Chapter 2—Smells Like Teen Spirit
Beep, Beep, Beep! Ugh, first day of school at Forks High. I got up out of bed and changed into a comfortable shirt and hoodie with jeans. It was a lot colder up here than in Alabama. I really wasn’t looking forward to starting a new school because of all the whispers of “look there’s the new girl.”
I went downstairs and saw that mom wasn’t up yet. I guess her shift at the hospital wasn’t an early one. I went into the kitchen and found my two sisters already eating breakfast. I wasn’t a big morning person and never was all that hungry in the morning. I usually just grabbed an energy bar.
“We should get going; we don’t want to be late.” Michelle suggested.
“Oh yeah cuz that would be bad.” I said.
We got into our 1967 Shelby Ford Mustang GT 500, a gift from our father a year before he died. We arrived early and went into the office to get our schedules. Mel and I went towards Junior Hall while Michelle went towards Sophomore Hall.
Luckily, Melinda and I had about half of our classes together. Once we finished at our lockers, we went in search for our first class, World History. Thankfully we got there before the bell rang and that was when the stares began. Did I mention that I hated being the center of attention?
The teacher came in at just the right time and told us where to sit. I took my spot and waited for class to start.
“Hey, I’m Sarah. You knew here? Oh of course you are. I just wanted to say Welcome to Forks.” One girl next to me said. I could barely understand it though since she talked so fast. So I just smiled and thought only six more classes after this and then freedom.
Once school was over I went towards where we had parked and waited for Michelle and Melinda. I looked around the school parking lot and saw the typical high school stereotypes; the geeks, the stoners, the jocks, the populars, and the sexually active band geeks who were all currently making out. It was one of those things that you were disgusted by but also couldn’t look away from. After about a minute, I looked away and saw Mel and Michelle walking towards me laughing.
“Hey what’s up?” I asked them.
“I think I am going to love it here!” Michelle exclaimed.
“Why?” I asked.
“She’s got a date with some senior to a party this weekend and I have been trying to tell her that it was a bad idea to agree to go because he probably only wants one thing from her. I mean why else would a senior ask a sophomore out?” Melinda explained.
“Because he likes me and I’m going. I’m sick of being the only one who hasn’t been out on an alone date.” Michelle whined.
“Ha, good luck getting mom to say yes to that. You know how she is with us dating.” I said. Michelle said nothing but got in the backseat and pouted all the way home.
Once we got home I went upstairs to start on my homework, even though it was Friday. Why a school would have a first day on a Friday, I don’t know. I was almost through with reading the first chapter in The Great Gatsby when Mel came in and told me about a party or bonfire in her words that was going on at the local reservation.
I’m not the most outgoing person to say the least, but after about ten minutes of begging from Melinda I decided to go. I didn’t know what to wear, but when I went to my window to see how cold it was outside I quickly decided that the outfit that I was already wearing was good enough. All I had to do was just my hair and make-up.
“MADDISON, LET’S GO!” Melinda yelled at me from downstairs.
As I walked down the stairs and towards the living room I heard Michelle whining to Mom.
“Why can’t you see that I’m old enough to go out with them?” she said.
“Michelle, no you aren’t. You are only 15 years old. You know the rule that your father and I set. No going out alone without parents around until you’re 16. Both of the girls had to wait and you will too.” Mom answered.
“No they didn’t. They always went out alone.” Michelle said. Oh crap!
“What?” Mom asked staring at both of us.
“Bye Mom, we’ll be back by eleven. Love you both.” Mel and I said at the same time and ran out the door before Mom could figure anything out and start yelling.
I drove while Melinda told me directions from Mapquest. I will admit this, Forks does have beautiful trees. I know that may sound weird, but for some reason I like trees and how they look.
When we arrived at La Push, I could already hear the music that was coming from the bonfire.
“Rule in place?” Melinda asked. Ever since we started going to parties alone, we had a rule that neither of us would leave the other one alone at the party without telling each other where we were going.
“Yeah, rule in place.” I replied.
We started walking towards the fire when these two guys came up to us and started to talk to Melinda. I guess she met them during school.
“This is my sister Maddison. Maddison this is Zach Parker and Ben Smith.” Melinda introduced. Both were the typical tall, dark, and handsome type.
“Hi, nice to meet you both.” I said with a smile.
“Yea.” Zach said almost in a sarcastic way. Well he’s a nice guy. Ben and Melinda seemed to be deep in a conversation or flirtation. At least she’s having fun. When I turned back towards Zach, he was gone. Whatever.
I wasn’t a big party girl so I decided to take a walk along the beach. I was alone in my thoughts. I guess I wasn’t paying attention to where I was walking because I walked right into some guy.
“Sorry.” I mumbled and kept on walking. I didn’t feel like putting on the act of enjoying the bonfire. To tell the truth, I was still bitter about the move. I had a life back in Alabama; I had friends, a boyfriend, and a life. But here, I don’t think I can have that again.
I was so deep in thought, reminiscing about my old life, when the familiar sound of “Don’t Fear The Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult started to fill my ears. I reached for my phone and saw that it was Melinda calling. Great, I broke the freaking rule.
“Hey, look I know that I--” I was in the middle of apologizing when she cut me off by saying, “Yeah, whatever. Look the party is starting to die down. All that’s left here are a couple of really huge guys and well me, so where are you?”
“I’ll be there in a few. I’ll meet you in the car.” I answered her and hung up. Well this was a fun night, wallowing in my own self pity. You know sometimes I wish I was a party girl.
Once I got back in sight of the bonfire, I looked to my left and saw the group of guys that Melinda had referred to. They had to be on steroids or something because they were huge and they looked alike with the copper skin and the dark hair. I was about to turn towards Melinda when one of them looked over at me. He wasn’t the tallest but looked to be like one of the older boys. That’s when I looked him in the eyes and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. He was gorgeous. The look on the boy’s face was of shock, anger, and I think fear. It looked like he was starting to have convulsions of some type. Once he started to shake, that got the attention of the other boys. One of them put their hand on the boy’s shoulder almost as if to calm him down. They all stared at me and then at the boy and then back at me. Okay, this was starting to freak me out a little. Why are they acting like that? I jogged to where the car was parked and got in the driver’s seat and drove off with Melinda next to me.
“What’s got you freaked?” Melinda asked once we were on the main road.
“Who were those guys?” I asked her without answering her question.
“Ben said that they were like the “protectors” of La Push, like police or something.” She replied while playing with her nails.
“Aren’t they a little young to have that kind of authority?” I asked. They had to be around our age, right?
“I guess, but Ben said that it was like some custom that put them in charge of that sort of thing.” She answered.
“Oh okay then. So, Ben huh?” I said changing the subject.
“Yes, I know what you’re thinking, but I like him. He has potential. He plays lacrosse and he loves the same kind of music I do and…” She kept on going on about how wonderful Ben happened to be, but I just tuned her out after a while because all I could think about was of what happened between me and that boy at the beach. I had never had a boy take my breath away from just one glance and that fact alone scared me shitless.
A/N: Hey everyone, I’m sorry that it took me so long to update. I had some things going on in my life. Hope you like this chapter. Please tell me what you thought.
