I Remember You Well

Ooh, then I suddenly see you,
Ooh, did I tell you I need you
Every single day of my life

You didn't run, you didn't lie
You knew I wanted just to hold you
Had you gone, you knew in time, we'd meet again
For I had told you

Ooh, you were meant to be near me
Ooh, and I want you hear me
Say we'll be together every day

Prologue: Some Risky Business

“How many times do I have to tell you, Edward? Of course I trust you. You’re not going to hurt me; you’re not going to ruin me.” The stubborn, dark-haired girl with soft brown eyes said to her husband. Her hand was resting on his smooth, pale face that was chilling to the touch. She stroked his cheek with the pad of her thumb, finding it just a little strange that she was the one comforting him in this situation.

For so long had she been begging him to change her, she wanted to be like him, she wanted to be his forever, and now it was so close to happening. She felt confident in her choice, she definitely wouldn’t back out…there was no other way for them to be together for all of eternity with out this step in the equation. He didn’t want to live without her, nor she without him.

There was a knock at the bedroom door and Edward sat up on the bed, whispering ever so softly for them to enter. The door opened and another pale male with blonde hair and an angelic face entered, Carlisle. “Are you ready?” He asked both of them, his topaz colored eyes staring at Edward, then Bella.

Bella could only nod her head. She was putting on such a brave front when her insides were doing somersaults. She felt as if she were going to throw up at any given moment. She took a slow, steady deep breath, willing herself to push any and all bad thoughts she had to the furthest corner of her mind.

“Can you give us another minute? And then we’ll be down there,” Edward spoke, his voice still soft. Carlisle nodded his head and retreated from the room without another word. “Bella, I love you,” he said, simply.

Bella bit her bottom lip softly, turning away from him. Her eyes were beginning to burn and she didn’t want him to see her cry, breaking down in the last moments they would ever spend together like this. Her breathing became uneasy, her body shaking as she attempted to keep herself from crying.

Edward wrapped his arm around her, pulling her towards him. He placed a hand on the back of her head, bringing it to his clothed chest. There was another shaky intake of air before he could feel the tears dampening the material of his shirt. His eyes fell to the ring on her hand, the ring he’d given her. The ring that tied them together, legally, in a documented way. “Edward, I’m so sorry. I-I’m tired of being brave. I’m afraid, I’m so afraid, Edward.” She said as one of her tiny hands grabbed at his shirt.

He stroked the hairs on her head, placing a soft kiss on her forehead. “It’s alright, Bella, you know this is all up to you, we don’t have to do it.”

She sat up abruptly, shaking her head stubbornly as the tears continued to flow. “Why are you always saying that? It’s like you’re trying to convince me not to spend the rest of, of, forever with you. Do you not want me anymore? Will you stop loving me when blood no longer flows through my veins? When you can’t listen to my heart beat? When I can’t blush? When I’m not fragile? Will you hate not having to watch my every move so I don’t break? Edward just stop saying that! I want to be with you,” she concluded, not realizing that she had started shouting. She wiped the tears from her face, taking in the look on his, which read confusion and worry.

His furrowed brows eventually straightened out into flat line. He shook his head, his eyes fluttering shut for brief moment before he settled them on her. “Of course I want you, I’ll always want you. Human or vampire, it doesn’t matter. I just want you to be positive that this is what you want.”

“It is what I want Edward, more than anything.”

“I knew it,” he muttered, shaking his head and chuckling softly. “There used to be something else you wanted, more than anything.”

“What?” She asked with an incredulous look on her face.

“I think you just have this crazy obsession with vampires. First you just wanted to seduce me, now you want to be one of us,” he said, failing to keep a straight face any longer and his face broke out into a grin.

Bella playfully swatted at his chest, wiping her face once more, unable to keep from smiling as well. “I love you too, you know,” she kept her eyes on his, not ever wanting to lose his gaze.

“I know, Bella, I know,” he said before he slid off the bed and scooped her up into his arms. He took his time as they walked out of his bedroom and down the many flights of stairs before they were in the living room with the rest of his family. The entire time the walked, he couldn’t help but whisper sweet-nothings into her ear, holding her as close to his body as humanly possible; which mean without crushing her bones.

He put her on her feet, and the entire family just stared at them, obviously they’d heard the shouting that went on upstairs and Bella couldn’t help but blush, staring down at her converse clad feet.

Carlisle cleared his throat and stood to his feet, “If you’re ready then,” he said, looking pointedly at Bella. She was a brave young girl, he knew that but this…this was going to hurt. He sighed softly when she nodded her head, moving swiftly towards her to wrap his arms around her in a soft embrace.

“I am, Carlisle, and thank you so much, for being so encouraging,” she said after he pulled back from the hug. “All of you, really, and I just hope I don’t turn into too much of a pest.”

“More than you’ve already been?” The short, pixie like vampire spoke up, a teasing grin on her face.

