Daybreak.

Authors Note: I guess this could be taken after Eclipse. I would like to say it takes place a few years after everything dies down. Edward and Bella are NOT in this story. But Jacob Black, Quil Ateara, Sam Seth Clearwater, Sam Ulley as well as others are. My intention is NOT a mary-sou fic. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. It is for entertainment only.

The first thing I noticed when I entered La Push was the sign that read RV Park, Oceanside Resort, Rivers Edge Restaurant, and Marina. My mom of course would want to get us settled in at one of the cabins at the Resort before I ventured off. But the window was down letting the smell of salt and vegetation tickles my nostrils. I just couldn’t take sitting while she unpacked most of the things. My own suitcase was bursting at the seams, but I could probably unpack in record time.

“Isn’t this great Eve!” But I was barely paying attention as my mother was speaking. The scenery was distracting. “It’ll be just us girls here you know, no brother and father to ruin our stay!” Her brown hair no longer in curls because of the plane ride had fallen limply around her shoulders. The flush on her face wasn’t because of the makeup she wore, but instead the excitement she was feeling at being free. I couldn’t blame her for wanting to get away from her teaching job in Boston. The standing up constantly in the classroom had given her bone spurs in her heals and they were quite painful at times. She declined teaching the summer drivers education program, telling them she was spending it with her family. She did offer however to correct all of the advanced placement history papers. I just hope she doesn’t spend time doing them here while she could be doing other things. For instance soaking her feet in the water and reading a good book.

But as for me, well I was excited about getting away as well. June in Boston was like living in a microwave oven that was constantly on high. The air circulation in the city was poor as well. Coming all the way here was a blessing for both of us. When I was little my whole family would go up to the White Lake region in the North East and stay for two weeks. The trip was spent either hiking or lounging around on the beach. I use to love those times. But Mike was in college now, so my mother felt that dragging him away from his new friends would be cruel. That left the nearest thing close to wilderness The Boston Commons. I love that place, but let’s be real here, it’s surrounded by skyscrapers. As much as I would like to fool myself into thinking I was back in the White Mountains I couldn’t.

We were on the shore of the Pacific Ocean for a month. My hands were shaking so much from being as excited as I was. My mom looked over at me and just blinked. I was taking my pillow and blanket out of my duffle bag in a hurry. I shoved them into a corner of the small one bedroom we were about to share.

“Okay mom I’m done, I think I’ll just go check things out.” I had to fight hard to stop smile that was threatening to take over my face down.

“Just be careful” She said to me. I just shrugged , grabbing my backpack.

The small walk down to the water wasn’t too bad. Our cabin was just a minute down the road. The trees were thick with foliage and the path was a bit narrow, but when I did find it I could not stop grinning. It was a good thing no one was around for that. I hardly ever showed such emotion in public. So someone seeing it would embarrass me to no end.

“It’s so.. pretty…” I found myself saying out loud to the rippling water in front of me. The grayish clouds above just made the green trees along the water brighter. And whenever the wind blew the water rippled and it brought a smile to my face.

After a few more minutes of watching the scene before me I slipped my sandals off and cuffed up my pants. I spread out the towel I brought with me and placed my shoes on one end, and the backpack at the other so the wind wouldn’t move it.

The pebbles and sand actually felt good under my feet as I moved down to the water. I wondered if it was cold at all as I slipped one food in.

I squeak out loud and freeze The water is freezing, but it doesn’t stop me from enjoying the feel of it against my skin. Call me a masochist but I love the way it leaves pinpricks along my ankles.

I slip another foot into the water and sigh in obvious content. But I want more. Leaning down I roll my pants up to my knees so I can go in a bit deeper and not get my jeans wet. If I could have my way completely I would be all the way immersed in the water. But that wasn’t about to happen today. The water was much to cold.

“ah Hello?” A distinct male voice says behind me and I’m so startled that I jump a bit. But being in the water left my legs feeling quite numb and wobbly. I reach out to brace myself for the fall. My hands meet the sandy floor instead. The only words that go through my head are ones directed towards the god above me. Thanking him for saving me from such embarrassment. It is an odd position of someone my height to be in. I’m not exactly tall but I am in fact taller than most girls. I know that if I don’t make a move soon my back is going to hurt form being hunched over so much.

