Adding to the Duo
“I am so tired,” muttered a second-year Rona.
Lorraine leaned against her favorite tree next to the lake. It was already March, and she couldn’t believe it. “I’m so happy school is almost out. I actually kind of want to go home. I want to see my dad.”
Rona nodded and said, “I want to see my grandpa. You know how sick he is right now.”
Lorraine stared at her friend sadly. “I’m sorry.”
Rona shrugged. “Don’t be, you didn’t do anything.”
“I know, but I love your grandpa. He’s so nice. Always has been,” said Lorraine.
“Right, well...I think I’m going to go in. I’m going to write a letter. It’s been a while,” said Rona. Her voice had quavered a bit and Lorraine knew she shouldn’t follow Rona in.
Lorraine watched her as she packed up all her books. “I think I’m going to finish this Transfiguration essay.”
“Merlin knows you’re going to need more work on it. Transfiguration isn’t really one of your best subjects,” said Rona as she stuffed her last book into her bag.
Lorraine giggled, “I know. Well, hopefully this essay will bring my grade up before the end of the year.”
“I wish you good luck,” joked Rona.
“Thanks. I’ll see you later,” said Lorraine as she went back to her essay.
“See you.”
Goodness, Lorraine was so tired. She looked over what she had already written. The essay was supposed to be a foot and a half. Lorraine had only gotten half a foot. It was a good thing that the essay was due in three more days, otherwise, she would get nowhere on it.
Lorraine looked at the surrounding grounds. It was starting to bloom again with flowers and trees were slowly gaining their leaves back. Whenever spring came it made her so tired.
Her eyes closed slowly, but not before she saw an image of Draco Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle walking towards her. Oh goodness. It was definitely time to leave.
“Hey, Barnes,” drawled Draco just as Lorraine started packing her stuff.
Lorraine ignored him. She had to get away. Who knew what he would do this time?
“Barnes!” Draco was still trying to get her attention. He was now standing over her, his shadow covering her whole entire body. She felt so small.
Lorraine still ignored him. This is what Rona said to do if she was never there for her. Just ignore him and maybe he’ll go away. Go away. Go away. Go away!
“Barnes, I’m talking to you,” said Draco as Lorraine stood up and put her bag on her shoulder.
Draco grabbed her bag. “I believe that I’m speaking to you, but you’re ignoring me. Look at me!”
Lorraine was looking at the ground, avoiding his gaze. What should she do? Her essay was in that bag. How she just wanted to disappear.
“Barnes...” warned Draco, holding her bag over the lake.
Lorraine watched her bags shadow ripple in the lakes reflection and slowly closed her eyes. When she opened them, she was looking at Draco.
“Good job...” said Draco.
Lorraine could only watch him as he slowly dropped her bag in her hand.
“Now, are you going to listen to me with respect?” asked Draco.
Lorraine could only stare into his eyes as they scanned her over. She knew he was trying to see what she would do next. All she had to do was something unexpected.
“Well?”
Crabbe and Goyle laughed. They were both blocking the way back to the castle by being behind her and on her side. The only way she would be able to get by was to go between Draco and the lake. There wasn’t much room, but she would have to do it.
Now, just wait until he’s least expecting it...
Lorraine jumped to move as quickly as she could between Draco and the lake, but it seemed that Draco had already assumed she was going to do that. He quickly moved his body to the side, but kept his foot in her pathway.
Lorraine felt something snag at her foot and she fell. Through her peripheral vision, she could see her books and papers flying everywhere...and Draco’s smirk.
She screamed. Lorraine hadn’t thought for a second about where she would land. Now she had figured it out. Lorraine had landed in the lake. She splashed around in a panic. She couldn’t swim!
Lorraine’s robes were now starting to pull her down into the lake, causing her to get a mouthful of water. She couldn’t breathe at all.
“Blimey, calm down!” screeched a girl’s voice.
Lorraine thought about listening. She had seen it in a bunch of movies where the person drowning didn’t listen and it just made it worse, but she was panicking and she didn’t want to calm down.
“Fine! I’ll just let you drown!” the voice said.