“I love you too, Alice,” Bella replied sarcastically, rolling her eyes, but still returning the same grin.

Edward started nodding his head and Bella looked slightly confused, but figured he was listening to the thoughts of one of his family members.

“Bella, Edward’s going to take you down to the ah, makeshift room we’ve prepared for this,” Carlisle told her, “Alice and myself will be down there to make sure everything goes well in just a moment.”

Bella could only nod, feeling like she was in a daze as Edward placed her in his arms again. She looked back over his shoulder at Rosalie, Jasper, and Emmett who had remained silent the whole time and offered a smile. Two of the three returned the kind gesture.

She rested her head on his shoulder, shutting her eyes and waiting until they arrived wherever he was taking her. “I feel like she’ll hate me after this, more than ever,” she whispered to Edward.

“She doesn’t hate you, don’t worry about her. The few times a day when she’s not thinking about herself, she’s usually concentrating on Emmett,” Edward said as he used his foot to push a door open. “This room used to have all our tools in it, for the cars and all, but we cleared it out and made it more…comfortable.”

Bella lifted her head up and looked around, the room wasn’t too big, and it was dimly lit. There was a small, twin sized bed, a comfortable looking chair and a table. Edward sat her down on the bed and she let her feet dangle over the side, watching them swing idly.

“Just thinking?” he asked, putting his long, slender pointer finger beneath her chin and slowly lifting her head so she was looking at him. She nodded her head before kicking her shoes off and swinging her legs up onto the bed, laying her head back on the pillow.

“Do you think I’ll be comfortable in this?” She asked, looking down and the jeans and his white, button up shirt she was wearing.

He chuckled softly, “Even if you were naked, I still doubt you’d be comfortable. Carlisle’s coming with the morphine, now,” he said, bending down to place a soft kiss on her lips. Before he could even pull back, her arms were around his neck, pulling him down to her again. She kissed him, pressing her lips to his as hard as she could, trying to bring him down on the bed with her. He yielded and sat next to her, leaning into her, his cold hands trailing down heated skin lightly. “Carlisle’s here,” he broke away saying. He stood, as the door opened again, Alice peeking her head in first before she and Carlisle entered the room.

“You’re quite brave, you know that, Bella?” Alice said, coming to the bed as Edward moved to the back and began speaking to Carlisle in a hushed voice.

“I’m not. Really. More risky than anything else. I’m nervous, my palms are sweating,” she offered a weak laugh, rubbing her clammy hands together.

“Carlisle and I aren’t going to let anything happen to you,” Alice said, reaching out for her hands that seemed to instantly cool down. “I want to take you hunting after you’re better. Edward’s bringing you a mountain lion for your first treat, though,” she laughed.

Bella’s eyes opened wide as she looked at Edward who could only grin. He’d been listening to both conversations. Bella shook her head, though she knew that soon she would be craving it. Edward and Carlisle made their way to the bed, Carlisle brought his doctor bag with him. He took out a syringe and other utensils and began filling it up. Bella’s expression still held that shocked look to it. She hated needles.

Edward stepped aside as Carlisle zeroed in on Bella, instructing her to look the other way and talk to Alice.

“We should take the truck of yours to a compactor. Or you know, with enough work of you venting some anger out on it you’d be able to do it yourself,” Alice joked, her eyes never leaving Bella’s.

“I like my truck.”

“Sadly,” Edward muttered from the behind Carlisle.

“Shush,” she glared at him, before looking at Carlisle who nodded his head and stood up, Alice did so as well. Bella felt oddly at ease as Edward came closer, a grin plastered to her face. “There’s nothing to worry about, Alice told me so,” she lied, her eyes fluttering shut as she found herself unmotivated to keep them open.

“Bella, Bella, listen to me. Are you sure you’re ready?”

“I’m sure, Edward, now more than ever,” she told him. His hands moved up and he began to unbutton his shirt that she was wearing, exposing more skin to his lustful eyes. “Not now, Edward,” she mumbled, “Carlisle and Alice are still here.”

Alice stifled a laugh and Edward sighed, “I’m not trying to do that Bella. I’m going to bite, here,” he said, his cold hand trailed along her hot flesh to the spot where he could see her heart pumping, ever so slightly. It was in that general area that he would sink his teeth, perhaps a little higher as not to damage the breast. Carlisle told him the closer to the heart the bite was, the quicker the process would be.

“I trust you. I’m ready,” she said, and her eyes opened. She looked into his light colored eyes. He’d made sure he hunted before this, so he wouldn’t be too thirst. But he had a feeling he could be overcome by something. The drinking would please him so, he was sure of it. He’d lusted for it since the very first time he sat next to her and now he was going to have it. He placed a gentle kiss on her lips before tailing kisses along her jaw line and back to her ear. He caught the bottom of her earlobe between his lips, pulling on it softly before letting go.