“oh I’m sorry!” The voice says again from behind me. “I didn’t mean to ah.. sneak up on you like that.” He sounds embarrassed from the tone of his voice. I myself feel horrible at being seen like this by a total stranger. My cheeks burn red as I shift to stand up straight.

“Do you ah.. need help?” He still sounds embarrassed.

“oh, um nah, it’s ok.” I breath out. Concentrating on the problem at hand instead of making small talk. “Just.. give me a second here.” There was no way I am about to fall face first into this water. With all my might I push against the sand to stand up. I barely make it.

Right when I turn around I see him.

My eyes blink as I focus my eyes on the boy—wait, man, in front of me. He is tall and with a muscular physic that reminds me of a wrestler. His brown hair looks like it had just been cut judging by the neatness of the way it is pulled back at the base of his neck. Judging by that his hair must be just to his shoulders, like mine.

I must have looked scared when I first looked at him when I turned because right now his eyes are wide. I lift a hand in the air and wave to him. “Ah.. Hi?”

It felt like a few more minutes were going by. I was starting to feel uncomfortable by the incessant stare he was giving me. It suddenly occurred to me that maybe I wasn’t allowed on this beach. Was this private to his people only!? I started to panic.

“Should I not be here? I mean, is this private property?” I asked in a small voice. Where were my Boston wits today? Obviously they went out of the window when I was in unfamiliar territory, like a beach on an ocean I had never been to, in the presence of a man that looked like he could take out an entire football team.

He looked like he was calculating me, trying to decide if I was a threat or something. I swayed slightly and opened my mouth to say something else but there was a loud holler coming from the path I had just taken.

“Embry! Where are you man?” My whole body froze as two men emerged from the trees. The first had longer black hair that was around his shoulders, the second was much like the man in front of me.

I clear my throat and re-voice my earlier question. “Is this.. private property?” My voice had increased in volume from before and I was thankful for that. I hate to appear weak to other people.

He looks at me surprised for a moment. “ah, no.”

“Oh alright, I was just making sure..” I mumble as I looked away from him. I move out of the water and head for my towel. My hands were getting sticky from them being in the water. The need to wipe then on something was starting to get to me.

“You must be who is staying in the cabin nearby.” The man from before said from my left.

I turn to him right when I make it where I had my things camped out. While I had been in the water it looked like some of the wind had blown sand onto my towel. So much for wiping my hands on it then. “Oh, um yeah.. my mom and I…”

He smiled as I was speaking. “How do you like it so far?” He seems to be not so confused any more. But the other two, including the one who is still looking at me with this odd look are just standing there watching out exchange

“It’s very nice.” His own smile made me feel more at ease as I retuned it to him.

He points to himself as he speaks. “I’m Jacob, but Jake is better, The only person who says my full name is my dad, when I’m in trouble.” I knew exactly what that was like. I couldn’t help but chuckle. He smiles as he waves over at the other two.“That’s Quil, and this is –“ As he turns to who had startled me earlier he stops short. He is still looking at me with an unreadable expression. “um.. Embry?” He blinked his dark eyes at his friend and waved a hand in front of his face. “What’s wrong with you?”

It must have startled him because he flinched and looked at Jacob suddenly with a sort of pained expression. “Ah, I got to go.” He said lowly. And with out even looking at me he blinked. “Nice meeting you…” He trailed off as he turned his back on us and headed for the path.

Did I do something wrong? “Evelyn... but Eve is fine…” I said quietly, not sure if I had suddenly said something to make him upset.

He was gone in les than a minute and I am left standing here. I turn my attention back to Jacob. “Did I… do something wrong?” I ask him, concern was laced in my voice. I was going to be here for a month and I don’t want to be a nuisance.

The man named Quil looks torn about something. He shifts on the balls of his feet as he stares trans fixed at something on the ground.

“Ah, He probably doesn’t feel good.” Jake says evenly, still keeping a smile on his face, but it looks forced somehow. “We have to get going, but maybe we’ll see you around.” He waves to me as he grabs at Quils upper arm, almost like he was about to drag him away if he protested.

Something was going on here. Why would he look at me like that? It made no sense. I let out a long sigh and gather my things. I’m really hoping this trip doesn’t end up being a whirlwind of chaos for me. I really hope I’m leaving all that behind.
