A/N: This is completely NOT what I am used to writing. If you’ve read my other stories, you already know that. After unsuccessfully wracking my brain for a creative, angsty idea, I’ve decided to try my hand at fluff. If I’m no good at it, let me know and I’ll do us all a favor and stop.
Chapter One
BPOV
“He’s a sleaze!” Alice said to Rosalie, incredulous.
“Obviously he’s a sleaze…but he’s a sexy sleaze,” Rosalie countered. “I don’t want to marry the guy, Alice. He just look like he could be fun.”
I sat there and wondered how I’d gotten suckered into this.
A booze cruise.
The title alone should have kept me away. It would have kept me away. Unfortunately, the only thing more appalling than a booze cruise was wasted money. Alice and Rosalie took advantage of my quirk and bought my ticket in advance.
“If you want him go get him,” I sighed, getting fed up with the debate. We all knew Rosalie could have any man she approached.
After two of our three hour drunken tour, the guy she was eyeing turned out to be this highlight of our little cruise. He was hot, and if nothing else very entertaining to watch.
“Okay,” said Rosalie, shaking out her shiny, golden mane, “I’m going in.” She squared her shoulders and walked over to the hot sleaze.
“He’s got a body, anyway,” Alice mumbled to me.
She was right. The guy had to be some kind of weight lifter or something.
Alice ran a hand through her short black pixie cut and started rummaging through her huge bag.
“Why did you bring that thing and what could you have possibly filled it with?” I asked, leaning against the railing of the boat.
“Make up, a brush, my favorite Chanel scarf, hand sanitizer, a few shampoos, my phone, my travel toothbrush, some of that fabulous organic soap I discovered last month—“
“Why?” I cut her off. This could go on forever, she was like Mary Poppins with that bag. “It’s a three hour booze cruise, I didn’t even bring my wallet.”
“Two reasons,” Alice said, putting her nose in the air. “First, I had to at least consider the fact that my soul mate may be on this boat. What if he wanted to whisk me away tonight and I wasn’t prepared? Second, I’m no fool. I’ve seen Gilligan’s Island.”
I stared at her.
“I think you get a little more neurotic every day,” I said.
“Hardly. I’m practical…and you might be thanking me later.”
“Doubt it.”
“Well, don’t come looking for my shampoo when we’re stranded on some filthy island.”
“Deal,” I said.
Suddenly, there was a small commotion coming from where Rosalie and the object of her desire were standing. Alice and I craned our necks to see what was going on. I heard the very familiar sounds of Rosalie shouting, then we watched her wind her hand back slap the sexy sleaze across the face.
“Wow,” Alice said calmly. “Foreplay already.”
“She must really like him. That was less than ten minutes,” I mused.
We weren’t shocked. Rosalie usually ended up slapping most men before she slept with them. Bantering turned her on, but this was quick, even for her.
Alice and I got comfortable against the railing, watching the show and offering each other running commentary.
“Uh oh, he’s laughing,” Alice said.
“There’s no way she’s going to wait another hour,” I said.
“I hope they go back to his place. I don’t feel like running into Rose’s ‘company’ in the morning,” Alice said.
“She’s really very good at this,” I said, watching as the guy wound his huge arms around Rosalie’s waist. We watched her feign being offended. God, she liked this guy.
Out of nowhere, or maybe heaven, the most beautiful man I have ever seen sauntered over to Rosalie and the sexy sleaze. I actually gasped out of pure lust. How had I missed this over the last two hours? I let my eyes slowly explore him.
He wore a white button down shirt, the top two buttons were open and the cuffs had been rolled up to his mid forearms. He had thick, disheveled hair that looked almost black in the dim lights twinkling on
the side of the boat. His jaw was strong and square and on his face were the most beautiful lips I had ever seen. I wanted to see his eyes, but they were downcast. Instead, I saw dark, heavy lashes, hiding what I just knew would be gorgeous eyes.
Behind me, my hands clenched the rail. Never had just looking at a complete stranger made my knees go weak. In fact, I don’t believe my knees had ever gone weak in reaction to anybody before. I stared at him as he approached Rosalie.
