MB: I hope that you liked it! It was 480 words (the story part, according to MS word.) I’m off to work on my new story (adopted from Youkai Goddess, who by the way, is an awesome author!), ‘Shattering Barrier.’
