Chapter 11: Bar Fight
I sat staring at the bright green beer sign that screamed ‘Guinness’ to passerby in the dim lighted hang out spot commonly known as Owen’s Tavern. While the music pounded around me I couldn’t help but feel extremely out of place while Kiki and Cody danced raucously and Randy and Adam drowned their sorrows away in cheap liquor. Spinning away from the bar, I rested my back against it to watch my friends from my bar stool, Ted had disappeared into the tight crowd on the dance floor over an hour ago and I had no one to talk to since Adam had taken up tequila shots.
“Hello there,” an unfamiliar voice whispered hoarsely in my ear, the smell of alcohol overpowering my senses. I turned to see one of the guys in my class; I think his name was Mike Mizanin. His eyes were bloodshot and his hair tousled in an attempt to look sexy. In all honesty, he was nowhere close to being cute.
“Um, hi,” I leaned away from him as he blatantly stared at my chest.
“How about you and me go somewhere more private,” he slurred, slapping his hand on my thigh.
Thoroughly grossed out, I pushed his hand away and shook my head, “No thanks, I’m fine right here.”
“Oh, come on, baby,” he leaned close to my face again and I had to fight the bile rising in my throat.
“No, I’m good, thanks,” I remained firm, shoving him away from me.
“Does there seem to be a problem?” Adam charged over, another shot in his hand as he pushed Mike off of me.
“Hey, man, I’m trying to talk to the lady!”
Laughing, Adam threw back the shot and slammed the glass on the bar, “Well clearly the lady’s not interested.”
“You know what prick? I don’t appreciate the cock blocking, you asshole!”
I couldn’t jump off my bar stool quick enough as Adam reared back and slammed the guy in the jaw. The two were quickly smashing their beer bottles on everything and yelling at each other drunkenly. A corner of the guy’s beer bottle hit Adam in the face leaving a long cut down his cheek, the blood quickly dribbling down his cheek. While the bouncers rushed in to split up the fight I threw myself at Adam’s chest as he went to plow the guy through the bar. He slammed into me but thankfully, he stopped, a confused look on his bloody face.
“Logan?”
“Yeah, it’s me, now knock it off before you get arrested!” I screamed at him, shoving my hand into his shoulder. “Let’s go! Kiki, Cody, we’re leaving!”
“Ah com on, I just wanted one more shot!” Adam whined, tripping over his own feet as Kiki, Cody, Ted and Randy followed us outside.
“No, we’re going back to Hearst, I’m not going to deal with this bullshit all night. I thought you wanted to have fun but I never knew your version of having fun was getting drunk and stupid! Next time you ask me to go anywhere I’m definitely saying NO!” I growled as Adam stumbled beside me, his blonde hair getting stuck in the blood on his face. “You’re lucky my mom gave me a first aid kit too or you’d be shit outta luck right now, buddy.”
“You know why he started drinking right?” Randy sidled up to me as Adam narrowly missed walking into a lamppost.
“I assume because him and Amy broke it off,” I shrugged.
“She was there,” Randy whispered, nudging my hip with his hand before rushing forward to help Adam walk straight.
Rolling my eyes, I heaved a sigh as we all made our way back onto campus. Kiki had her arm around Cody while Ted walked behind us, his head in the clouds. “Hey, Kiki, can you stay with Cody and Ted tonight? I’m gonna let Adam crash in our room.”
“That’s fine,” both Kiki and Cody replied at once and laughed.
Rolling my eyes again, I slowed down my pace to walk with Ted who was admiring the stars, his mouth wide open. He looked down when I nudged him and flashed a smile.
“Hey.”
“I didn’t think you’d be shitfaced too,” I grinned and he shook his head.
“Nah, I didn’t drink anything, I was just admiring the sky trying to tune Adam’s mindless rambling out,” he shrugged. “So he’s going to stay with you tonight?”
I glanced forward at Adam and Randy leaning on each other as they walked ahead of us. Adam stopped at a bush to puke his brains out and I sighed. “Yep, someone has to take care of him and I have butterfly stitches for his cheek. I figure once he starts sobering up I’ll be able to actually talk to him.”
“Awe, you’re such a good friend,” Ted pinched my cheek sarcastically.
“Shut up,” I jabbed him with my elbow.
He chuckled, draping his arm around my shoulders as we all stopped in front of the turnstiles to get inside the freshmen complex. Randy shoved Adam in first, swiping his card and pushing his way through. Kiki and Cody followed and then me and Ted as Adam hummed a rock some under his breath.
“Are you sure you don’t want him to just stay with me?” Randy asked as we got to our building.
“No, I’ll be fine, I’ve done this plenty of times before,” I shrugged, relieving Randy of Adam and draggin him toward the stairs.
“Good luck!” Randy saluted and made his way down the hallway to the far staircase closest to his room.
Rolling my eyes I concentrated on heaving the thousand pound lump that was Adam up the stairs while Cody and Kiki giggled and flirted behind me. Yanking my keys from my pocket I shoved our room door open and helped Adam onto my futon in the common area. He let out a heavy sigh as I propped a pillow under his head and grabbed a bucket from the bathroom.
“Here, if you feel the need to puke, do it in there,” I motioned to the bucket he clutched loosely in his hand.
As I moved to get changed in the room Adam grabbed my hand. “Can you just sit with me for a bit, Logan?”
Staring down at him I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him, his green eyes pleading with me, a strand of hair in his face sticky with blood. “Yeah, I’ll be right back I just want to put my pajamas on and get the first aid kit, okay?”
