A/N: Hi peoples! Okay so seeing as yesterday was fathers’ day I figured I’d write this, lol. Here it is…
Vanessa Hudgens awoke feeling sick to her stomach. She sighed and, just as she had done every day for the past three months, made her way to the bathroom. She turned on the shower before lifting the lid on the toilet and throwing up. It wasn’t the best way to start the day, but Vanessa was used to it so it didn’t really bother her anymore.
“God, 7 AM? You aren’t even out of my stomach yet and I’m losing sleep! That’s not supposed to happen baby,” she mumbled after she had finished puking and flushed the toilet. She put a hand on her stomach and frowned, finding that it was slightly swollen. Leaning back against the wall she pulled her shirt up over the stomach to find that it had seemingly gotten larger overnight. It wasn’t a full on baby bump, but she definetly wouldn’t be wearing her fitted jeans again anytime soon. As Vanessa was examining her stomach with much curiosity she heard Zac’s voice drift in from the hallway,
“Ness? Are you taking a shower?” Vanessa jumped up and pulled her shirt down over her stomach.
“No! Hang on I’ll be right out” she turned off the water in the shower and opened the door to find her boyfriend of two years standing on the other side. She giggled seeing his dark hair sticking out in all directions. He rolled his eyes,
“Look who’s laughing bed head. Why did you have the water in the shower on if you weren’t taking a shower?” Vanessa blushed,
“There was a bug in the shower and I was trying to kill it.” She lied. She had honestly just needed something loud to block out the sound of her puking. If Zac heard her Vanessa knew he would get suspicious, and she wanted him to find out about their baby on her terms, once she knew she was out of major risk for miscarrying.
“Oh… well while we’re both here, would you care to accompany me in the shower?” Zac raised his eyebrows suggestively and Vanessa giggled, nearly saying yes, but stopping herself. Zac couldn’t see her stomach; it would be like her admitting to his face that she was pregnant. He couldn’t see it much while she was wearing one of his shirts as a pajama shirt, as it practically hung off of her, but in a shower…with no clothes, Vanessa couldn’t take the risk.
“Umm it’s like 7 in the morning so I’m gonna go back to bed, where are you going so early in the morning?” Zac shrugged,
“To the gym, then I might hang out with Corbin and Lucas, what are you doing today after you…sleep?” Vanessa bit her bottom lip, trying to remember the date.
“What’s today?” She asked finally,
“The fourteenth.” Vanessa felt her face pale; she had her three-month appointment that day at noon. If the doctor said everything was going well she was going to tell Zac about the baby.
“I have a doctors appointment, so yeah I’m going back to bed.” She said flatly, pushing past Zac and scurrying back to the bedroom where she flopped down on her stomach on her bed.
“Wait, am I not allowed to lay on my stomach anymore?” she wondered aloud, rolling onto her back, what if she crushed the baby!? Vanessa knew she needed to be careful and definetly learn more about being pregnant, but she had been trying so hard to keep it a secret from her family and from Zac she had refused to buy any sort of pregnancy books in case Zac found them or saw her reading them. Vanessa sighed and laid on her back in silence until she heard the water in the shower turn on, then she reached over and grabbed the phone off of her bedside table and dialed her best friend’s number,
“Hello?”
“Hey Ash” Besides Vanessa, Ashley was the only person who knew that her friend was pregnant. Vanessa had needed someone to talk to during everything and Ashley was her best friend so she had become her support system.
“Nessa it’s 7 in the morning your appointment isn’t until noon, what’s up” Vanessa blushed, it was bad when Ashley remembered her doctor’s appointment and she didn’t. She was taking her though, so that might have had something to do with it.
“Ashley I got fat!” Vanessa whined causing Ashley to chuckle,
“Sweetie I doubt you got fat, your only three months, your belly should only be starting to swell now.” Vanessa pulled up her shirt and stared down at her stomach again, it was definetly beyond the starting stages of swelling.
“No, it’s beyond just starting to swell now, like seriously what am I going to do?” Now it was Ashley’s turn to sigh. She found it ridiculous that Vanessa was trying to hide her pregnancy from Zac. He loved her and would be supportive no matter what.
“Well you could start by telling Zac…”
“No! Ash you know I can’t! Not yet, it’s just not the right time.” Vanessa put a hand on her stomach protectively.
“So when is the right time? Tomorrow is father’s day you know” Vanessa felt her eyes get big, she had completely forgotten about father’s day. She had made plans to meet up with her family for breakfast, so it would be a perfect time to tell them about the baby, but aside from that it would also be a perfect opportunity to tell Zac about the baby.
“That’s perfect, I’ll tell him tomorrow then,” Vanessa said, then added quietly, “as long as everything goes well at today’s appointment”
“Don’t worry sweetie, everything’s going to go fine, I promise. Now why don’t you go back to sleep for a little bit, I’ll be around to take you to your appointment at about eleven, okay?”
