Not Bad At All
Author’s Note: So this is dedicated to novearghpoots of live journal. She drew me a birthday picture for me when my bday was getting stupid dumb, so in return I asked if I can do anything back and she said “An Axel/Roxas or Xigbar/Demyx fic!” and I was like “I’ve done a lot of Axel/Roxas and well…I think it’d be a challenge!” so I took on the Xigbar and Demyx fic.
Idly, gloved fingers plucked away at singular strings and a voice could be heard as a tuning process began. Demyx sat on the floor, his sitar in his lap as he was tuning his instrument by ear. “Ah…” he vocalized and tried to match his sitar to his pitch. Using his middle finger, the blond plucked for a C note. “No…” he shook his head and tried again, “Ah…”
“What are you doing?”
Blue eyes blinked and Demyx tilted his head back. “Oh hey Xigbar!” the musician smiled.
“I can hear you all the way from down the hall. Now what are you doing?” the older man asked. He had this perplexed look on his face as he stared, confused, down at Demyx. The younger man just shrugged.
“I was tuning my sitar.” he answered, standing up. “It was out of tune since we went on that mission.” Demyx explained. “You know…swinging at heartless and stuff…”
“Maybe if you found a better weapon, it’d be more beneficial to the cause.” the gunner said. His one visible eye looked down at Demyx, a superior tone and posture overtaking him. The shorter of the two frowned.
“I like my sitar, thanks.”
“Whatever.” Xigbar sighed and scratched the side of his head, “Anyways, we got another mission to do.” he said and then tapped Demyx’s weapon of choice, “So tuning that thing would be pointless.”
Sighing, the blond nodded, “Yeah…it would. All right, where to this time?”
“Just outside of here. Xemnas wants us to scout the perimeters.” Xigbar said. “And I was hoping for some action.”
“Sounds good to me.” the musician smiled.
“…it would, wouldn’t it?” Xigbar said and turned on his heel. Demyx sighed. -No more fighting for today-. Regardless of wanting to fight or not, and at the risk of being deleted back into nothingness, Demyx followed the taller male, his footsteps light compared to the sharp steps Xigbar took.
While they walked, Demyx strummed on his sitar, playing a simple tune to lighten the mood. Xigbar looked sideways at the musician, a frowned appearing on the corners of his mouth. “Do you HAVE to play that now? I mean, you can play it when we’re hacking at things, but…”
“Oh ok,” Demyx said with a sigh, “You know, you’re not very much fun.”
“I’m not here for kicks and giggles, kid.” Xigbar said, scratching the back of his head in an unsure way.
“Well, you know, you can still have fun.” Demyx said, looking up at the taller man. Xigbar’s one visible eye looked pointedly at Demyx, a quirk of the brow.
“And what kind of fun?” he asked.
“Well…I guess you get your kicks from…shooting.” Demyx said, “So maybe…well…” Demyx paused. What could you do with shooting? There were a number of things that crossed Demyx’s mind, but none of them seemed…safe.
“Ok, while you ponder that, we got a mission to do.” Xigbar said, running forward a bit as his twin snipers appeared in his hands. Making a face, Demyx sighed and followed the older male, running towards the heartless that were lurking around outside.
Demyx didn’t fight much,; it wasn’t his forte. But Xigbar had to admit, when the musician did fight, he did it well; not bad, “I don’t know why you put yourself down so much. You’re not that bad.” he had commented when Demyx had killed off a Big Body.
“Well, you know. I'd just rather be doing other things.” Demyx said, waving a hand as if to dismiss the subject. “Beside…” Demyx smiled, “You seem like you got everything under control.” he said. Xigbar just laughed, aiming at Demyx with one of his guns. The water user paused, stiffening. “O-of course! You know…I- helping out is always fun?” Demyx said quickly, raising both hands in defense.