He nodded and closed his eyes and I quickly changed into my nightclothes and grabbed my mother’s first aid kit. When I returned to Adam’s side he was already passed out, his mouth open as he quietly snored, the bucket resting on his stomach. As carefully as I could I pulled out the cotton ball, dabbing peroxide on it to clean the now slowly healing cut on his face. He flinched as the cold liquid touched his cheek but remained asleep as I wiped the dried blood away. After the cut was clean I closed the cut with a few butterfly stitches and left him to sleep, leaving my door open to check on him from time to time.
“Logan?” a rough hand yanked me from a fantastic dream a few hours later and I jerked awake, Adam leaning over me with a confused look on his face.
“Yeah? What’s up?” I sat up as he took a seat on the edge of my bed, his hand resting on the mattress beside my leg.
“Do you have any Advil, my head is killing me,” he groaned, smacking his lips. “And my mouth tastes like shit.”
Glancing at the clock I was surprised to see it was almost 8:30 in the morning. We’d both slept soundly through the night and Adam hadn’t puked all over the place. I nodded and shoved my covers off me, grabbing my glasses since I’d taken my contacts out before going to bed. I grabbed the bottle of Advil from my closet and handed the pills to him before grabbing a cup and filling it with water in the bathroom.
“Thanks,” he grumbled knocking back the pills and water like a shot and placing the cup on the side of the sink.
“No problem, so are you sober enough to walk back to your dorm?” I asked, sprawling out on my bed and he sat down next to me.
“Yeah, I just want this damn headache to go away,” Adam groaned, leaning back on my legs. “Thanks for letting my stay over, I’m sorry about last night. I just wanted to forget about everything and then she showed up….”
“I know it’s fine. I won’t it against you, I know you’re hurting,” I sighed, pushing hair out of my face.
“You know you’re really cute when you do that,” Adam grinned and winked.
“And you’re not getting anywhere near my pants, so don’t even try it,” I shoved his shoulder playfully.
“It doesn’t hurt to try,” Adam chuckled running a hand over the stubble on his chin. “You don’t happen to have a spare toothbrush or anything, do ya? My breath smells like baked ass.”
I couldn’t help but laugh as he hunted around my desk for my spare toothbrush. “It should be in the top drawer,” I directed, not really feeling like sitting up again. He found it and disappeared into the bathroom, the only sound being the water running and his humming as he brushed his teeth. When he reappeared he flashed a goofy smile and sat down on my legs again.
“So, what are your plans for this weekend?” he asked, lying down beside me, his face inches from mine. My stomach erupted with butterflies as he trapped a strand of my hair between his fingers and smoothed the waves from it.
“So far, homework and doing a whole lot of nothing,” I shrugged.
“So you wouldn’t mind if I hung out for a little while?”
“Not at all,” I skootched away from him, unsure what he was hinting at.
Out of nowhere he planted a kiss on my cheek and sat up, “Awesome, I left my stuff in Randy’s room, let me wake his lazy ass up and we can find some non-alcoholic activities to do today.”
Rolling my eyes as he made his way to the door, I heaved a sigh and sat up. Just as I decided to get out of bed and get dressed, Kiki bounded into the room grinning form ear to ear. She planted herself on my legs where Adam had sat and I groaned, falling back into my pillows as she bounced up and down.
“Guess what?” she asked excitedly.
“What?”
“Cody and I are going on a date today. We’re going to the city!”
“Wonderful, now will you get off my legs? I need them back, please.” I pushed her off me and stood up, grabbing my towel and clothes for the day.
“You’re not even going to tell me what happened in here? How was Adam?” Kiki asked as I moved into the bathroom to take a quick shower, not bothering to lock the door since it was just Kiki in the room.
“He was asleep before I could even clean up his cut. Nothing happened, Kiki,” I said, turning on the water and stepping into the shower.
“Well, I think you two make a cute couple, I mean, he’s gorgeous, you’re free from Dave now…. He’s clearly interested in you,” Kiki droned as I washed my hair and soaped up my washcloth.
“I dunno, I mean, he’s cute but maybe I should just focus on school now,” I sighed, scrubbing down and rinsing off. Kiki snorted but didn’t reply. Assuming she didn’t hear me or just chose not to reply I turned the water off and grabbed a towel, wrapping it around me before stepping out into the bathroom only to freeze at the sight of Adam leaning on the door, a cocky smirk on his face that sent my heart into palpitations. The man was almost as good at giving me heart attacks as Dave. “Um, what the fuck?”
Shrugging, Adam grabbed a bunch of my towel and pulled me toward him, his long blonde hair brushing over his shoulder as I reluctantly moved toward him. He leaned in close to my ear, his breath hot against my face. I couldn’t help but shiver as his hand splayed against my hip, he pressure making me tremble.
“Adam, what are you doing?” I gasped, trying to keep myself from flat out shaking.
“Purple really does suit you, Logan, accents your skin tone,” he swept his hand over my towel, tugging at the hem before winking and leaving the bathroom. I had to take a moment to catch my breath before drying off and dressing quickly in case Adam decided to pop in on me again.
When I stepped out of the bathroom Adam lay sprawled on my futon, his backpack on the floor beside him as he flicked through a novel I assumed he had to read for class. He turned to look at me as I tossed my towel into my room and grabbed the Ms. Pac Man TV hookup that I’d brought from home. Ignoring him, I hooked it up to the TV and turned it on as he sat up and plopped onto the floor next to me.
“You can’t break out Pac Man and expect me to sit here and just watch,” he nudged me with his elbow.
“Highest score wins, loser buys dinner tonight,” I challenged him, nudging him back before my game started and he attempted to mess me up.
“You two are ridiculous,” Kiki shook her head a half hour later as she went to find Cody for their date.
“Shush! I just beat level ten!” I waved my hand at her, smirking at the pissed look on Adam’s face as I blew his score completely out of the water.
Shaking her head, Kiki rolled her eyes and left, leaving Adam and I to argue about Pac Man until Randy popped his head in to ask us if we wanted to get something to eat…
