Chapter 1: After the Rain

The morning was bright and beautiful. The stream was clear and the fish were at play. Flowers glistened in the sunrise from being kissed with the morning dew. Songbirds filled the air with their sweet ballads as the winds carried the tunes through a small village. This village rested alongside a beautiful stream that, despite its pleasant appearance, can become quite violent in a storm. As a matter of fact, a storm had occurred just the night before.

Deena emerged from her abode, just as cheerful as the day, with a pail in her hand and a song in her heart. Her slightly tanned skin glistened in the sunlight as she made her way to the stream. As she skipped along, she closed her honey colored eyes and let the slight breeze kiss her face. Her long burgundy hair flowed behind her as if it were a silk veil. When she stopped to pick a flower, her fair hair fell past her shoulders and landed just above her waist. Deena was marveled by all in her village for her stunning beauty.

Her body, said some, seemed it had been carefully carved by angels. She had nice, firm, and ample breasts that were complimented by a slightly slim, but healthy build. Her waist was quite small, but her hips filled out beautifully which also made for a nice, shapely behind. Though she doesn’t pay attention to those who gawk at her, she could not hide the fact that at eighteen, her appearance commanded the attention of everyone she encountered, man or woman.

Chichiri lay on the grass, still unconscious and weakened from the currents of stream during the storm the night before. His eye had been gouged out by a log trying to save his friend from being swept away by the current. His face was slightly grotesque, but still held some boyish charm. At nineteen, a year after discovering that his fiancée and his best friend loved one another, he was already prepared to give up on love.

Deena sat down at the stream and began to collect the water in her pail, singing non-chalantly to herself. As she stood, she caught sight of a young man nearby, sprawled out on the grass. Deena, thinking he was just resting, turned to go back into

her village. It was only when she heard a painful groan that she turned and went to see if anything was wrong. She saw that the young man was struggling to move even one finger. She set the pail in the grass and ran to him, hoping that he wasn’t on the brink of death.

When she got to him, he had abandoned his attempts to move and had lain back down. Deena sat on her knees as she held the young man’s head in her hands. His face had endured a terrible injury and he looked very pale and starved. She put her ear to his chest and listened to see if he was still alive. His breathing is labored, she thought, but he’s breathing nonetheless. She sat there for a while, observing his body. He looked to be about five feet and nine inches, with a slim build. He also had soft, dirty blonde, almost brown hair. Though he was not conscious, she thought that the young man was very handsome.

She waited a bit longer to see if he would come around, but it looked as if he was getting worse. I’ve gotta help him, I can’t just leave him here. He may die, she though as she stood up. “How am I going to get him home?” she asked herself aloud. Since there was no one else around to lend a hand, she’d have to try and carry him herself. She may not have been strong, but at least she was willing to try. Deena struggled to pick the young man up from the grass, but managed to get his arm around her shoulder and she held onto him. She put her arm around his slender waist to support him and held on to his hand that was hanging from the other side of her neck.

Before leaving the stream, she tried to retrieve her pail of water, but because of the weight of the stranger, she couldn’t hold on to it. Setting the pail down once again, she made her way back to her home to care for the strange man she just picked up. Deena was happy that her home was very close to the stream because the young man was getting heavier and heavier with each step. Once she got home, she immediately took him to her own room, laid him on her bed, and wrapped him with plenty of blankets. She then sat by his side, talking to him as if he were awake, waiting and hoping that he would come around soon.