Of course.
His face broke into a slow, lazy grin. My heart flipped.
“Now him,” Alice said, “I wouldn’t mind running into in the morning.”
I nodded slowly and sighed.
I didn’t stand a chance if Alice had set her sights on him, not that I had a chance in the first place, anyway. This guy was beyond my wildest dreams.
“Gah. Who knew a blue T-shirt could be so…sexy?” Alice asked, her voice trance like.
“I know,” I said.
We both stared ahead in silence, beholding the beauty.
Then something clicked in my hazy lust filled mind.
“He’s wearing white,” I said.
“Huh,” Alice uttered absently, her eyes still focused straight ahead.
“He’s not in blue. He’s in white,” I said.
Tiny Alice stood on her tiptoes and squinted.
“Has his beauty made you color blind? I’m staring at his chest as I speak. It’s definitely navy blue,” she said.
I tore my eyes away from the God and did a quick scan. Standing right next to him was an attractive blonde guy with a blue shirt on. I mentally sighed in relief, then felt like a fool that I thought it mattered at all.
“He’s ok,” I said, “but have you seen that?” I asked pointing to the guy in white.
“Yeah, yeah. He’s kind of cute,” she murmured, taking a quick glance, but her eyes immediately went back to the guy in blue. “I. Want. Him,” she said, determination blazing in her eyes. If I’d have known this was going to be the Love Boat, I would’ve wasted the money.
Just then, Rosalie turned around and waved us over. Alice pushed herself from the railing and held her humongous bag in front of my face.
“Soul mate. Practical. Don’t doubt me,” she said, smugly. Then, she grabbed my elbow and started tugging me forward. I took a deep breath and let myself be led by Alice.
Just as we parted through the crowd, a strong wind whipped through and blew Alice’s yellow, frilly sundress up, revealing practically all of Alice. She yelped and quickly caught her skirt, tugging it down, but not before she gave a surprise peep show. The guy in the blue shirt saw it all. His jaw dropped, then quickly shut. I saw his back straighten and his chest puff out slightly.
Great.
I was solo for the rest of the night.
If the dress incident had happened to me, I would’ve dropped dead of an embarrassment overdose. But, as long as I’d known Alice, which was forever, I’d never seen her embarrassed. In true Alice fashion, she tossed her head back and laughed, sending the exhilarating sound echoing above the buzz of surrounding conversations. The expression on Blue T-shirts face turned from one of lust to one of awe.
Fabulous.
At this rate, I’d be solo all weekend.
Staggering behind Alice, I pulled on the hem of the white tank top I was wearing.
“Stop fidgeting,” Alice hissed at me. Sheesh, did she have eyes on the back of her head?
I couldn’t help fidgeting, before we even reached the gorgeous man in white, I was already feeling self conscious and inadequate. My beauty queen friends were doing nothing to ease my nerves.
When we reached Rose, she grabbed both Alice and I by the wrist and pulled us in to her little group of beautiful people.
“This is Jasper,” she said, pointing to Alice’s soul mate. He nodded, but only looked at Alice. “And Edward,” she said, turning to my personal God. His head was partially lowered and he looked up at us through his thick dark lashes and gave a half grin. My heart thumped and I swallowed hard. “This is Bella and Alice,” Rosalie continued, gesturing to us. “And this…” she said, glaring at the sexy sleaze, “is the biggest jackass I’ve ever encountered.”
Alice and I knew this translated to ‘I’ve never been more attracted to anyone else in my life.’ Jasper and Edward both snickered at Rosalie’s introduction, but didn’t seem shocked. Apparently, sexy sleaze got this kind of intro frequently.
“It’s Emmett,” sleaze said with a wide, infectious grin. He reached out a big hand to both Alice and I. “And Rosalie, stop talking about me like that, you’re turning me on.”
Oh, Lord, she really did meet her soul mate.
“You’re disgusting,” Rosalie sneered.
“You’re conceited,” he shot back, leaning in toward her. I was impressed. Most men were intimidated by Rose.
“Pig,” she spat.
