AN: Enjoy!!
Chapter Two:
Teddy looked around his new room still in a state of shock. It had been three days since he had moved in with the Starks and he was still in shock about where he was now living. He was trying to concentrate on his homework, but couldn’t. his mind was too wrapped around everything that was going on in his life – his new home, his new family. Sure there were rules – Mr. Stark seemed to be much stricter then his wife was. He said that homework was first and foremost in his household, while everything else came second. That included the Young Avengers.
“What was the impact of the American Revolution?” he read a loud. “What does it matter anyways!?”
“Because it led to other countries taking up the same ideals of revolution that we did,” Sara said standing in the doorway. “That’s why it matters.”
Teddy looked up at Sara. “Where you standing there the entire time?” he asked.
“No I just heard you ask the question out loud so I thought that I would help,” she said walking into the room. She pointed to her ear. “Super hearing. I can hear a pin drop in Tokyo, if I wanted to. .”
“Really?” he asked in amazement.
She nodded as she sat down in his desk chair, while he stayed seated on his bed. “so have any other questions you need help with?”
Teddy handed Sara his essay questions and she looked them over. “Ok has your class studied the French Revolution?” she asked. “Or what was going on between the British and French in regards the sea trade?”
“Yeah but it was boring,” he said shrugging his shoulders. “So I zoned out during class.”
“Well that is what you need focus on,” she said handing him back his paper. “It may seem boring but not all history is. I’ll be in the study if you need some more help.”
She stood up and was about to leave the room when Teddy stopped her. “Mrs. Stark….I mean Sara can I ask you a question. But it has nothing to do with history.”
“Sure,” she said sitting back down.
“Is Mr. Stark always this distant? I mean I’ve met him as Iron Man before, but never really as Tony Stark. And he just seems cold, while you’re the complete opposite.”
“You’ve got to understand this first Teddy. There isn’t a single member of the Avengers who has had an easy life. Tony is no exception.”
Teddy listened as Sara explained how Tony first became Iron Man and what that did to him as well as his recent heart transplant and change over to the Extremis program. She also explained that loosing his parents when he wasn’t even 20 took a toll on him as well.
“Even House of M shook him to the core. Seeing that world and being there was scary for all of us.”
“I’ve heard,” he somberly said, thinking about Wanda and how Billy and Tommy never got to meet their parents.
Sara took a deep breath before continuing. “I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but I will.”
She paused again before continuing and Teddy could sense that something was wrong with her as well. “Haven't you wondered why Sirius hasn’t been seen a lot lately?”
“Yeah…”
“Shortly after House of M, Tony and I found out that I was pregnant. But a few days ago, I lost the baby. We had been trying for so long to have a family and then I lost it. That both hit us hard, probably him more so then me. But still it hurts.”
Teddy could sense the hurt coming from Sara as he stood up and gave her a hug. She hugged him back in return.
“So now do you understand a bit better why he seems distant?”
“Yeah,” he said trying to avoid her gaze as he sat back down. “I am sorry about the baby though.”
It’s alright,” she softly said. “Hopefully it will happen one day. So are there any other burning questions you have?”
“How’d you get your powers? I know how most of the other Avengers did, but not you.”
“Like you I was born on a different planet. But shortly after my twin brother and myself were born, our home planet was destroyed. Our father sent us to Earth before the destruction, where the yellow sun would allow us to have superhuman abilities.”
“So where is your brother?”
“On his earth.”
“His Earth?”
Sara nodded. “Come on, its easier if Bennie and Jarvis show you then to have me explain it.”
Teddy followed Sara through the Starks penthouse to her study. In there sat, Bennie, who Teddy knew was an android of some kind. He was playing chess against the house computer known as Jarvis.
“So who do I get to beat next?” Bennie asked. “I’ve beaten Jarvis four times already.”
“Later Bennie,” Sara said. “But I need you to explain to Teddy about how you and I ended up on this Earth.”
“My pleasure,” Bennie said standing up. He walked towards the center of the room where a computer sat. “Jarvis, bring up the Apokolips file.”
“Coming right up,” the computer said.
Teddy watched as a planet of fire and brimstone appeared on the screen.
“This is Apokolips. Its tyrannical ruler, Darkseid, held Ms. Sara here against her will for almost a year before she and I escaped. We finally came across the Source Wall, which sits at the end of all known existence. There she was given a choice of how to get home – either travel back across the galaxy or go through a black hole. She chose the latter. We were warned that we could end up anywhere at anytime. The end result was that she ended up falling onto this Earth, where we have lived since.
Teddy sat mesmerized by the entire thing. He knew that other planets and alien races existed, but he never knew that other Earths existed. “have you ever been able to see your brother again?” he finally asked.
Sara nodded. “Bennie, Jarvis and I discovered that there are an infinite number of Earths across the space time continuum. The black hole that her entered connected this Earth to the one where my brother lives. It took a while, but yes, I can now go to my other home if I please.”
“Where you a hero before you came here?”
She nodded once again before turning to the computer. She quickly pulled up a picture file. “these are the heroes of Earth-2, as I call it. Much like our Avengers, they go by the name of the Justice League. They do much the same that we do here.”
“This is wicked cool.”
Sara couldn’t help but smile. “Just remember to keep this between you and I.”
Teddy agreed. Now he felt like he actually belonged in the Stark family. Besides Sara, like himself, knew what it was like to be alone in the world.
“He’s trying to be good and follow the rules.” Sara said. “So why do you and Steve have to be so hard on him and his friends?”
Tony sighed as he pulled his wife closer to him. “Feelings towards the metahumans are changing. Congress is possibly going to force all of us to register, much like they did to the mutants.”
Sara looked up at him in horror. “But why? All we’re trying to do is help.”
“I know,” he said. “I’m not sure what’s going to happen, but that’s why I’m so adamant about the Young Avengers disbanding. They don’t need to be pulled into something like that – not without knowing what’s at stake.”
“Tony, they know what’s at stake.” Sara said, closing here eyes as she lay against Tony’s chest. “We all do.”
He softly kissed her forehead as he watched her drift off to sleep. “I know,” he whispered. “You of all people know what sacrifice means.”