Xigbar just smirked ever so slightly, a simple lift of the corner of his mouth and fired. Demyx gasped, jumping at the sound of the gunfire, but no sort of pain came. “You talk too much.” Xigbar said, resting his gun on his shoulder. Demyx blinked and looked behind him as a Soldier heartless disappeared and released a captured heart.
“Eh-heh…” Demyx laughed nervously. “I-I knew you wouldn’t shoot me.” Demyx said.
“Sure you did.” Xigbar slurred. Demyx made a face and ran after the older man as he started to walk away. Xigbar let go of his weapons, the two guns disappearing before they hit the ground. “Well, it looks like everything is dead.” he commented.
“More or less…” Demyx shrugged. “I gotta get back to tuning now that we’re done.” Demyx said. Xigbar just rolled his eyes. Although, once Demyx had began to strum on his sitar, Xigbar smiled a bit. He had to admit, whenever the musician played, the tunes he picked were kind of catchy. “Hmm…hmmm…” Demyx hummed, plucking away at each string accordingly.
“What song is that? Is that the one you always play?” Xigbar asked.
“Huh?”
“Er…I mean…” Xigbar paused in his walking.
Demyx smiled, “So you do listen to when I play?” Demyx asked.
“Well, it’s kind of hard to ignore…” Xigbar said in defense. Demyx just smiled and laughed.
“Well, I really like this song. It’s the first thing I heard when I woke up.” he murmured, strumming at the sitar’s base. The strings vibrated, the sound waves bouncing off the shell of the instrument, creating a lovely sound. At first, Xigbar thought the sound the sitar made was annoying, but if played correctly and probably properly and expertly, the sound was bearable, and border-lined enjoyable.
“When you woke up?”
“Yeah, when I…I guess when I was created. This song was the first thing I heard. Maybe that’s why I like music so much.” Demyx said. Xigbar just laughed.
“All right, what ever you say.” the older man said. Demyx shook his head. He didn’t really care if Xigbar cared for his taste in things, but he had to chuckled when he saw Xigbar’s fingers twitch, tapping absently to the beat he was creating.
They continued to walk back towards what they called home. The looming white building offering no warm welcome. Dusks and other kinds of lower nobodies walked around, not really acknowledging Xigbar or Demyx’s presence. Demyx was still strumming, humming to the song he was playing and Xigbar caught himself a few times humming along as well.
“There you two are.” came the only feminine voice. “I was looking for you.”
“Hello Larxene.” Demyx greeted.
“What is it?” Xigbar asked.
“I get no hello?” Larxene asked, striking a mock hurt pose. Xigbar sighed, scratching the back of his head.
“Hello Larxene…” he muttered.
“Haha, what ever, as if a hello from you makes a difference.” she said rather bluntly. “But that’s besides the point. Haha, have I got news for you guys.” she giggled.
“What is it?” Demyx asked, letting his sitar disappear.
“Hehe, guess who left this morning?” she asked.
Xigbar and Demyx exchanged looks, “Who?” the blond male asked.
“Haha, Roxas!” she exclaimed, clapping her hands together.
“What?!” Demyx and Xigbar both gasped.
“What do you mean he left?” Demyx asked.
“I mean,” Larxene sighed, a hand on her hip, “he left the Organization.” she smiled. “And guess what else.” she smiled. She had such a sweet smile, but only those who knew her knew that that smiled meant no good. It usually meant she had something sadistic in mind.
“What…?” Xigbar asked.
“I’m not sure if I can take another surprise…” Demyx murmured.
“Marluxia is gathering a bunch of us to revolt against Xemnas.” she smiled sweetly.
“What?!” the two gasped again.
“Heh, isn’t it great?” she asked, shaking her head and shrugging her shoulders, “The Organization is falling apart. If I were you two, I’d choose sides, and quick.” she said, pointing at them.
“Who are you choosing?” Xigbar asked.