“Prude.”
They were so close together Rosalie had to tilt her head back to glare up at him. He towered above her, staring back. Without another word, Rosalie grabbed the sleeve of his shirt and marched him off, disappearing into the crowd.
“Jesus,” Edward breathed. “It’s a female Emmett.”
The three drinks I had earlier somehow gave me courage to speak.
“Ah, you have no idea. That was foreplay for Rosalie.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Emmett was past foreplay already,” Jasper cracked, earning a laugh from all of us. For the first time, I really looked at him and noticed a black messenger bag strap wrapped around his chest.
“I see you don’t travel lightly, either,” I said to him.
“I was a cub scout,” he shrugged. “Always be prepared.”
“I couldn’t agree more,” Alice said, holding up her bag. Their eyes locked and I felt like a voyeur watching them.
“What the hell do you have in there? The kitchen sink?” Edward asked, gaping at Alice’s bag. Alice opened her mouth to defend herself but I cut her off.
“Don’t ask, it’s entirely possible.”
“Hey! There is no plumbing in my bag. It’s Balenciaga! Besides, your friend Jasper here has quite a load, too.”
“Not as much as you,” Jasper said, grinning at Alice.
Alice grabbed him by the hand and walked him to a nearby table. Curious, Edward and I followed. Alice opened her purse and let the contents spill on the table. Jasper followed her lead and emptied his bag, as well.
“Ok, the toothbrush, I can maybe understand, but this thing?” Edward asked, plucking something out from Alice’s pile. She snatched it from his hand.
“It’s a loofah. It’s for exfoliating and it’s necessary,” she said. Jasper cocked his head in consideration, then nodded in agreement with Alice.
“Ok, a compass? And what the hell is this?” I asked, pointing to a contraption in Jasper’s pile.
“A water purifier,” Alice and Jasper said at the same time.
“And you don’t find this all a bit…excessive?” I asked.
“No,” Jasper said.
“Okay,” I said, putting my palms in the air.
Jasper and Alice continued to compare items, inching a bit closer to each other the entire time. After three minutes, I felt like an intruder. I backed up then turned around. Alice hadn’t noticed I retreated. I went to make my way back to the rail.
Half way there, I felt a tug on the back of my shirt.
“Hey—“ I said, spinning around. But then I lost my words. Edward was grinning back at me.
I froze.
“You’re seriously not going to leave me with all that craziness, are you?” he asked. I was floored. He, the God, followed me?
“Oh, I er, uh.” A coherent sentence would’ve been nice, but my brain could not form one. Not when he was…in front of me, looking at me with those deep emerald eyes. And especially not when I noticed again the sharp curve of his jaw. And really not when a lock of his thick hair flopped lazily into his right eye.
“Do you booze cruise often,” he asked.
“God, no.” I immediately regretted saying it. Obviously, if he was here, this was the type of thing he enjoyed. To my surprise, he laughed.
“Didn’t think so. You don’t strike me as a booze cruise kind of girl. It’s not my thing either,” he sighed. “I guess you could say I was forced.”
“Me, too,” I said, relieved, because I had managed to not offend him so far and also because he wasn’t a booze cruise type of guy.
“Ah, your friends are fans of the annual Bon Voyage bash, too?” he asked.
“What,” I asked, confused.
“Bon Voyage tour? You do realize what this is, right?” he asked slowly.
“I thought I did, but I think I’ve been lied to,” I said, my eyes narrowing on Alice, across the boat.
“Please, enlighten me,” I said, weary.
“Well, normally, this thing does three hour tours or whatever. But, every year the boat undergoes routine maintenance for three months, so they do this big last hurrah thing.”
“Last hurrah?”
“Well, you aren’t going to like this,” he said, grinning. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I couldn’t get properly mad if I was looking at him.
“Okay, I think I’m prepared. Shoot.”
“We’ll be docking in…” he glanced at his watch. “A half hour.”
“Oh, I knew that.”
“No, we’ll be docking at a small island, for the party.”
“Party?”
“The Bon Voyage party,” he said patiently.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I’ll kill them,” I said. Edward laughed.
