Ok, Chapter 2. Sorry it's short, I'm still deciding where to go with this... Reviews inspire me, so help me decide: Should the Doctor and Donna end up in Z&Cs parallel universe, or in Pete's World making it a very short story?
They arrived with a thump and opened the door to the PU. Stepping out, Zack and Cody stretched, and then stared at the two strangers next to Arwin. The redhead in the brown dress and leggings was pestering a brown pinstriped man in a trenchcoat- the Doctor, they guessed- about what was going on, but the Doctor was just standing next to Arwin, both of them hovering over some blueprints, chatting back and forth.
Cody cleared his throat to let the rest of the room know they were back.
“Oh, there you are!” Arwin smiled, turning around. “See, here it is.”
“Huh, kinda’ small…” The Doctor mumbled to himself. The redhead glared at him, punching him in the arm. “Ow! I’m sorry, it’s very… nice.” The Doctor revised his earlier statement. The redhead humphed, a look of disproval on her face.
“Who are you two?” Cody asked.
“I’m the Doctor and this is Donna.” The Doctor replied, motioning to the redhead lady. Quickly changing the subject to avoid anymore questions, he turned to Arwin. “So, why not show me how this thing works?”
“Why are you so interested in using the PU?” Cody intruded.
“I’ve…got a friend waiting for me to get her back.” The Doctor said, almost all in one breath. He rubbed the back of his neck, adding, “Can’t you two- go somewhere…else?”
“Hey. These two are my friends, and I said they can stay!” Arwin complained.
“Right.” The Doctor sighed.
“Doctor, how is this gonna help us? We’ve got the TARDIS.” Donna motioned somewhere outside the basement where the two had parked it to avoid questions.
“Yea, but the TARDIS can’t travel between universes. Well, she can, it’s just she gets a bit…broken.” The Doctor added.
“And why would we want to go to another universe’s world with all the ones out in this universe?”
“Because…I want to- don’t you think it’d be fun?”
“Doctor…”
“Ok,” He lowered his voice, whispering in Donna’s ear. “This is our way back to Rose.” He pulled back, grinning wider than humanly possible.
“Rose?” Donna shouted, hugging her friend.
“Oh yes.” The Doctor grinned even wider. He turned to Arwin, suddenly serious. “So, how does this thing work?” He took off his glasses he had put on when he was looking at the blueprints.
“It punches a ship-sized hole in the walls between dimensions, letting the ship get through.” Arwin simplified.
The Doctor’s face grew harsh. “It does what?”
“Is that bad?”
“You’re worse than Pete…” The Doctor mumbled before explaining. “You can’t do that. You punch a hole, the whole world gets cracked, you do it again… and again… the world splinters and shatters like glass.”
“So that’s a bad thing?” Arwin asked.
“Yea, wrench boy. It’s a bad thing.” Donna stepped in. The Doctor pulled her back, scolding her.
“Donna.”
“Yea?”
“No.”
Donna sighed. “Fine, spaceman.” She smiled at him.
“Ohoh! Are you from space?” Arwin smiled like a child.
“Yup.” The Doctor replied after a thoughtful pause.
“Cool.” Zack nodded, mirroring Arwin’s expression.
Cody was unimpressed. “If you’re an alien, then how come you look like a human?”
“It helps me blend in.” The Doctor stated. “I like to come to earth, and it doesn’t help if I look like a Gelth. People’d go nuts and run away.”
“Sure…” Cody replied, not sure.
“Well.” The Doctor broke the silence, serious once again. “You can’t use that thing anymore. These two universes are already harmed enough from Canary Wharf, we don’t need anymore crossings, got it?”
“Oh, come on, how much harm can one ship do?” Arwin defended his piece of work.
“Lots.” The Doctor replied. He whipped out his sonic and stormed into the PU, and with a small explostion and burst of sparks, the machine was broken. “Forget about me, I was never here, got it?” He waved his sonic just to prove his point. “And, don’t try to fix it, ok? I’ll find out, and the result won’t be good.” And with that he turned on his heels and grabbed Donna, dragging her out of there.
“That was weird.” Arwin said, stunned.
“Yea.” Zack sighed. “But the kids in class are never gonna believe that I met an alien!” He stated before running to go find a phone.
“He wasn’t an alien!” Cody yelled after his twin.
“Why’d you break it?” Donna asked the Doctor, once they got back to the TARDIS. "The machine, I mean. Did you decide it was too dangerous? Have you given up on Rose?"
“Before I broke it, I scanned the computer readouts. I’m gonna upload them onto the TARDIS and see how it works and then I’ll find a way to rip open reality and go get the Tyer family back!” He grinned. Donna was glad to see the bounce back in his step, all over a girl she had only heard about, but Donna was glad for her friend.
The Doctor snapped his fingers and the TARDIS opened. “Never going to be able to get over that.” He smiled back to his friend as the two of them walked into the ship. The TARDIS was purring, and the lighting was calm. He patted one of the branch-like objects in his ship and whispered to it in his native tongue, the one lauguage the TARDIS never bothered to translate.
Donna stood in amazement, listening to the beautiful sounds rolling out of the Doctor’s mouth. She closed her eyes and listened to the music of it.
It only lasted for a few seconds, because then the Doctor was suddenly serous, running about the console, flicking a switch here and rolling a wheel here. His hands flew around the console, only stopping once to thrust the sonic into a hole that had appeared out of nowhere.
“Off we go!” The Doctor smiled, pulling the handbrake down.