“Okay, bye” Vanessa hung up the phone and sighed pushing up her shirt to look at her stomach again. She couldn’t help but smile as she thought about her baby, she always knew she would be a mother one day, she just couldn’t believe that it was finally happening. Suddenly as she was thinking about how lucky she was to get to be a mother she heard the shower shut off and quickly pulled her shirt back down, and hopped under the covers quickly shutting her eyes and pretending to be asleep as Zac walked into the room.
“Nessa?” Vanessa didn’t respond, she continued to act like she was asleep. She heard him moving around in the room, getting dressed, then felt the bed shift as he lay down next to her. She held back the urge to puke, smelling his cologne as he leaned forward and kissed her on the forehead.
“Your so beautiful when you sleep Nessa” he whispered softly, thinking she couldn’t hear him. He ran his fingers down along her arm lovingly, and Vanessa liked the feeling, but as his hand traveled closer to her stomach she rolled over and Zac sighed. Vanessa felt the bed shift and held her breath as she heard Zac’s footsteps going towards the door, then they stopped and when they started again they were coming closer. Vanessa felt Zac’s lips brush her forehead again as he whispered,
“I love you so much” Vanessa wanted to burst out and tell him she loved him too, but that might bring some awkward questions as to why she had been pretending to sleep so she waited until she was sure he had left the room before sitting up and letting a few stray tears escape her eyes, sure he loved her, but would he love the baby?
“Nessa let me say hi to my godchild!” Vanessa rolled her eyes as she climbed into the passenger’s seat of Ashley’s car.
“Thanks Ash, you love me only for my baby” Vanessa said rolling up the bottom of her shirt just slightly,
“Hiiiiiiiiiii baby! It’s Auntie Ashley again,” Ashley cooed, leaning down into Vanessa’s stomach. She sat up straight again and look at Vanessa,
“You were right, your stomach did get really big. I don’t think you can keep this from Zac until tomorrow, he’s kinda going to notice” Vanessa sighed as Ashley cruised down the street,
“Yeah I know, he’ll get all suspicious, but he’s not stupid he won’t come out and say anything because he knows if he brought it up and I wasn’t pregnant I would flip out and lock myself in the bathroom and cry and say I’m fat until he has to take the hinges off the door, forcibly take me out of the bathroom, pin me down to the bed and explain he was just wondering because I seemed unusually pleasant and it’s around the time I’m supposed to be PMSing and that it was just a joke” Ashley giggled,
“That’s a good one, Jared doesn’t even bother with an excuse he just goes out and buys me stuff to make me feel better” Vanessa nodded and they continued to talk until they pulled up outside the doctor’s office and Vanessa felt her throat go dry.
“Ashley I can’t do this” She mumbled as Ashley parked the car. Ashley gave her a reassuring smile,
“Don’t worry Nessa I’m sure everything’s fine.” Vanessa nodded,
“Yeah I know, but I’m still scared…whatever lets just go.” She got out of the car and without waiting for Ashley started towards the door. Ashley quickly caught up and they continued inside where Vanessa walked up to the desk.
“Hi, I have an appointment with Dr. Gies” The receptionist looked down at her appointment book and nodded,
“Yep you can go in, she’s waiting” Vanessa smiled gratefully and turned around going back to Ashley.
“Okay so I’m gonna head in, I’ll be out in like half an hour” Ashley nodded, sitting down in one of the waiting room chairs,
“Alright, I’ll wait here”
Half an hour later Vanessa bounced into the waiting room grinning from ear to ear.
“Ashley she’s healthy!” She squealed happily when she reached her best friend. Vanessa had been referring to her baby as “she” because it was too soon to tell the gender, but she desperately wanted a little girl. Ashley smiled standing up and hugging Vanessa,
“That’s great sweetie! See I told you she would be fine. And since she is, you have to tell Zac tomorrow.” Vanessa bit her bottom lip, but nodded. She had always known the day would come when she had to tell Zac, but it was still going to be difficult. She knew that Zac loved her, but they weren’t even married, the thought of kids had never crossed Vanessa’s mind until she realized that after missing her pill she was indeed pregnant.
While Ashley drove Vanessa home, Vanessa tried to think of how to tell Zac that they were having a baby. She wanted to do something cute, but not entirely over the top, in case he wasn’t happy. She was looking out the window when suddenly they passed a baby boutique advertising cute onesies that said, “I love my Daddy” in honor of Father’s Day. Vanessa suddenly knew how she was going to tell Zac,
“Ashley stop the car”
That night Vanessa waited until Zac had gone to sleep before sneaking out of bed. She went into her closet and pulled out the card, wrapping paper, and gift she had gotten before going downstairs into the living room. She set everything down on the coffee table and grabbed the pen she had put there before going to bed. The card was simple; it said “Happy Fathers Day!” on the front and was blank on the inside. Vanessa sighed, biting the end of the pen. She didn’t know what to write in the card. She knew she owed Zac an explanation for waiting so long to say anything, the truth was that her doctor had told Vanessa her pregnancy was high risk and that she would probably miscarry before even starting the second trimester. Still, things had gone well and at her three-month appointment her doctor said that there was a good chance she would carry to term.