“I’m not joking.”
He laughed harder.
“What about you? You said this isn’t your scene, either.”
“It’s not. I’m resigned. We do this every year; after the third one I finally figured out it’s easier not to fight it. My brother loves this shit.”
“Your brother?” I asked.
“Emmett,” he said. I was shocked.
“I cannot believe you two share genetic material,” I said.
“Neither can I,” he said.
Our eyes met, and I was hypnotized. My knees started to tremble again and I knew I should look away, but I couldn’t. It was really going to suck when this guy came to his senses and found something better to do.
Abruptly, something frizzy and hot pink came zooming at us.
“Shit,” Edward said, under his breath. Before I could ask what was going on, he was holding my hand and standing much closer to me.
Too much contact!
I thought I was going to pass out. The only thing keeping me awake was the pounding of my heart. It couldn’t be normal to be so strong and loud.
“Edward! There you are!” screeched the frizz ball in a hot pink tube dress. She smelled like cheap perfume and liquor. Alice would’ve been offended.
“Oh, hi, er…” Edward said, searching his mind for her name.
“Jessica,” she reminded him, a bit annoyed.
“Right. Jessica.”
“Anyway, we must’ve lost each other in the crowd! But, hey, no worries, I found you,” she beamed.
“You sure did,” he said, flatly.
“You’re very silly, Edward,” she said, winking.
“Right. Anyway, Jessica, this is my girlfriend. Remember I told you all about her?” he said, pointedly.
I had no idea what was going on, but I was more than willing to accept that title. Edward tugged my hand, pulling me closer to him. His smell was intoxicating, cool and masculine, but he didn’t reek of cologne. It was a refreshing change.
I flashed a wide smile and held up our clasped hands.
“That’s me. Edward’s girlfriend,” I said, for lack of anything better.
“Well. Oh.” Jessica said, but she didn’t move. For a moment, I thought she might cry. Then a look of determination crossed her fake tanned face.
“How cute! How long have you two been an item?” she asked. The insincerity in her shrill voice made me smug.
“Oh, geez, it seems like forever, doesn’t it, baby?” I asked sweetly, looking up at Edward. He looked down at me grateful and relieved.
“Forever,” he agreed.
“Well…I hope you two are happy together…forever,” Jessica said, then stalked off, tugging at the hem of her dress.
“I don’t think she meant that at all!” I said, mildly offended, until I remembered I had no reason to be.
Edward snorted.
“I don’t think so either. Hey, thanks for that. She’s been stalking me all night. She even made, uh, ‘plans’ for the island, despite the fact that I told her repeatedly I had a girlfriend.”
“Oh, no problem,” I choked out. It stung my stomach when he mentioned his girlfriend, though it shouldn’t have. I didn’t even know this guy. “I’m sure your girlfriend will appreciate my help as well,” I forced a laugh.
“She definitely would. If she existed,” he said, a coy grin on his face.
“What?”
“I don’t have a girlfriend,” he shrugged. “It seemed like the only thing that would work…except it didn’t. Not until my ‘girlfriend’ materialized, anyway,” he said.
My pulse raced and I knew my face was turning red. He mistook my reaction for something else.
“Oh, god, I’m sorry,” he said dropping my hand and taking a step back. “I’ve been hanging on to you.”
“It’s okay,” I said quickly, wishing foolishly he’d take my hand again. Really, it was more than okay. Hang on to me, Edward.
“Bella,” Edward said out loud, but he didn’t have any follow up words. He looked like he was contemplating. Before I could ask him what about, I saw Alice and Jasper, arm in arm, both toting their bulging bags, headed for us.
“Look,” Alice squealed, pointing. “We’re about to dock.”
I glared at her.
“Oh…Bella. Get over it,” she said, not even meeting my gaze.
I glanced at Edward, who had turned to look at the island. The breeze blew his hair in a hundred different directions and the collar of his crisp white shirt half turned up. The moonlight created dark shadows around his cheekbones and under his eyes.
He was stunning.
“I’m over it,” I murmured, so quietly I doubt anyone heard me at all.
