Chapter Three
Breakfast Boldness
I didn’t bother telling Eve about last night’s ‘interaction’ with those two boys. Because I was actually afraid that she’d start questioning me. But that was then, and this is now. Now being that we are in our table in the Great Hall consuming our early meal; it was Saturday so there was no point in hurrying.
“So guess who I had the fortune of meeting last night.”
“Who?” she asked after taking a drink of her orange juice.
“That wonderful boy and his friend,” I answered as I picked up my own cup.
Eve coughed, or appeared to as she covered her mouth. “Oh really?”
I raised an eyebrow at this, “They had detention... come to think about it, Sirius had even mentioned you,” I said as I swirled the contents within the cup. “Somehow, I get the feeling there was more to what you said yesterday.”
This had certainly caught her attention as she eagerly leaned against the table towards me. “What did he say?”
I smirked. “So there’s more to it, huh?”
She bit her lower lip as if in thought, but was soon replaced with a grin. “You know why they’d gotten detention, right?”
I took a quick drink before answering, “Who doesn’t? Why do you even ask?”
She kept grinning, “Because I was the one to recommend them to lock someone in the lavatory.”
I stared at her, unbelieving that she was the one to suggest such thing. “Eve!”
“What?”
“You were an accomplice to that!” I exclaimed for some unknown reason — well maybe because I just wanted to point it out.
“Like that’s a bad thing.”
I shook my head at this, still not believing that this was the girl who would suggest such thing.
“Are you aware I had to endure fifteen minutes of their childish behavior!”
She chuckled, “Where they that bad?”
“Oh no, they where a joy!”
She smiled at this, “So what did he say about me?”
I sighed, knowing that I was the one who started this whole thing. “Nothing bad, nothing bad.”
“Avin...” she whined. “Well, fine then. I’ll just go over to him,” she later said as she stood up from her seat.
I watched, quite surprised that the Eve I knew suddenly had this confidence surge to actually go and talk to that one boy.
She smirked, “Oh just watch me...”
I surrendered by raising my hands before me, “Fine, do whatever. It’s your life.”
She cocked her head to the side, then smiled. “Just watch and learn.”
I watched her go to the Gryffindor table, and just like she said, she started talking to him.
“So,” Remus said as the four of us sat down in the Great Hall for breakfast, “do you and James feel you’ve met this week’s ‘quota’ after last night’s escapade?”
I rolled my eyes as I piled sausage onto my plate. “Don’t act so stiff, Moony. You know you found our prank just as amusing as everyone else did.” I caught a mischievous glimmer in my friend’s eyes before he turned away to ask someone to please pass the eggs.
“Best of all,” Peter chirped as he twisted his neck around to observe the Slytherin table, “even Snape’s fellow serpents thought it was hilarious.”
“His name is Snivelly,” I reminded Peter. I also turned to look. Peter was right; Snivelly sat to a far end of the table, all by himself with his greasy head ducked in embarrassment as the other Slytherins pointed at him and snickered.
“So do you think it was worth the detention we got?”
When James did not answer my query, I actually turned to look at him. Of course, I groaned inwardly. He’s trying to impress Evans. I caught James’s hand as he went to rumple his night-colored hair (for the thousandth time…) and gave a good yank.
He swirled on me, his eyes still a bit far away and distracted. “Sirius,” he moaned, “I almost got her to look at me! Why’d you have to do that?” He looked like a child that’d just lost his favorite toy. Pathetic.
“Because you’re being a prat,” I explained. “You could have any girl in the whole school. Why pick the one that hates you most?”
Already he was losing interest in me and looking at the redheaded Lily Evans again. “It’s the challenge,” he sighed. He paused. “Plus, I bet she’s great at snogging. Just look at those plush lips…”
I tuned him out for fear of losing my breakfast.
Just as Remus, Peter, and I were getting into a discussion about the pointlessness of Divination, a soft voice behind me said, “Sirius.”
I turned to find myself looking into a pair of shining blue eyes. I knew those eyes.
“Eve,” I said.
She smiled.
I gave James a shove. He was too distracted to even care. He just moved down without a word. I patted the empty space. “Sit down,” I invited the Ravenclaw. “Stay for awhile.”