“I love you, I swear I do,” he whispered, inhaling the strawberry sent of her hair. He resumed his kisses, starting at the nape of her neck. He could smell the freesias, the pulse of her blood flowing so close to his lips, his hands. He came to an area near to her collar bone and parted his lips, he could practically taste it already. Everything was blocked out of his mind except for her. He was even able to push away the thoughts of Alice and Carlisle behind him. His tongue snaked out and he lightly licked at the delicate skin he was preparing to puncture. She was so alluring, so enticing, and she was all his. He lightly blew his sweet, cold breath on the area as the venom began to enter his mouth. His lips moved back as he barred his teeth, a slight hiss escaping just before he sunk them into her creamy skin.

Carlisle and Alice tensed behind him, knowing it would take a moment but not too long of a moment. No one wanted him to get carried away.

Edward’s eyes fluttered shut as did Bella’s, but she seemed to be in a euphoric state – for now. His teeth unclenched on her skin as soon as the bite had been made and he immediately began to drink, slowly. The rich, copper taste of the blood spilled over his taste buds and washed over his body. He’d never tasted anything so beautiful in his entire existence. He was enjoying himself. He wanted it, he wanted all of it.

Edward, Carlisle gently warned.

He listened, his eyes flickering open to see her face, finding her just staring at him before he looked back to Carlisle, as if asking for help. The taste was even better than the first time; pity that this would be the last time. Without thinking about it any longer her forced himself away from her body, turning away so he wouldn’t have to look at her as he licked the blood from his lips.

You did fine, Carlisle promised, ushering Edward away as he went to Bella’s side. She held a look of pain in her eyes though she wasn’t screaming yet, clearly the morphine was working as it should. He produced a cleaning kit from his bag and proceeded to wipe the blood away from the wound and cover up the puncture. “We’ll be here for you Bella, the entire time. We’ll be here for you,” the voice sounded quiet and faraway to her as she shut her eyes, once more, letting the feelings overwhelm her as she dozed off into the last comatose state she’d ever be in.

She would be fine, they wouldn’t let her down, not ever, especially not Edward.

She woke up with a start, screaming as her entire body was set on fire. It hurt, it hurt worse than anything. She squeezed her eyes shut, grabbing fistfuls as her small body writhed on the bed. She was finding it difficult to even breathe, she wanted this all to stop. Then, someone was next to her, and though some of the heat was take away, the majority of her body felt like it was a flame. She grasped whomever it was that sat next to her, she feared to open her eyes, not knowing what sight would greet her if she did.

“IT HURTS!” She screamed before letting out a banshee-like scream that seemed to carry on forever.

There was a voice speaking to her, but she couldn’t register what it was saying, she couldn’t concentrate on anything but this pain and it was killing her. She was dying, she could feel it. Her breath came out in random spurts; she had no control over her own breathing anymore. Her limbs felt numb, as the blood ceased to flow through it, and she grimaced, clenching her teeth together to prevent from howling again, but to no avail. Her mouth opened and she practically screamed her ears off. Her eyes finally snapped open and she shot up from her laying down position, bracing herself as the waves of pain just kept coming. “It hurts,” she pleaded with anyone who would listen as she looked around the room at the diminishing faces of familiarity. “It hurts,” she repeated, though it didn’t help any. She wanted to cry, she willed herself to cry but she couldn’t, all she could do was let out another wail of a scream.

She threw herself backwards on the bed, feeling her head collide with something so hard that it hurt, and for the briefest second her head wasn’t on fire as the pain from the blow hit her. Then her head was on the pillow, there were more hushed voices and her eyes fluttered shut, her head lolling to the side, not wanting to deal with any of it anymore.

“Carlisle, it’s been four days,” a worried voice said from not too far away.

“Give her some time, Edward, she’s going to come around soon.”

“How can you tell? How do you know she just isn’t – dead?”

“Impossible. Shut up, Edward,” a more feminine sounding voice spoke up.

On the bed where Bella lay, quiet for the first time in days, she was slowly coming back to reality. She wasn’t on fire, not at all, quite the opposite. And then, something, possibly her breath, was caught in her throat as she bolted into an upright position on the bed, her hand slamming to the left area of her chest. Her heart had stopped beating.

What was wrong with her? She told herself to breathe, and she did, but her heart just wouldn’t beat. She folded her hand into a fist and hit the area of her chest repeatedly.

“Bella, Bella, stop it, stop it,” a soft, welcoming voice said as the person sat down in front of her on the bed, pulling her hands away from her body.

She furrowed her brow as she stared into the pale face of a very handsome, bronze-haired male. “Bella,” she repeated softly. Yes, that was her name. She blinked slowly, turning her head to the side a little as she took in his face. It seemed so familiar, yet a little too foreign.

She was able to snatch her hands away from him and move back on the bed, crawling as close to the headboard as she could. “Bella,” the boy said one more, a weary look in his eye as he reached a hand out for her again.

She shook her head, shying away from his touch. Why was he trying to be so close with her? She didn’t even know him.
