So there I was at the duck pond, finally, and I couldn’t even think of anything to say. I had spent weeks attempting to build up the courage to ask my question, and now I couldn’t say it. So courage is a lie along with everything else. Well. What a day-brightener.

Back to the situation at hand. I opened my mouth, but only a strangled gurgle came out. God! Why couldn’t I talk? Six words. Six little pathetic words. That’s all I needed to say. That’s all I was asking for, six words and nothing more.

The ducks were starting to swim away now. I knew I had to take this chance or wait until next spring. I chose to finally voice my question now. I stared at a certain duck. She stared back at me. I gulped. She clicked her beak. Now was the time.

“Gabby,” I choked out, “Will you go out with me?”