Lorraine looked around for the face of whoever was going to save her.
It was a Ravenclaw, Lorraine had seen her around the Common Room often. She had beautiful red hair that was very long and really sparkling blue eyes.
“Are you going to calm down now?” the girl asked her.
Lorraine didn’t answer. She looked at herself. She was holding onto the girls shoulders tightly as the girl just swam in place. How did she do that?
“Alright, come on. Geez, you’re the barmiest person I’ve ever met besides Draco,” she breathed heavily, carrying in Lorraine to the side of the lake.
Lorraine took a long gasping breath as she lay down on the soft, solid ground.
The girl that saved her giggled, “You okay?”
Lorraine could only nod as she clung to the ground. She stopped when she heard a taunting laugh.
“Can you really not swim, Barnes?” Draco had left the side of the lake and was now a few feet away, talking to Blaise Zabini.
Lorraine just ignored him as she scrambled around to pick up all of her books and papers and organize them back into her bag.
“Here, I’ll help.” The girl started picking up her ink bottles and quills. “My name is Scarlett Harwick, what’s yours?”
“Oh, I’m Lorraine Barnes,” Lorraine said as she took the stuff Scarlett had handed her.
They both stood up and Scarlett stuck out her wet hand.
“Well, I’m glad to have met you, fellow Ravenclaw. If you ever need me to help you with the prick over there...” she jerked her head back in Draco’s direction, causing her clinging, wet hair to fly off her face. “Then just call me over. I’ve beaten him up plenty of times.”
Lorraine could only smile as Scarlett shook her arm until it felt like taffy.
“Right...er...I’ve got to go. Last minute business to handle,” Scarlett said.
Lorraine watched her walk away.
“Hey Draco!” Scarlett called as she pushed up the sleeves of her robes.
“What?” Draco asked, showing how annoyed he was at Scarlett interrupting his conversation.
Scarlett smiled. “I just wanted to give you a good smack.”
Draco’s face fell, and then Scarlett immediately slapped him across the face.
Draco looked towards her in shock. “What was that for?”
“What do you think?” Scarlett asked as she punched him in the eye.
“Salazar Slytherin!” Draco cursed as he fell to the ground.
“Now, either you leave or I beat you up some more. Take your pick,” said Scarlett. She was leaning over him menacingly.
Draco scrambled to his feet in horror. “Scarlett, you’re so disgusting. How can you even stick up for her?”
He then disappeared into the castle with Crabbe and Goyle following him.
“Hey.” Blaise nodded in Scarlett’s direction. “How’s it been?”
“Great...I’m going to go. Talk to you later, Blaise.” Scarlett walked back towards Lorraine.
“That was great!” Lorraine gave her biggest smile.
“Oh, that was nothing. I’ve done worse,” said Scarlett, “Anyway, I’m going to go in.”
“Me too,” Lorraine said.
--
“Hey, Rona,” said Lorraine.
“Hullo Lorraine.” Rona looked up from the books spread out on the ground before her. “Hi, Scarlett.”
Scarlett smiled. “Hey.”
“Wait...you know each other?” asked Lorraine, “How come I was never introduced?”
Rona shrugged and said, “Well, we always hang out during Christmas. Her family always has these big parties that I get invited too because of my family’s blood status.”
Scarlett affirmed this.
“Oh,” said Lorraine.
“So guess what I just did?” Scarlett began to brag.
“What?” Rona asked.
“I just saved your friend from drowning and I beat up Draco,” she boasted.
Rona giggled, “You did?”
Scarlett nodded and sat down next to Rona and Lorraine.
“What happened?” asked Rona.
Scarlett smiled at Lorraine. “Well, Lorraine should probably start first because I don’t know what Draco was saying to her.”
Lorraine blushed. This was such an embarrassing story, but she was going to tell them. Lorraine decided she owed it to her two best friends.
A/N: This is a little one-shot so I could show you what Scarlett had done exactly to help Lorraine. I thought everyone might want to see how they became a trio. I hope that what Scarlett did seems like what she would do. So – like it? Hate it? Tell me what you think! Reviews are the only way I know if you think I should continue!