“Lets see, what should I write?” she mumbled, putting a hand on her stomach and sighing. Finally she came up with,
“Dear Zac,
This probably comes as a surprise to you, but in about six months you’re going to be a daddy. So technically you’re not a father yet, but I got you something anyways.
Love,
Vanessa
After signing it she shoved it in the envelope and turned to her gift. She took the onesie and folded it up nicely, then rolled out the metallic silver wrapping paper ad set the onesie on it. It was then that she realized she didn’t have any scissors.
“Urggg, I’m too tired to deal with this right now baby, you’re stealing all my energy!” she said to her stomach with a giggle. She loved talking to the baby, even though she knew it was too soon for the baby to even hear her. She yawned and lay down on her side,
“Maybe I’ll just lay down for a few minutes then get up and finish this.” She mumbled, her eyes fluttering shut. Within a few moments she was asleep and the present was lying out in the open in clear sight.
Zac awoke to the sun shining through his window and yawned, opening his eyes,
“Nessa?” he asked sleepily, turning over to his girlfriend’s side of the bed, but she wasn’t there. Zac sighed, Vanessa had been acting very strange lately, she had been getting up early and seemed off in her own world. She usually loved all kinds of food, but in the past few months Zac noticed she hardly ate anything and got sick more frequently. He was beginning to get nervous, Vanessa had dealt with body issues in the past and he was worried they were coming back to haunt her.
After laying in silence for a few moments Zac pulled himself out of bed and made his way to the bathroom, where Vanessa usually was when he woke up, but the door was open and Vanessa was nowhere to be found.
“I must’ve gotten up late today,” Zac mumbled, running his fingers through his hair. He wasn’t convinced though, there was something going on he could always count on Vanessa to be in the bathroom when he woke up, usually taking a shower. He hesitated for a moment, then headed downstairs,
“Vanessa?” he called, reaching the bottom of the stairs and frowning when he didn’t get a response. Now he was getting weirded out, where could Vanessa have gone? Walking into the living room he got the answer.
Vanessa was asleep on the couch, one arm extended out over a present she hadn’t wrapped on the coffee table, the other rest on her stomach. Zac smiled, she had probably been wrapping a present for her father for father’s day and fallen asleep.
“Poor Nessa, you must have been exhausted,” Zac mumbled, reaching down and gently pushing Vanessa’s bangs out of her face. It was then that he noticed the card with his name on it sitting next to the present. He picked it up and looked at it curiously, should he open it or wait for Vanessa to wake up? He knew he should probably wait, but his curiosity got the best of him and he opened it, his face turning pale when he saw the front of the card.
“She must’ve been so tired she wrote the wrong name,” Zac said to himself, staring down at the card. It couldn’t be for him, he certainly wasn’t a father…was he? His hands shook as he opened the card and read what Vanessa had written.
“Oh my god” the card fell from his hands as he stared at Vanessa lying on the couch. Suddenly it all made sense, she had been getting morning sickness, that was why she was hardly eating and getting sick more often. In fact that probably explained the shower too. For some reason Vanessa had been turning the shower on in the mornings when she went into the bathroom and Zac realized it was probably to mask the sound of her puking. He stood staring at her for a while, then slowly walked over and lifted her into his arms sitting down on the couch and holding her on his lap.
“Oh Nessa, why didn’t you tell me? Why?” Zac asked, burying his face in her hair and inhaling the sweet scent of her shampoo. When he looked up again the unwrapped present on the table caught his eye and he carefully reached over and picked the thing up. It unfolded and Zac couldn’t help but grin, it was a white onesie with “I love my Daddy” written on it in green. He laid it out on the table as he felt Vanessa begin to stir in his arms,
“Mornin Nessa” Zac said softly as Vanessa blinked sleepily then smiled,
“Mornin” she yawned, still half asleep, but suddenly she hopped up from Zac’s lap, wide awake, but not realizing where she was,
“I have to go to the bathroom,” she said quickly, beginning to run from the room.
“Morning Sickness?” Zac asked, standing up. Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks and Zac saw her face go pale as she suddenly realized what had happened,
“Oh my god, last night with the present…” Tears came to her eyes, “I only meant to lay down for a second… Oh my god, please tell me your not mad” Zac gave her a reassuring smile, walking over to her,
“Nessa I’m not mad at all…we’re having a baby! Seriously what could be better than having a baby with the girl I love.” Vanessa smiled as a few loose tears ran down her cheeks,
“I love you too Zac” suddenly her face dropped, “But I’m still gonna be sick” Zac chuckled as she darted for the bathroom, he would get used to it.
