The Only One

Graduation.

For many the rite of passage incited feelings of excitement, as they stepped from one life into another.

The majority of the seniors at PCA were riding the emotions often associated with the day. They were scrambling around the campus of the private school saying last goodbyes and scrounging up signatures in their yearbooks.

Logan Reese, however, did not want to join with his fellow students in their fervor. Instead, he sat in his room, shades drawn, lights off. Depressed out of his mind, he held his yearbook open to a certain page, eyes trained to the picture that took up half of the page.

For many, the moment the diploma was received signified the entrance to a bright future. But Logan couldn’t imagine his future containing any sort of light without… He let his fingers graze over her picture, a lump in his throat.

When a knock sounded at his door, he swallowed. It took a couple of tries to talk, as he cleared his throat. “Come in,” he finally managed, his voice coming out sounding slightly strangled.

“Logan,” Quinn said, sticking her head in. She smiled when her eyes met his, her brown eyes illuminating against the darkness. “What are you doing?” Her eyes glanced from him to the closed curtains. “Why are you sitting in the dark?” In an instant, she was across the room, pulling the curtain open and letting light pour in.

Gulping, he soaked in her every movement. “I just, unh, I don’t know.”

She turned toward him, hands on hips. A thoughtful look entered her eyes as she kept her gaze fixed on him. “What’s wrong?” she said, softly, moving toward him. When she was close enough, she spotted what page the yearbook was opened to. “Ah. Most likely to get married.” She chortled with laughter then sat next to him on the bottom bunk, eyes on the picture of her and Logan. “I can’t believe they voted us most likely to get married. I thought that it would most definitely be Zoey and Chase.”

Logan kept his head down, not willing to meet her eyes. “Yeah. I can’t believe it either.”

Concerned, she took his hand in hers, pressing her fingers tightly to the back of his hand. “Is that what’s bothering you Logan?”

Shaking his head, he closed the book, sealing the picture away for the time being. “I mean, you’re the only…the only girl…” That lump was back, preventing him from speaking. “I love you, you know,” he murmured, managing to say the words. “I don’t want to lose you.”

Her head angled to side, showing her confusion. “Why would you lose me?”

A pause lingered in the air as, one more, he searched for strength to go on. “Because. We’re going to different schools. You’re going to meet all these smart guys who will make you realize what I am.”

“What you are?” She scooted closer, grabbed his face with her free hand, forcing him to look at her. “You mean the most amazing guy ever? The boy I love and am most likely to marry?” The look in his eyes revealed that he was still doubtful. “You’re right Logan. I’m going to be meeting a lot of boys - men - who will be very different than you but they won’t be you. And you’re the only one that I want.”

He almost smiled at her words but still had trouble believing.

“And what about you?” she went in, releasing his face from her grasp and poking him in the center of the chest. “You’ll be attending school with a lot of girls who would gladly make you their own. How do I know that one of those beauties won’t make you question your devotion to me?”

Shocked, his already large eyes widened. “That would never happen Quinn.”

“Why not?” She squinted at him, struggling to keep her smile at bay.

“Because…because…” Realization dawned on him as he understood her tactic. “Because those girls aren’t you and you are the only one that I want.”

The smile burst forth at his words, illuminating her eyes once more. “Logan, I can’t believe you were worried about losing me.”

“We’ll still be at different schools,” he said, shrugging.

“But we will both be attending school in California. You can make weekend trips from UCLA up to Stanford, can’t you?”

Half a smile appeared on his face as one corner of his mouth lifted. “For you, babe, of course.”

Her lips parted in a laugh and she grabbed his hand, standing, pulling him with her. “Come on now. This is our last day here. Let’s get out of this dismal room.”

“Wait. One more thing.”

She had already begun walking towards the door but she stopped at his words, exasperated. Her head swiveled on her neck as she turned it to look at him. Their arms, joined at the hands, stretched out between their bodies, suspended in the air. He pulled gently on her hand, eliminating the space between them. When she was close enough, he cupped his hand against the side of her cheek and dipped his lips to touch hers. She responded to his kiss, like she always did.

The kiss created butterflies in his stomach, a fact that had not changed since their first kiss.

“I know you don’t like waiting…” he said, after pulling apart, his smiling eyes boring into hers.

She rolled her eyes. “For that Logan, you know I will always wait.”

He smiled at her words and continued to smile as she led him from the room.

Suddenly, the day didn’t seem as an end but, rather, a new beginning, a new stage in his relationship with Quinn. And that Logan could get excited about.