“Marluxia, of course.” she said. “I mean, I'd rather pick him than Xemnas.” she said with a small sneer. “If he can’t keep the keybearer’s nobody here, how can he even keep the keybearer himself?” she asked.
“And you think Marluxia can?” Xigbar asked.
“Heh, at least he’s trying something.” she said with a shrug, “But oh well! Who knows what fate has in store for us.?” she said and then disappeared, the sweet smile of hers imprinted in both minds.
Demyx frowned. “…so, Roxas is gone.”
“I wonder how Axel is taking it.” Xigbar murmured.
“They were best friends!” Demyx said quickly, “I wonder why he left…”
“Doesn’t matter,” Xigbar said, finding a seat near the bridge where random sniper nobodies floated around outside the entrance to the tower. “If Roxas is doing what I think he is, then our mission would be to finally make a move”, he said with a sigh.
“What do you mean?” Demyx asked. He sat down next to the older male, a curious look on his face.
“Think about it…” Xigbar said, leaning close to the water user, “Sora is Roxas’s somebody. Where would you go if you knew where your somebody was?” he asked.
Demyx thought for a minute, “To them.” he answered.
“Exactly.” Xigbar nodded, “Now we’re using our heads.” the sniper said. Demyx just frowned.
“That wasn’t nice.” he said.
“Yeah yeah…” Xigbar shrugged, laying back to rest. “So just let Larxene and Marluxia and whoever else rebel. I’m just gonna kick back and wait for my move.” he mumbled. Demyx just smiled, legs dangling and kicking over the edge of the bridge.
“Yeah, I’m sure we’ll hear news about how it went for them…” Demyx said.
Xigbar shrugged, slight worry making its way into his system. He wasn’t so much worried for Larxene or Marluxia, more so worried for his self. He was also worried because Roxas left. Now without the key blades, how were they going to collect more hearts? Sure, they could gather some here and there themselves, but Roxas was their main collector of hearts.
What now?
Demyx was humming, kicking his legs idly over the edge. The blond seemed to be in a good mood, despite news of Marluxia turning on them and Roxas leaving. -Does Demyx even worry about anything?- Xigbar thought. It didn’t seem like it, but maybe that was just a front he put up; who knew?
Xigbar blinked. Well, he put up a front too. At least, not around…oddly, Demyx. Well, that wasn’t correct either, he did put up a front, but he thought it was a different front than what he would put up around Luxord or Vexen.
Demyx was laid back, that he liked; he was cheerful and also easy to talk to. Sure, he might have been a little weird and silly, but Xigbar didn’t mind that too much. Every now and then, a little weird personality was a good change from dark, depressing ones. Albeit, Demyx did have a serious side. -Ok…not really…- Xigbar thought dully, his one eye closing shut to rest. If the blond did have a serious side, it took a lot of effort for Xigbar not to laugh.
In summary, Demyx was Demyx and Xigbar didn’t mind that truth too much. He was a cheerful guy, silly, a bit clueless -And let’s face it, he can’t fight to save his life, but can handle his own- Xigbar thought.
“Hmm, hmmm…” but Xigbar didn’t mind. He listened to Demyx hum a bit and it was vibrating right to where his heart would be. So he figured, he'd rather hear something accompany that voice.
Opening his one eye, he looked at Demyx and then closed his eye again. “Hey.” he called.
“Huh?” Demyx asked.
“…play that annoying instrument of yours for me, will ya?” he asked and Demyx just laughed.
“Sure thing.”
Nah, not bad at all.
-end-
So with that, let me ALSO explain how I went about this. I have no idea how these two would interact, nor do I have any idea how they really act. All I have are the few cut scenes they are in. Soooo, what I did was when I was writing, I thought of their voices. I thought how they would say this and that when they talk. So that’s how I wrote them, based on their voices. “Would we ever hear THAT come out of his mouth in his voice?” stuff like that.
Also many kudos to my beloved beta-er who totally schools me in my grammar xlollipoplovex!!
