Title: The biggest decision of her life
Author: BellamortsdaughterNesha
Authors Notes: Yes, I’m updating so quickly I’m on a role. I think I just owe you guys one before I really don’t have time to write one because I’m on vacation or anything. I’m actually halfway through vacation but mom wanted to stop so I took the time to write this. It might be a little shorter than always, and now saying that I might write too much, oh well, blame it on the muse. Thanks for those wonderful reviews.
After a very refreshing bath Ingrid felt she could face anything, almost anything. She knew that the moment she opened the door and moved towards her bedroom, where Robert was resting, she would have to face one of the biggest decisions of her life. She loved him, there was no doubt of it now that she had accepted it in the middle of a public place, but did she have it in her to stay by his side through a divorce battle and hope that afterwards he would still want a future with her? Come on Ingrid, don’t be a chicken! ‘You’ve faced wars and political problems together or course you will be able to remain strong through a divorce.’ She thought, trying to give herself strength.
No matter how much she coached herself she couldn’t get over the nervous feeling that had settled on the base of her stomach and which made her hands tremble slightly. What was there to lose if she didn’t face this? Nothing; for she didn’t really have him at the moment. Yes they had confessed their feelings for each other in the middle of an airport, but that didn’t mean that they were a couple. What could she gain? Probably the love that she had always craved for from the man she loved. Somehow the balance was not equal and no matter the feelings that she got from it she already knew what her ultimate decision was going to be.
Taking a deep breath she twisted the door handle. “Time to face the music.” She whispered to herself before pulling the door open slowly. Just as she had predicted Robert was resting on her bed. Although his eyes were closed, with his arm over his forehead, Ingrid was very sure that he was not asleep. She padded softly over to the television set, which she turned on with the sound on mute, then padded towards her side of the bed.
She took a moment to observe him. He was probably exhausted if he had behaved for the past week like she had. Countless times she had found herself with her hand on the phone, ready to dial, only to let it go at the last minute. She had also found herself unable to sleep even when it was late at night and very obvious that she needed said sleep. She sat gingerly on the bed before swinging her legs over and resting them on the soft sheets and mattress. “Robert?” she asked softly almost hoping that he was really asleep so that they wouldn’t have to go into essentials at the moment.
“hmmm.” He answered. He moved his arm a little and popped open an eye. As soon as his blue eyes settled on her face his lips curled into a soft smile. “We need to talk.” He proceeded to inform her.
Usually when someone told her that it meant that they were breaking up but for some reason Ingrid was not more nervous at hearing those words. “I know Wienerish.” She said. With a little rustling of the sheets she was finally able to bury her body underneath them, her head resting on the pillow.
He remained silent, although he did move to lay on his side so that he could see her fully. Ingrid concentrated in breathing in and out slowly, trying not to panic. She had to stop the nervous giggle that threaded to come out of her lips; here she was nervous at being so close to him so they could have their ‘talk’ when a week ago they had almost made love in the same bed. Unable to bear the physical separation any longer, Robert moved to embrace her and pull her towards him. Ingrid easily cuddled up close forgetting for a moment about her nervous feelings. With his lips pressed to the side of her neck he finally started talking. “I am divorcing Annabelle.”
The nervous butterflies, which she had remained from naming before, sprung once more in her belly. “It’s good you’ve come to a decision.” She said, trying to sound interested but not overly enthusiastic, after all he was ending a marriage.
“Divorcing her was never a question,” he says trying to make sure that he understood that as soon as Annabelle had given him the papers he had accepted his faith. “I’m just worried about what it will do to the girls, and if I’ll be able to see them.”
Ingrid turned to look at him, her nose brushing with his forehead as she did so. “Robert of course you’ll be able to see them.” She told him quickly. “You are their father, and a damn good one at it.”
He neither nodded in agreement or refusal, he simply stared ahead for a couple of seconds before turning to look at her. “The question here is… if we have this relationship will you stand by me when I fight for the girls?”
And there it was; the biggest decision of her life. She knew that by asking her this he was not only asking if she would help him. She knew that in between lines he was asking her if she wanted to have a relationship with him and form a family with his. She hated in between the lines dialogues. “Are you asking me,” she started looking straight at him. “if I am willing to be your lover and a… possible mother figure to your children?”
He shook his head quickly. “No, I’m not asking that.” Ingrid’s heart fell all the way from her chest to her belly, right along with the butterflies. So if he wasn’t asking her that, then what was he asking? “I’m asking you to be my girlfriend, fiancée as soon as the divorce goes through, and if possible be a mother figure to Julie and Nahele.”
She swallowed forcibly. Could she be a mother figure? She was great at many things she had tried but she hadn’t ever tried to be a mother so she didn’t know how that would go. She decided to swerve a little away from her main preoccupation. “Wienerish,” she said, throwing in a soft giggle so that he knew that she wasn’t saying no outright. “Don’t you think that being engaged as soon as your divorce goes through is a little… fast?”
“When has that ever stopped you?” he asked knowing fully well that Ingrid was not someone to back down from a challenge, any challenge.
“This is something different Wienerish.” She said, hitting him lightly on the arm. “The fact is that if I do accept to this, if I try to become a mother figure, it will not only concern us but also Julie and Nahele and you know I love them, it would kill me to hurt them.”
He paused knowing that what she was saying was true. “How about we give us a try and when you feel that you are ready to commit to the girls, you tell me and I give you the ring.” Robert placed as a deal. “You told me to write my story and what I want to write has you as a protagonist Ingrid, it’s only a matter of you accepting it.”
Ingrid sighed. At least he knew that she was already committed to him and didn’t question it. It was true that she loved his daughters, and for many years had wished that they were hers instead of Annabelle’s. She blinked a couple of times, she too staring into space before turning to look at him with a soft and slightly unsure smile. “That sounds like a deal Wienerish.”
The biggest smile she had ever seen broke on his face and she felt proud to have been the cause for it. “So you are my girlfriend now?” he asked in an almost playful manner.
“Shut up Wienerish!” she said, hitting his arm once more before leaning forward and capturing his lips. They took their time in exploring each other’s bodies but at the end they were much too tired to consume their relationship. Silently they both decided that they should rest after having a week of no sleep and promised, with yet another passionate kiss, that as soon as their bodies were cooperating they would try and finish what was interrupted by Annabelle’s call.
They did not know that their story was once again about to be rewritten and that they would not have a say in the matter.
There it is! Believe me I’m going to be marinating another chapter to write and post up soon. I hate the ending of this one though, it seems so choppy but that’s the way that came out and I am no one to question it.
What do you think? Should I continue? Should I stop? Should I go watch the movie once more (not that I mind)?
Read and review even if you don’t like it…. Please!
Oh, I’ll dedicate the next chapter to those who can guess where I got the names of Robert’s girls.