She made a pleased twitter and climbed over the bench. Across the table, Peter mockingly batted his eyelashes and Remus pretended to be overwhelmed by his (her?) charm. I rolled my eyes. “Ignore those idiots.”
Eve just smiled and smoothed her gray skirt. “Hello boys,” she greeted them.
“This is Eve,” I told them. “She’s the brilliant mastermind that came up with the idea to lock dear Snivelly in the loo.”
Her eyes widened and she playfully slapped my arm. “Sirius!” she cried. “You promised you wouldn’t tell!”
I gave a low chuckle. “But you look so pretty when you’re distressed.”
Remus coughed loudly from across the table and Peter looked as though he’d bitten his tongue clean through to keep himself from laughing. So immature. They really didn’t know a thing about flirting.
Eve ducked her head like she had done yesterday and allowed her sandy hair to cover her face. I found that to be very attractive. Somehow she managed to be shy and bold at the same time: a moment ago she’d marched right up to this table to talk to me, and now she was all flustered over a simple compliment.
“Thank you,” she murmured, looking up long enough to give me a flirtatious wink.
Oh yes, I liked her a lot.
We talked until breakfast ended. As people started filing out, she stood quickly and said she had to get back to Avin.
“Oh yes, her,” I said disinterestedly, glancing toward the Ravenclaw table. “She said she knew you.”
“We’re best friends,” Eve explained, brushing a nonexistent stray strand of hair behind her ear. She smiled and hoisted her bag over one shoulder. “Bye Sirius. Bye Remus, Peter.” She then took her leave, looking back once to wiggle her fingers in a wave.
Once she was gone, Remus observed, “She seems nice enough. But I thought you didn’t like flirting with Ravenclaws. You said they’re difficult.” He was rightly puzzled.
I shrugged. “Eve is different, I guess.” He raised his eyebrows and I went on, “It’s the challenge. Plus, I bet she’s great at snogging. Did you see those plush lips?”
That little mockery of himself was enough to pull James out of his dream world to emit a small chuckle.
I couldn’t believe she did it, she actually went and did what she said she would. And from the look of it, well, as much I could look without staring, there appeared to be some sort of conversation going on between them. Whatever they where talking about had lasted throughout what was left of breakfast. Is that a good thing? Not necessarily because it would only mean one single thing…
I stood up from my seat just in time that Eve was returning from the table she had made herself comfortable in.
“That took longer then I would have expected,” I said as I picked up the strap of my book bag.
Eve crossed her arms in front of her chest as she smirked. “You were always welcome to stop by.”
“Am I?” I asked, not necessarily for it be answered. “Besides, I’m not really interested in mingling with your dear friend.”
“It isn’t necessarily for you to mingle with him,” she said as she placed her book bag down. “Come to think about it, what is it with you not liking him at all?”
I stared at my dear friend, unbelieving that she was asking me this question. Hadn’t she paid attention to what I said yesterday? Why am I even asking this question when I already know the answer?
“Must I repeat as to my reasons?” I finally said as I started walking. “Better yet, I’m not even going to bother. Last thing I want is ruin your pretty image of him.”
I had to hold my tongue there before I went into a rant, which I was sure that Eve would have actually minded.
Eve had picked up her belongings before she, herself, started walking alongside the table with me from the opposite side.
“You don’t fancy him secretly, do you?” she asked in that little timid voice of hers.
I stopped, and turned to her. At this moment, I just wanted to scream my answer, but that wouldn’t have been nice, would it? So instead, I smiled.
“I’m your friend, and I wouldn’t dream of falling for a guy like Sirius.”
I watched her reaction to this, that being a mixture of surprise and amusement. I would have added relaxing, but I couldn’t tell this time around.
“So who are you interested then?” she asked from across. I couldn’t believe she was asking me this.
“Remus,” I replied sarcastically.
A second or two passed before she said anything. She didn’t catch my sarcasm.
“I’m kidding.”
“I know.”
I glanced over to her before we joined at the entryway of the Great Hall.
I didn’t like that answer. I didn’t like it at all.
A/N: Aha, there you go. As you can now tell, Eve is very... I don't want to say girly but it's a notch or two below it. Which explains what's happening. As for Avin, yeah... opposite, hm?
Anywho, let me know what you thought of this chapter!
